24.01.2022 Over the years we have seen a significant amount of waste in Complex Projects. In many cases this is driven by the 'Quest for Certainty' from Executives in organisations requiring a detailed plan in a highly uncertain environment aiming to reduce risk. Our view is that this does not reduce risk and can be wasteful. We believe the focus is to be on 'Delivering the Right Things' throughout a Complex Project. Agile approaches using experimentation aimed at learning & adapting a...re more effective to understand what the customers & the business really needs. After our meetup, Lean Business Strategies & Agile Brisbane, John Stathakis and I created a video to explain how organisations can reduce waste in complex projects using an #agile technique, MoSCoW and #leanbusinessstrategies such as Minimal Viable Product (MVP) We assert the controversial claim that MVP is not the "M" in MoSCoW! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe4FoUsFtB4 We hope you enjoy! Keen to hear your thoughts! Thank you Bec Norton for creating the images in the video. #corporateinnovation #leanstartup #agile #innovationmanagement #businesstransformation #businessagility #innovationmindset #agilemindset #mvp #lean #projectmanagement #agileprojectmanagement BIGJUMP - Bringing Innovation to Life
24.01.2022 Another great day of sharing & learning about Brisbane organisations and their Corporate Innovation journey with Dan Toma (International Corporate Innovation Expert) & Bigjump. A great breakfast discussion with Brisbane Airport Corporation about innovation management & setting useful innovation KPIs at different levels (Corporate, Governance and team level). Dan also highlighted the importance of including HR in the innovation strategy discussions. Thanks Clint Harvey Melinda... Jacob Floor Felten Gert-Jan de Graaff and the rest of the team. After lunch we visited The Public Trustee of Queensland. An organisation that is currently going through a transformation and their innovation journey is part of this. Topics discussed were: 1) importance of stakeholder mapping, understanding each part of the organisation's challenges and the priority of addressing these so impact can be maximised. 2) Practical ideas for creating an environment where staff can experiment and share their learnings and progress on a regular basis. 3) Reviewing past innovation successes and acknowledging these and learning from them. 22.01.2022 Some key takeaways from my visit to @AtlassianHQ (Australias most successful technology startup). Company values are part of everyday conversations: Open Company no bullshit, Build with heart and balance, Dont #@!% the Customer, Play, as a team, Be the change you seek. - Information & knowledge is no longer considered as strong provider of power in modern organisations, it is the application of this knowledge. Therefore Atlassian shares a lot of their learnings with the c...ommunity. - Atlassian has titanic rooms, rooms that are filled with great ideas that didnt survive first voyage, Important to learn from these. - Perfection kills innovation - Innovation is in everyone - Dysfunction is the gap between what we know and what you apply - Learning velocity (how quickly can we learn through application) is key to being adaptable - The more traditional a company the harder it is to unlearn - With autonomy comes responsibility. - Most organisations are focussed on efficiency not effectiveness - KPIs need to be on outcomes not outputs. #corporateinnovation #leanstartup #innovation #Agile #designthinking See more

22.01.2022 According a research from CB Insights, 42% of start-ups die because they work on products with no market need. That's insane! And Corporate Start-ups probably face the similar figures!! Based on Alexander Osterwalder's Value Proposition Design, Playing Lean 2.0 will really help create an organisational culture to prevent this! We are proud to be one of the sponsors for Playing Lean 2.0 and introduce this great new version to Australia. With new features added, such as ...Talent scouting, Experiment Upgrade and time constraint, Playing Lean 2.0 brings more problems and opportunities from the real start-up process, relevant to Corporates, Start-ups and Government on their innovation journey. Some new rules require the team to look at the big picture, from technical to marketing views, through each step of the process Building Product Features, Testing the Market, Selling and Increasing their Technical Capabilities. Some pictures from the BIGJUMP test driving Playing Lean 2.0! @bigjump #leanstartup #corporateinnovation @playinglean #innovation #startups See more

09.01.2022 The Importance of Aligning Innovation Strategy with Business Goals. Otherwise innovation activities are ad-hoc and disconnected. Very hard to see real impact of efforts. https://www-movestheneedle-com.cdn.ampproject.org//the-imp #innovation #businesstransformation #leanstartup #agile
09.01.2022 Great to see so many people at the first Official #LeanStartupNight in #Brisbane with Guest speaker Dan Toma (Innovation Expert and Author of the Corporate Startup). It really shows how the interest in Corporate Innovation has grown over the years. The event helped connect a very diverse group of people from small & large businesses as well as entrepreneurs & researchers. All of these parties have an important place in the innovation ecosystem and more and more corporates ar...e now connecting their innovation programs with startups and researchers. There is lots that can be learnt from each other. Dan demonstrated through an interactive game the importance of Innovation Governance and how innovation can be managed to provide ideas with the best chance of success without sinking too much cost. Getting the balance right is a challenge for any organisation. Dan suggests that companies start implementing governance as part of an organisation's innovation system, review and improve regularly. Some other takeaways - Innovation Boards should be changing the questions they ask of a corporate startup as it matures. Learning and gaining traction are key measures. Revenue is the last KPI. - Dan recommends to have multiple innovation boards in large organisations so that ideas have multiple places to go for support - Innovation boards are to have people from different levels within the organisation but also from the different functions. - Test the riskiest assumptions that are key to the success of your corporate startup first. - Best to disprove an Assumption, rather than try and prove it. 08.01.2022 Learnings from 3-day Corporate Innovation Conference (Innov8rs Sydney) - Top 5 key aspects to creating a culture that is supportive of innovation: Positive Interpersonal Exchange, Intellectual Stimulation, Challenge, Flexibility and risk taking, Top Management support. - Dan Toma explained some of the challenges with setting up the right level of governance and which aspects of your organisation to consider. - Measuring innovation continues to be a challenge. How do you put... organisational learning in a business case. Knowledge to assumption ratio?; Time to insight?; Churn rate?; Effort vs return. Measure outcomes instead of outputs. - ISO standards for Innovation management are being developed in Europe Some Qutotes: - Get onboard with the new and dont fight the old - Unlearning is the new learning - If you are not confused, you are not thinking clearly #innovation #corporateinnnovation #leanstartup #designthinking See more

05.01.2022 Most of the time folding on options feels as a loss. And sometime it is true especially through a short-term lens. But sometimes folding on short term options can free up resources for something more lucrative down the road. The problem is that more often than not, the fold decision is to take on the gut feeling alone. Or, it is based on some sketchy math at the very best. Independent of the complexity of a business, theres always a mathematical formula that can be used to show the potential profitability of an opportunity. #innovation #agile #startup #businessmodelling #bigjump

03.01.2022 Business model #innovation is perhaps one of the most important type of innovation - especially in legacy industries. With the passing of time Teslas initial competitive advantage in #technology (and #design) is eroding. And this is happening in the context of a serge in demand for electric vehicles. 01.01.2022 Lacking one coherent narrative for growth, covering both the present and the future will always make innovation be regarded as a distraction. Just like venture capital investors have investment theses that specify the types of startups and markets they invest in, every corporation must have an innovation thesis. An innovation thesis clearly sets out a companys view of the future and the strategic objectives of innovation. Find out how one should like from Dan's latest article https://buff.ly/2S7s4Sb #innovation #corporateinnovation #corporatestartup #innovationmanagement
