23.01.2022 MINIATURE EDIBLE ROSES Lets take a moment to stop and...EAT the roses?! Yep, we said it! Edible roses are a delicious, nutritious and beautiful addition to your edible landscape so lets kick off your Monday with some fun facts!! F A C T #1 In case you didnt know, roses have quite a famous family (rosacaea). They are closely related to almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, plums, and many other fruits youve probably eaten! F A C T #2 dont let those ...thorny branches fool you, nearly every part of a rose plant is edible - the leaves, buds, petals, hips (yes roses have hips and as Shakira ensures us- they dont lie ). F A C T #3 the darker the variety, the more pronounced the flavour! F A C T #4 miniature varieties can garnish ice cream and desserts, or larger petals can be sprinkled on desserts or salads. Freeze them in ice cubes and float them in punches. Petals can be used in syrups, jellies, perfumed butters and sweet spreads. But, be sure to remove the bitter white portion of the petals! Enjoy your Monday and I hope we ROSE to the occasion with these fun and culinary facts

19.01.2022 Gettin FIGGY with it Are you ready for some fig fun facts (try say that 5 times fast )? Here we go!! F A C T #1 Fig trees have no blossoms on their branches. The blossom is inside of the fruit! Many tiny flowers produce the crunchy little seeds that give figs their unique texture. F A C T #2 The fig is believed to be indigenous to western Asia and to have been distributed by man throughout the Mediterranean area. Remnants of figs have been found in excavations of site...s traced to at least 5,000 B.C. F A C T #3 Figs naturally help hold in moisture in baked goods, keeping them fresher. Because of this, pureed figs can be used as a fat substitution in recipes. Use half the amount of fig puree as you would use butter or oil. F A C T #4 Figs are harvested according to natures clock, fully ripened and partially dried on the tree. F A C T #5 Three large fresh figs (a little over two-ounces each) contain just 140 calories and 5.5 g of dietary fiber. Thats more fiber than in 1 cup of cooked oatmeal or a slice of a Double Fiber Wheat Bread! F A C T #6 Figs have a 55% natural sugar content, making them the sweetest of all fruits. F A C T #7 Known as the fruits of the gods, this sweet fruit was used by the Greeks as signs of prosperity and for early Olympic training. So whether youre looking for a fat substitute or training for the Olympics, get your hands on some fig-alicious figs!
18.01.2022 B U D D H A S H A N D Buddha's Hand citron produces deep lemon yellow fruits that vary in shape and size. The fruit splits at the opposite end of the tree's stem forming segments that have a wild finger-like appearance, hence its given name. Its flesh is void of juice, pulp and seeds, rendering it inedible. The culinary virtues lie within its oily rind which is powerfully fragrant and aromatic and utilized for its zesting properties. Buddha's Hand citron flavor is described as a unique blend of bitter and sweet, similar to kumquats and tangerines, with lavender notes and a bright lemon highlight. Its also believed to bestow good fortune so get your hands on Buddhas hand

16.01.2022 B L O O D O R A N G E S Blood oranges are truly one of natures wonders! So lets discuss some fun facts about these BLOODY good oranges F A C T #1 The key difference between a blood orange and a regular orange is the presence of a raft of phenolic compound but principally the presence of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are what makes blueberries blue and raspberries red. They are not present in other citrus, just blood oranges. F A C T #2 These anthocyanins are 3 tim...es as potent as Vitamin C or Vitamin E. In other words, 1 blood orange has the equivalent antioxidant quenching capacity of 2kg of navel oranges. F A C T #3 blood oranges have been shown to improve cardiovascular health, protect from UV damage and other sources of free radicals including pollution, certain recreational activities and physical exercise mainly through their action as potent antioxidants. F A C T #4 blood orange components reprogram the metabolism to that of a healthy individual with a healthy diet. Blood oranges have been shown to be beneficial in metabolic diseases including type to diabetes, fatty liver, insulin sensitivity and obesity where the compounds in blood oranges were demonstrated to affect the expression of DNA and the alteration of metabolic pathways that determine the fate of digestive carbohydrates and fats (ooo that got a little science-y). F A C T #5 In a human study which involved consuming 750 mLs of blood orange juice a day, the people on the blood orange juice did not gain any weight when combined with a normal diet! Thanks for tuning in for our fun facts and we hope you enjoy your week! #bigmichaelsfruitandvegetables #bigmichael #bloodoranges #brisbanewholesale #fruitandvegetables

