24.01.2022 Such a clever wifey

23.01.2022 http:// INTERESTING FACTS // Anglesea Vivianite washes up on a small beach right here in Victoria, Australia. This nodular form of Vivianite is rare. In fact, it’s found in just one other location in Japan. The stone itself is believed to form in fossilised crab burrows when all the elements are just right. It’s easier to find after a storm and is collected only at low tide. The exact location of sourcing tends to be a closely guarded secret that few will tell (that’s right our... lips are sealed!). Vivianite is a lighter white tone to begin with. It’s the exposure to natural light that transforms it into the beautiful tones of blue and green tones you see in our jewellery. You can find out more about Vivianite here: http://billingmetals.com.au//our-unique-anglesea-vivianit/ Or check out our Anglesea Vivianite Jewellery Collection: http://billingmetals.com.au/j/anglesea-vivianite-jewellery/ #jewellery #handmade #australianmade #aussiemade #bushbusiness #billingmetals

23.01.2022 Gold price update= It has taken no notice of the US$2000 mark and rocketed past that over the last few days to US$2063 and rising! AUD $91.68 a gram Even little bits like this Ballarat district gold are well worth finding at that price.

23.01.2022 Geology in action. The Anglesea Cliffs with a fresh collapse in the past week, it is not as impressive in the photo but this cliff is 50 meters high! Dark volcanic rock topped by poorly consolidated sandstone. An amazing place although not a very safe beach. This stuff is cut from the local Vivianite found near here ;-) http://billingmetals.com.au/j/anglesea-vivianite-jewellery/

23.01.2022 Our little creek flowing nicely after 46.5mm of rain in two days! The heap of clay in the background there is from a hole that is showing promise, just need to timber and de-water it now!

22.01.2022 Who wouldn't want a lovely ball of zinc? Buy one, buy several... Get yours here: http://billingmetals.com.au/zinc-99-995-pure-metal-ball/

22.01.2022 Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum are a great resource for education and a great place to visit, unfortunately this horrible virus situation has hit it hard. Hopefully we will see it not only open again as soon as it's safe but thriving and full of happy visitors!

21.01.2022 Happy fathers day to all the dads out there! Hope you all had a great day and got spoilt rotten. I've eaten way too much chocolate

21.01.2022 We are expanding our product range at Billing Metals and adding a lot of elements, metals and chemicals for all sorts of handy uses. This Gallium sample is a new product, amazing stuff, it melts at such a low temperature it can melt in your hand! (gloves strongly recommended) You can make ultra low melting point alloys out of this stuff and it can make for great science demonstrations.... This is the metal used for bending/melting spoon magic tricks too. You can get some here https://billingmetals.com.au/gallium-metal-99-99-pure-10-g/

20.01.2022 Something for your Saturday morning, one of the most entertaining and interesting of all Aussie animals I think! This was in Berringa Victoria yesterday afternoon before the 27mm of rain came though last night! How good is an echidna walking This one is huge too, I assume a female. She knew there was something there but could not hear or smell me due to the wind. They are prolific around here but hard to get this close without them digging in and hiding.

17.01.2022 For those who are waiting for tin granules after they ran out last week (after a mad rush on tin!). They are back in stock! All the tin you ever dreamed of in the link below... http://billingmetals.com.au/search.php

15.01.2022 The characteristics of zinc... Zinc is a blueish-white metal which has a hexagonal, crystal structure and often appears silvery when freshly cut or cast. When exposed to air or the atmosphere, it develops an impenetrable coating of oxide film, giving it a greyer duller finish. This film inhibits corrosion giving zinc considerable commercial value as an anti-corrosive coating and sacrificial protectant.... Unalloyed zinc is relatively unusable but is used extensively when alloyed with other metals, particularly when alloyed with copper to produce brass. The relatively low melting point of zinc, at just 419.5 degrees Celsius, enables die-casting to a fine detail and provides easier workability for hobbyists. Our zinc... At Billing Metals we sell 100% Australian zinc primarily sourced from Broken Hill, one of Australia’s oldest mining regions in outback NSW. Our ultra-high purity zinc provides a minimum purity of 99.995% making it ideal for sacrificial anodes for cathodic protection of your boat, alloy creation and metal casting, or simply as samples for element collectors or chemistry projects. Check out our zinc products here: http://billingmetals.com.au/search.php #zinc #metals #zincsample #zinccharacteristics #plating #alloys #billingmetals

14.01.2022 The next generation of prospectors and miners! Sophie has a wild sort of detecting style but she found a nail and a bullet just before the video and they are treasure so I'm told. The red on her hand is ink by the way. She will do about 15 minutes before it gets too heavy but wants it back as soon as anyone else starts finding anything! Oliver was grumpy as he reckoned it was his turn.

13.01.2022 Tin Electroplating Anode fresh off the press! Well, the furnace really... These are made from high quality 99.85 plus tin, designed to be easy to use for hobbyist plating and small production runs. You get a LOT of plating done with one of these, they are around 100 grams of pure tin.... Just added to the site so grab them while they are warm! Someone did not align the 'B' with the rest of that stamp so it seems appropriate that the same someone took a crooked photo of the end product You can have a look at our metal plating products here: http://billingmetals.com.au/metal-plating/ There will be plenty more new products coming to help the home and small commercial plater. If you have any requests for products you need in this category please let me know.

