25.01.2022 My inimitable, enigmatic and most excellent friend, Sarah Andrews, of @captainsrest on my last visit to the Wild West Coast of Tasmania with Sarah, I shot this short motion vignette, which is in my current Story or IGTV. #leicaq2 #leica #captainsrest #leicaphotography

23.01.2022 One year ago - when Penny was camouflage, had a rooster painted on her door and my pensive look must have been anticipating what was to come. #perentie #landrover #landrover110 #defender #defender110 #overlanding #tasmania #tassie

22.01.2022 Raft up with my pals in the California Delta (my boat, SV Harmony to the left). Harmony was a Thomas Gillmer designed double-ender, full of teak, oil lamps and a little gas fired heater attached to the forward bulkhead: she was the floating definition of Hygge. I dreamt of sailing her on an epic surf mission from San Francisco to New Zealand via Mexico, Easter Island, Pitcairn, French Polynesia and beyond. I'd started a business as a financial means to fund such dreams, but things weren't at a stage where it was going to be possible to set sail in the end I was able to wrangle a short amount of time away and voyaged with my mate Chris across the entire Pacific in just 88 days, with only three stops: Marquesas, Suwarrow & American Samoa. #aries32 #sailing #cruising #yachting #yacht

21.01.2022 If you have ever thought one of my photographs might look good on your wall, Ive selected 24 of my lifestyle favourites and collaborated with a Melbourne-based fine art studio, to print, frame and freight my signed works. Swipe for a few selects and click the link in my bio to view the full collection! After I finished my BFA in Melbourne, I moved to Berlin because I wanted to get my Masters - to cut a long story short, I bought a sailing boat and crossed some oceans instead.... There was a point where I had to make a very difficult decision: in order to sail my boat solo, I needed a special piece of equipment to steer the boat so I could sleep - sailing ships carry on 24x7 regardless of whether youre tired or not - so I temporarily traded being a photographer and artist for being an adventurer - one in the same really, but thats another story - I shipped my Plaubel Makina 6x7 (Ive owned some beautiful cameras in my life, this was my second favourite - Ill tell you about my first another day) to the buyer in Holland and it went missing in the post. After a nail biting week, it turned back up on my doorstep in Berlin, and I was so terrified of losing it again, I took an overnight bus to Amsterdam and hand delivered it to the new owner. Success! Some years later, I sold my boat(s) and bought a Hasselblad (my third favourite camera) and here we are today. I dont know why I went down a camera rabbit hole, but there is another link in my bio with all the gear I use today, if youre into that - personally I think the world would be a better place if only wet plate cameras existed, but I digress. @ The World See more

21.01.2022 Aboard SV Blizzard, the 60ft Antarctic expedition yacht, with Curtis Island in Bass Strait to starboard. Blizzard sailed from Melbourne to Tasmania with paying guests, who loaded her up with the finest meats, champagne and cheese. Unfortunately for said guests, they were so seasick, they came close to mutiny en route, demanding to be dropped off on any island in the Furneux Group, never touching their coveted supplies. The captain persevered on to Devonport, where the guests swore off ever sailing again. Thankfully for us on the return leg, we had idyllic conditions and feasted like kings, as we drifted by this giant granite boulder and into Port Phillip bay with every inch of canvas up. #sailing #expeditionyacht #svblizzard #yachting #offshoresailing

20.01.2022 Signing the stack - There is an expression that sailors 'rot in port'. It would take me some months, or perhaps even years to grasp what this truly meant. Sailors rot in port because they become swept up in busyness instead of the wind. Sailors know in their hearts that the sea is one of the few limitless and expansive landscapes we have left, and they understand the power these landscapes possess. Great horizons have the curious ability to support unimaginable dreams and ma...sk distraction, allowing our gaze to meditatively focus on infinity: the impossible somehow becomes possible and dreams seem to become tangible. The space affords our dwindling ability for the laser-clear focus we are capable of but always distracted from. The fear, the distances and the constant dynamics of the environment remind us of how small we are in the universe and how little time we have; a sense which is so easily lost in the minutiae of daily life: in other words, in port. There is a profound sense of freedom, power and glory which surrounds the ocean, and for some of us this allure is enough to make us push off aboard small boats in order to not just dream it, but to feel it. Sometimes this magic is enough to make sailing off alone across two oceans seem not only completely possible, but absolutely necessary. Excerpt from my book, The Years Thunder By See more

19.01.2022 With my pal Alex from @sailing.sv.trim we sailed from Port Macquarie to Lord Howe Island with a pitstop at Elizabeth Reef, the worlds most southern coral reef, precisely located at the following coordinates should you wish to find it: AbsoluteMiddleofNowhere. On approach to Elizabeth, the horizon slowly becomes dotted with shipwrecks and perfect waves peel left and right, as the full force of the Coral Sea bumps into the pleateu. Measuring just 8x5km in size and 3ft above... sea level (at low tide), one could always be surfing with an offshore breeze, simply by setting sail and moving to the appropriate side. We anchored at low tide and by high tide it appeared as though we were anchored in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by rusting wrecks - the cay remained hidden underwater until the moon granted it permission to become visible again, some 6 hours and 12 minutes later. We swam with reef sharks, searched the wrecks for the Crown jewels of Ireland (not found), and set sail for Lord Howe the following day. One hundred nautical miles or so later, we arrived at the entrance of the North Passage into the anchorage - a squall blew over the top of us, and some kind of extremely friendly bird perched itself on the solar panel, clearly mocking us as we searched for our mooring buoy. For seven days, we freedived for crayfish, surfed, and walked the only road on the island in search of Masked Boobys and an errant WiFi signal (the locals refused the installation of a phone tower). It was great. #lordhoweisland #lordhowe #sailing #cruising #yacht #nicholson32 #yachting See more

