22.01.2022 Id never worked my entire life. I got married at 19 and had kids a year later; the last 50 years went into looking after my family. But I love knitting I do ...it every single day and knit clothes for our family and friends. So, 3 years ago when my granddaughter said that she wanted to learn knitting, I was so excited nobody had ever wanted to learn anything from me! So I started teaching her. One of those days, suddenly, Kiku said, Nani, you should be paid for the work you do, and I started laughing. She suggested setting up a business together. I said, Mere sweaters ke liye paise kaun dega beta, and my husband even said Nobody will buy these products. My entire family laughed it off; no one took it seriously. But Kiku was adamant and refused to listen. She said, Nani, main apko pura support dungi. She started posting pictures of my sweaters and scarves on social media and guess what? Within 24 hours, we received an order! My black scarf was sold for Rs.600 that was the first money I ever earned! I couldnt control my tears. I ran around the house showing off my money to everybody Ye mere khud ke paise hain! Within a month, we sold over 50 products! Kiku never missed an opportunity to motivate me Best Nani, Blockbuster duo and what not shed say! Eventually, my husband and other family members also started helping me my daughter spread the word and Kiku managed my social media. 3 months later, Kiku had to detach from the business because she had a full-time job. But by then, I was confident that I could do it on my own. Its been 2.5 years now I start knitting at 5 AM and my work goes on the whole day. At 72, I earned my first salary and at 75...I have my own full-time business. Im still getting a hang of social media, but from being camera shy, I now love posing! And while working, I play my favourite Punjabi songs and dance...my party has just begun! See more

19.01.2022 Effie Fellows had an extraordinary and adventurous career.. as a boy. Born in 1893, she grew up in Subiaco the daughter of a well known local painter and decora...tor. Always the tomboy, Effie went by the nicknames of Tommy and Rumsty. By aged 16 Effie decided not only that skirts were a nuisance but that she had to have "either freedom of speech or action". Having little regard to convention, she masterfully adopted mens attire and disguised herself as a boy. Effie gained a job as a lift-boy at the Palace Hotel in St Georges Terrace and after two days work was promoted to the dining-room, doing well out of tips. One day however she was recognised by a friend and knew it was time to "clear out". She then went on to work at a girls college as a page boy, trimming the lawn, filling the ink bottles and doing odd jobs but was sacked when she became an object of the girls affection. Effie went on to have many adventures. Going by the name of Freddie Manners she took a steamboat passage to Melbourne, sharing a male cabin with two men who later were reportedly astounded by the hoax. She got a job in Melbourne driving a horse and cart for a Toorak newsagent and it was here that she first saw male impersonators on the stage. Later she travelled to Sydney where she got a lucky break and was contracted as an impersonator at Fullers Theatres. Billed as Freddie Manners "Australias Perfect Boy", Effies successful career as a variety performer was launched in 1915. The novelty of her speciality and the cleverness of her characterisation, made her a hit in Australia and overseas. She toured the world, performed at the London Palladium and was described by a New York newspaper of the time, as "one of the greatest boy impersonators in her line". Effie regularly returned home to Perth during the 1920s and her visits invariably saw her headline at such theatres as the Majestic, Regent and the Luxor. Effie married twice, once to a London Acrobatic Clown whose stage name was Piquo and then to boxing promoter Sammy Chapman. In the 1930s the effect of the depression and the "talkies" brought about the gradual decline of vaudeville entertainment and Effie settled back into life in Subiaco. Here she continued to perform in nursing homes and community centres, always in male costume until her death in 1977. 18.01.2022 Right NOW in Poland, millions of women across the country are striking after the newly elected right-wing government banned abortion. The massive women's protes...ts are the largest in modern Poland history, women are refusing to go to work, drive, cook at home, or do anything until the abortion ban is dropped. Already after a week of protest, Poland's President today indicated they may have to change or reverse the law. This is the power of women. This the power of protest. And as God as my witness, if the right-wing lawmakers in the United States try to ban abortion, we will declare a revolution and shut down the country. Fuck around and find out. See more
16.01.2022 Today we farewelled Susan Ryan. If you're younger, you may not have heard about how much Susan changed Australia for the better. Before Susan, Australian women ...were in so many ways second-class citizens. She was responsible for so many of Labor's greatest modernising reforms, including the Sex Discrimination Act. Until then, it was legal to discriminate on the basis of gender, marital status or pregnancy. Women were locked out of education and jobs, refused access to home finance, and faced the sack for being pregnant. Her light shone with a special brightness for young women, staying true to her first election slogan: A woman's place is in the Senate as well as in the House of Representatives and at every table where decisions are being made. Despite fierce opposition, Susan kept her faith in democratic politics. She kept her faith in the power of government to change people's lives for the better. And she wasted no time in doing that when she was made cabinet minister no dithering, no announcements, just action. Susan's legacy lives on not only in the halls of Parliament, but in every workplace in Australia. Vale Susan Ryan.

