20.01.2022 Look back! Go back! Way back! More back! Go @megancheckley ! Benefits of Backbends: Practicing backbends on a daily basis can make your spine more flexible. As our spine is in continuous forward and backward motion throughout the day therefore it is extremely essential to restore it back to its original shape. Making your spine more flexible will prevent any sort of serious damage or injury.... People who suffer through chronic back or neck pain can get relief from the backbend pose as this posture brings back the natural strength, flexibility, mobility and vibrance to your body. It helps improve breathing as the posture opens up your chest and it can also factors associated with stress and anxiety. It helps stimulate the nervous system as it improves the circulation of blood within the body. The circulation of blood also helps maintain a positive and healthy cardiac health and well-being. #backbend #backbending #backbends #bikramyogaglenelg

09.01.2022 Why the heat? Bikram Yoga classes are held in a studio that is heated to 40C. The heat in the yoga room helps to warm the body’s muscles and joints, encouraging blood flow, and helps to protect the body during stretching exercises and postures. Benefits of heat:... Muscles, fascia & connective tissue become more elastic allowing for greater flexibilty & decreases the risk of injury Warm muscles burn fat more effectively. When we stretch, the fat has no room to sit so it redistributes to the blood stream which we then use as energy Warmer temperatures produce a fluid like stretch that allows for greater range of motion in the joints Heart rate becomes elevated which improves the cardiovascular system (heart and lungs) Capillaries respond to heat by dilating. This allows more oxygen to muscles, tissues, glands and organs helping in the removal of waste products Higher temperatures improve the function of the nervous system, meaning that messages are carried more rapidly to and from the brain or spinal cord (you think more clearly) Improves strength because proteins can be utilised more effectively Speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids Provides strengthening of willpower, self control and determination through the challenging environment Sweat with us! 04.01.2022 You may have heard of the term, ‘Fascia’ during your Yin practice. So what is Fascia? Fascia is what defines our body’s shape and ability to move. A well-functioning and developed network of connective tissue means a healthy, functional, moveable and pain-free body! Imagine an orange and the segment walls of the skin that wraps around each wedge that is all made up of the same tissue, which gives the orange its shape and structure and holds it together. The tissue itself also... holds a big of juice which makes it flexible, bendy and strong and therefore able to adjust and react to movement and pressure without breaking. Our body is structured similarly. We have an inner skin wrapping layers of connective tissue through and around us, holding liquid and cells in place and giving our body an organised structure. During Yin Yoga, we target these deeper layers of connective tissue that involve our bones, joints, ligaments and fascia to create space in the body, and as a result, it allows a greater movement of ‘chi through the body, promoting the healing response we aim for! See when we offer our Yin classes via our timetable, on our website: https://www.adelaideyoga.com.au/timetable #bikramyogaglenelg #YinYoga

02.01.2022 Why you should practice Yin Yoga! Originating from Chinese medicine, Yin Yoga provides balance to a Yang lifestyle. To some, it may be perceived as "boring" or too easy, but give it a try, and be prepared to change your mind! It is not a restorative practice. During Yin, we practise predominantly floor-based postures to temporarily "stress" the deep connective Yin tissues (Fascia) in the body. Deep connective tissues in the body do not respond the same as muscles, they are... able to resist brief stresses but slowly change when moderate stress is maintained for a longer period of time (3-5 mins). Holding this stress with connective tissue, to an appropriate edge, with muscles relaxed, for an extended period of time, creates a change in its fluids and results in a lengthening of the tissue and a feeling of space. This promotes a greater movement of energy through the area, maintaining the health of the meridian systems in the body. Holding these poses for long periods can be quite challenging. Just imagine attempting to maintain a still mind! However, the benefits can be huge and include: increased mobility, better lubrication and protection of major joints, a calmer mental & emotional state, and greater stamina for your Yang practice. 01.01.2022 We think, we speak words, and we take action. But when our words and actions are not in alignment, we are essentially teaching ourselves and others that we can’t be trusted. In other words, our thoughts, words and actions lack integrity. This can erode our sense of trust in ourselves, which in turn, can chip away at our self-esteem.... Feeling good about yourself is the foundation for positive thinking, and living a happy life. The power of positive thinking and doing is attainable with a shift in our perception! If you’re finding that your words and actions are out of alignment, simply write down all of the verbal commitments you’ve made, both with yourself and others, and then decide what you want to do with them, one by one. #bikramyogaglenelg