15.01.2022 R A D I S H Radish is a type of herbaceous plant that belongs to the mustard family. It originates from Southeastern Asia, where cultivation started 2700 years BC. Ancient Egyptians were also fond of radishes. Cultivation of radishes started even before building of pyramids. Radish is equally popular today. It prefers cooler climate and grows quickly under appropriate conditions (enough sun, fertile soil and moisture)
15.01.2022 C A R A M B O L A / S T A R F R U I T Star fruit is all about what Oprah preaches: inner beauty. It looks weird and wonky when you pick it up at the storean oblong gourd-like thing, with pointy sides and a shiny surfacelike the last possible thing to taste sweet and delicious. But, when starfruit is cut at a cross section, its pieces resemble cute little stars. It's sweet, with a note of tartness, and has a firm, grape-like texture. The fruit, also called a carambola, is a tropical variety native to Sri Lanka, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, and other parts of Southeast Asia

The fruit can range in size from 1 to 20 pounds. F A C T #2 The exact origination of papaya is unknown but it is believed to be native to southern Mexico and neighboring Central America. F A C T #3 September is National Papaya Month (only a day away ). F A C T #4 The white powd...er sold as Meat Tenderizer is composed mainly of an enzyme extract from the papaya, called papain. F A C T #5 There are two types of papayas, the Hawaiian and Mexican. F A C T #6 Most people only eat the sweet delicious flesh, but you can also eat the small, black seeds in the center of the fruit. 06.01.2022 E G Y P T I A N G A R L I C Egyptian garlic is smaller in size than common white garlic and has a globular, tear-drop bulb that connects into a stem, also known as a neck, that may appear green when fresh and brown when dried. This flavour and aroma will lessen with cooking and will develop a mild, savory flavor. ... 03.01.2022 S L I P P E R Y J A C K S Running through Winter. Mid $40s. Slippery Jack Mushrooms are wild mushrooms that grow in symbiotic relationship with pine and spruce trees. The caps are saffron coloured or yellowish-brown, though they can be a dark chestnut brown. As the mushroom ages, the cap flattens. The cap can be anywhere from 2 to 5 inches wide (5 to 13 cm.) Under the cap, there are pores instead of gills.... Best used in dishes rather than used on their own as a side or as a featured ingredient. The slimy skin needs to be peeled off. Dont try just slicing them up and frying them, they will become a slimy goo. Cook whole, peeled. Happy Hump Day everyone and we wish you a slippery (see what we did there ) slope to the weekend!

01.01.2022 C H E R R I E S Wait up! Fun facts twice in one week? Thats right! Weve rounded up some facts about this perfectly sweet and purely delightful stone fruit so keep reading! F A C T #1 The most expensive box of cherries was sold for $35,000 Australian dollars by Sydney Markets in conjunction with Variety the Childrens Charity NSW! But luckily for you, our price isnt that exy! F A C T #2 a cherry tree can be harvested in 7 seconds. Thanks to the introduction of me...chanical tree shakers, the laborious process of hand-picking cherries now takes a mere seven seconds per tree. Efficiency has its price, though. Because the machine is so intense, it shortens a trees life by seven years. F A C T #3 This ruby red fruit delivers some health benefits, too. Cherries are jam-packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that are good for your health. To sweeten the deal, theyre low in calories, too! Pack some in your lunch bag for a guilt-free snack. F A C T #4 there are more than 1000 different varieties. From Lamberts to Lapins to Rainers and Royal Anns, there are more than 500 varieties of sweet cherries, and almost as many tart ones. But only a small percentagearound 20 or so altogetherare used in commercial production. F A C T #5 the word cherry, may have Greek origins. The word cherry has been attributed to the Greek town of Cerasus, which today is the city of Giresun, located in Turkey. Its the place where cherries were first exported to Europe. But some historians think that the town itself was named after cherries, and prefer an Akkadian origin for the name. (Insert the very Greek accent Big Michael has here*) You see, the Greeks we invented everything