12.01.2022 TW: graphic content "We found a baby girl 6 months ago in a plastic bag that was in a dogs mouth. A passerby saw movement in the bag and called us we rushed h...er to the hospital. She couldnt breathe and had been fed poison, which took 7 months to treat. Everyday, Id visit her. It broke my heart to see her in the incubator, being fed through a pipe. Finally a few days back, she was discharged and ever since, she sleeps next to me at night. I started Unique Home in 1993 to provide orphaned and abandoned girls a better life. That year, we found a baby girl in a dustbin. Ants were eating her skin and she was unconscious, so we took her to the hospital. She was there for a month, but recovered quickly. When I got her home, she was just a toddler, and for 25 years, I raised her right from preschool to college. Today, shes doing her PHD abroad! But that was the day I decided to never let these abandoned girls feel like orphans again. So over the past 27 years, Ive rescued hundreds of girls, but more than that, Im a mother to so many! We share a typical mom-daughter relationship Ill scold them if their room is messy or if theyre eating junk. And theyll quickly make it up by making chai for me or an apology card! Yet, there are days when Ill come across a case that shakes me to my core. Recently, we brought home 5 sisters whose mother was beaten to death by their father after their youngest sister was born. When I read about it in the paper, I couldnt sleep all night. So I spoke with the authorities and got them home. In the beginning, they wouldnt eat, talk or sleep and the eldest one kept saying, Take me home. To calm her down, Id tell her, Your mom told me, we are your family and Im your mom now. Slowly, we integrated them into counselling sessions, painting classes and studies, and they started opening up to the other girls. 6 months later, theyre eating well and now the eldest one says, I never want to leave! Truth is, Ill never stop my kids from doing what they love. Like one of my 13 year olds is a great runner. So we want to hire a trainer for her. If sports is her thing, I want to see her bring laurels home! I want them to understand that they can overcome any hurdle and that this world is a much better place than the one they came from. In this day and age, everyone keeps talking about gender equality and shattering the glass ceiling. But tell me one thing, how will girls ever reach there if they are never given the chance? If theyre left to die simply because theyre... girls?" See more

10.01.2022 Maggie Lena Walker, the daughter of a former slave and cook, was the first woman to charter a bank in the United States in 1902. The bank offered loans and mort...gages to black residents of Richmond, Virginia who were otherwise denied service by white-owned banks. A year later she started a department store allowing black customers to shop with dignity: To enter through the main doors instead of a side entrance, to try on clothing before buying, and to eat at lunch counters. Her store displayed clothing on brown-skinned mannequins and hired exclusively black women to work as clerks. Later the same year, Walker utilized her newspaper to urge Richmond residents to boycott the citys segregated streetcar system. The boycott was so effective the company operating the street cars declared bankruptcy two months later.
09.01.2022 4 years back, when Id just turned 90, I remember thinking, Saari umar beet gayi, aur maine ek paisa nahi kamaya. I had spent my whole life managing the hous...e and my family. While my kids were at school and husband was at work, Id spend hours trying new recipes I loved cooking. But when I was 84, my children had long moved out and my husband passed away. Thats when I started feeling lonely. I started living with my daughter after, and told her, Mujhe kuch karna hai, apne liye. I told her I can cook. She smiled and said Ma, you can sell your barfis and achaar in the mandi nearby. My kids loved them, so I thought it was a great idea! The Mandi owner immediately agreed, and in less than a week, my stall was set up and in a few hours, everything was sold out! That day, I earned my first salaryRs. 2000 for 8 boxes of barfi. I had tears in my eyes... it was the first money Id ever earnedat the age of 90! But I was happiest when a young girl told me, Nani, aapne mummy ki yaad diladi. I rushed home and started trying new recipes! I hadnt felt that excited about anything in years! Soon, the town knew my barfis as the barfis that reminded them of their childhood. So my granddaughter designed boxes for them, with Harbhajan, made with love, bachpan yaad aa jaye printed on them. After that year, everything happened so fast even newspapers started writing about me! And then 5 months back, my daughter came running to me and showed me an article where Mr. Anand Mahindra said that I am his Entrepreneur of the Year but I didnt know what that meant. She explained, it means youve started your own business! I told her then Ive been an entrepreneur my whole life, feeding you all! Life is busy nowIm baking all day. When I get bulk orders, I work from 8 am to 6 pm; I dont feel bored or lonely anymore! Ive even started dressing up more and bought matching potlis for all my sarees! When my kids and grandkids feel confused about their careers, I tell them, its never too late to change your mind...if nani can do it at 90, you can do anything! See more
