22.01.2022 You're not going to believe what I'm about to tell you! What is the backfire effect, how does it protect us, and what can we do about it when we want or need to learn something new? This comic can stimulate questions and discussion about the nature of belief, "knowledge," and learning among upper primary students or secondary students. Via The Oatmeal

20.01.2022 What an amazing Technologies challenge! I think I love the way the sides are sticky-taped and folded best of all Such a great opportunity to develop, practise and apply some literacy and numeracy capabilities too.

19.01.2022 Critical thinking does need to be taught, and can be taught, and yes there is scope in the curriculum - but the structures and cultures of schools (and systems!) must enable and empower teachers to do it. How do you teach for critical thinking in your classrooms?

18.01.2022 Have you attended a Big Ideas of Science workshop in the last few months? Please leave a recommendation for our workshops, letting others know what helped you most!

18.01.2022 Oooh! I love using stimuli for developing new understandings. When it comes to stimuli like this, there are three questions your class can discuss (in small groups then as a whole class, perhaps): 1. What is the problem, issue, challenge, or situation? 2. How can we solve it? (Bonus activity: what are the different ways we can solve it?) 3. What is a/the solution? ... There is a tendency to jump straight to the third, but it’s collaborative dialogue around the first two that builds students’ reasoning, understanding, and problem-solving, while also promoting positive dispositions toward learning and for decision-making!

18.01.2022 "The failure of science education is not that students have not learned facts or do not understand theories; it is that they have not been challenged to evaluate the validity of their own beliefs, assumptions, and values." - me! (Charlotte Pezaro). We need to make space and time for students to question their own understandings and perspectives, and learn to hold their ideas lightly... #bigideasofscience #scienceeducation #stemeducation #primaryscience #primaryteachers #dialogiceducation #science #whatisscience #natureofscience #ideasaboutscience #questions #criticalthinking #teachingforthinking #inquiry

17.01.2022 When teachers complain... via xkcd #fridayfunny

17.01.2022 No prediction has been made as often, or as incorrectly, as [the claim that] "this will revolutionise education." We see this claim made again now, in the time of COVID-19. And while there's lots about education that needs changing, there's one thing that never will... the fundamental role of a teacher in guiding, inspiring, and motivating students to learn. Be inspired again by this wonderful video by Veritasium!

09.01.2022 It may seem like the process of making and testing vaccines against COVID-19 has been rushed, but as Hank Green explains in this excellent episode of SciShow, these new mRNA vaccines have actually been about 50 years in the making. Scientific progress is incremental, and many of the breakthroughs that were needed to develop the mRNA vaccines came before COVID-19 was even a speck on the horizon. Hat tip to Ellie for sharing this video!

08.01.2022 We know that primary teachers are pedagogical experts. They understand children, teaching, learning, how the curriculum works, assessment, behaviour; the many and varied aspects of their role. We also know that there are many primary teachers who (just like many everyday people) lack confidence in their capacities to interpret, analyse, and evaluate scientific ideas, pose hypotheses, evaluate scientific claims and arguments, synthesise scientific evidence, justify scientif...ic procedures and methods, and communicate their understandings clearly and coherently. Big Ideas of Science aims to give those teachers the support they need to develop these capacities. Interested? Register today for one or more workshops in the 2021 Big Ideas of Science series at https://www.dialogic.com.au/register See more