19.01.2022 Rack check on the salt flats of the Simpson Desert. The days were hot, dry, flies were everywhere, I worried constantly about Penny failing catastrophically, leaving us stranded with a $10,000 recovery bill... I looked forward to the peace of each night, the stars infinite, the flies vanished to wherever flies go at night (tucked up in bed I suppose?), Penny rested, the fire crackled, the silence overcame camp and all was good in the world. Penny never did fail, she was in he...r element - just like a real Perentie lizard. Like my first sailing boat, I always loved getting the look - you know, that look from someone whos driving an $80,000 car or sailing a million dollar boat, and youre sitting there in something thats taken you just as far and probably cost as much as a Toyota Corolla with peeling bonnet paint. I cant tell if its pride or being smug (probably both ), but whatever it is, its a feeling I know well and I get a tingle just thinking about it. Im unclear as to whether this parable is illustrating my point though - I think Lin and Larry Pardey said it more succinctly as Go Simple, Go Small, Go now. 18.01.2022 In one way or another, Ive been publishing what we now call content to the web for over 20 years. Before the term blogging existed, I wrote a Perl script which maintained a linear list of text posts it was called a website back then. During my sailing years, I maintained a popular blog which culminated in over 100,000 words, later becoming the mnemonic driver for my book The Years Thunder By. I noticed a pattern in contemplation during these quiet times, realising ther...e is a direct correlation between my sharing and my creative output by that I mean the more drive I have to create, the more I wish to share and in turn, this sharing ends up causing a snowball effect of creative momentum as it all reverberates around the universe. During maximum periods of creativity I am happy when I am happy I wish to be open, and when I am open, good things happen I know this to be a universal truth. With that in mind, I have decided to start writing more regularly, as a means to not only generate further creative reverberations, but to practice the craft of writing in preparation for longer form works. This will be in the form of a newsletter named VOYAGE, which will cover subjects of personal interest, including but not limited to: the ocean, photography, craftsmanship, books, and thoughts on my experiments in living a curious and exploratory life. 17.01.2022 After finishing our traversal of the Simpson desert (from east to west) we fought heavy corrugations for hours. Its always a battle finding a good speed to tackle these outback roads - sometimes the corrugations look a foot deep (and honestly I wouldnt be surprised if some were!) and it feels like your car is going to fall to pieces. Im no mechanic, but I installed Koni Heavytrack shock absorbers on all four corners myself, and this was the ultimate test of my workmanship.... We eventually popped out the other end unscathed, looking forward to camping next to Witjira-Dalhousie hot Springs, 180 kilometres northeast of Oodnadatta. Upon arrival and not too long before sunset, we swam in the hot springs after days tackling the desert. Soon after our swim, the mosquitos started to come out en force - it turns out the warm water was a mosquito oasis... We left at dusk and hit the corrugations once again, soon driving off-piste onto a plain, skipping dinner and falling into our swags. Just as I was closing my eyes, I jumped as the sky flashed, becoming daylight for a brief second. In amazement I lay there looking up, the sky behaving as if nothing had happened. I was later to read about the Min Min lights... #landrover #defender #perentie #landrover110 #defender110 #simpsondesert #outback #outbackaustralia #koni See more

09.01.2022 The sailing vessel Harmony and I, headed up Raccoon Strait after a lazy night at Angel Island, on return to Sausalito. My love for full keel, heavy displacement double-ender sailing boats... Knows no end. Actually, my love for Sausalito also knows no end. And Angel Island... And, well, the whole Bay Area come to think of it. There is this expression in Germany that goes something along the lines of Mein Koffer in Berlin - it means to always keep a suitcase in Berlin - I thi...nk Marlene Dietrich coined it in a lyric. I took this expression to an extreme and kept my beautiful boat Harmony as my suitcase in San Francisco for a several years - I feel like Dietrich would have approved she was sultry and luxe and chic and what could be more quintessential than a suitcase in the shape of a sailing boat in San Francisco. I also kept a suitcase in Berlin for a while in the form of an old Hinterhaus under rent control (a great rarity)... I sublet it to that band The Beautiful Girls for a while and all hell broke loose and I eventually lost it, but thats another story. #sailing #yachting #cruising See more

08.01.2022 Lazy days - there is little more fulfilling than earning your passage by virtue of the wind, or experiencing fullness in your belly by the catch of your hand. We live in such a complex environment of almost endless abstraction, the layers are nearly too thick to unravel. We work at a desk to be paid by wire so we can spend it on flammable liquids consisting of billion year old marine animals, to put in our car made in Yokohama to drive on French rubber upon a road carved by c...onvicts - all so we can stand on a precipice overlooking the ocean and gasp in wonderment - for just a moment - before we turn around, go back home and TikTok from the toilet. Instead of paying for avgas to propel a jet, we worked day and night to make passage the old way - energy whipped up by an uneven heating of the earth: a hot spot displacing a cold spot and there you have it, wind in our sails. We often have this idea of an angry sea - how tempestuous - although the sea itself would be as calm as a Swiss lake were it not for the wind or any other force upon it: water by nature, forms no ridable wave by divine means - much to the disappointment of every surfer that ever lived: imagine surfing Grans muddy dam after school, before a lamb chop dinner every night. 08.01.2022 Thats a wrap - the moment when the dream really sinks in - wearing high vis in the logistics factory as I drop Penny off to be packed and shipped to Africa this week.