12.01.2022 Worth a look, I really don't like the look of the heat treated citrine anyhow but it should ALWAYS be disclosed by a seller. We always fully disclose any and all gemstones we sell that have had any sort of treatments and don't sell anything we are unsure about.

12.01.2022 Aluminium, kind of handy stuff most of us take for granted. It is essential for modern life, there is supposed to be around 80kg of Al in use for every person on the planet! It is the second largest tonnage of production behind Iron with well over 60 million tons produced around the world every year! Did you know most of the Aluminium around us is not that pure? Most alloys vary from around 80 to 95% Al with Zinc, Silicon, Copper, Magnesium and many other elements used depe...nding on the alloy required. We have just added a new high purity Aluminium to the products here, 99.5% coarse granules, handy for chemistry projects and collectors. You can find them here along with high purity Al disks. http://billingmetals.com.au/search.php A couple of new minerals went up last night too http://billingmetals.com.au/mineral-specimens/new-finds/

11.01.2022 Keeping up with all the latest fashion in the Berringa Laboratory... Who would have thought it would ever be possible to leave the lab and head into civilization in this getup and not one person would look twice!

11.01.2022 The remarkable fossil beds at Jan Juc Victoria Australia. 25 million year old coral and seashells in perfect condition (well, other than the fact they have turned into Calcite/Aragonite pseudomorphs) in this photo. This is near where scientifically important whale and shark tooth fossils have been found, there is even a prehistoric whale named after the locality! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janjucetus

10.01.2022 Looking for a Christmas present for the person who has everything? They probably don't have Indium (and if they do they will want more!). This stuff is great fun to play with and is considered non toxic (we recommend gloves anyway). You can shave bits off with a knife or even your nails and weld them back on by simply crushing them back together! It will melt in a candle flame too. Indium is a very rare metal, mined as a by product in zinc and other metals but essential for... modern living due to it's use in electronics. Named after it's distinct indigo coloured spectral line that lead to it's discovery in 1864. It's a very unusual metal, very soft, very low melting point and makes some simply amazing alloys and compounds. It is also used as a lubricant between metal parts that will never dry out nor break down and will take as much pressure or as much vacuum as you can put on it. We have ultra high purity Indium in 1 gram samples, 10 gram ingots and in kits to make your own liquid metal alloy. All with free shipping within Australia Buy them here https://billingmetals.com.au/search.php Some of the Indium samples sold by some sellers online are in fact, not Indium, we guarantee 100% of our Indium sold is pure Indium ,well, .99995 out of 10000 parts pure anyhow, hard to get much purer ;-)

10.01.2022 This is the view from the top of that cliff collapse, 50 meters higher and several Km walk to get to! Those little trees have a grim future I feel...

10.01.2022 NEW BLOG: The many interesting uses of Zinc... Zinc is one of the most commonly mined and used metals in the world alongside iron, aluminium and copper. Much like we use zinc cream on our skin to protect us from the sun, zinc is widely used commercially as a protective coating to prevent rust and corrosion. ... This versatile metal is also commonly alloyed (mixed) with other metals to create brass, nickel silver and aluminium solder. The characteristics of zinc: Zinc is a blueish-white metal which has a hexagonal, crystal structure and often appears silvery when freshly cut or cast... 09.01.2022 One of these would be nice.... The anniversary of a very historic find!

08.01.2022 Working in one of our sheds yesterday afternoon while doing the kids at home thing, 5 year old asked why I'd put thick timber on a bench and I told her it is the new Lathe bench. 5 Minutes later I found this, clearly a lathe bench is for laying on! Just need to get kids off and lathe on now.

08.01.2022 Many of the metals we sell MUST be handled with the correct care and safety precautions. Which is why we have MSDS documents on our website. If you're considering purchasing an element sample or metal product, please consult these pages first.... You can find this information here: https://billingmetals.com.au/msds/ If you ever have any questions around particular metals and their safety, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] or call Toby 0406 498 528. #msds #safety #metals #billingmetals

07.01.2022 After my enthusiastic post about gold price last week it has kind of crashed a bit. All the way down to US$1929 or Aussie $2690 a troy ounce, still impressive but a fair bit less than last week. I will still be not at all surprised if it does hit the AU$3000 in the next 6 months. Gold may have dropped but I have listed up some new and very reasonably priced gold in quartz and gold in ironstone specimens along with some Ballarat Opal, yes Ballarat in Victoria has more than go...ld ;-) May have to do a post on that actually... Have a look here http://billingmetals.com.au/mineral-specimens/new-finds/ I will be adding more today too.

04.01.2022 SATURDAY NIGHT RELEASE - 1 ONLY! 03.01.2022 Apparently it is world dog day! I did not know it was a thing but here is a good one anyhow ;-)

03.01.2022 Working (ok, maybe more like playing) in the lab this morning with a fascinating metal = Gallium. This stuff is amazing, melts in your hand, alloys with just about everything (whether you want it to or not!) sticks tenaciously to glass and is generally a very cool thing to work with. It is also widely used in electronics and there will be some in a compound near you right now ;-)... There just happens to be a new product coming soon, anyone want to try to guess what is may be?

02.01.2022 Hello hello! What do we have here? The latest addition to our workshop is this Aussie made Jepson bench lathe, an older machine but it's got years of work in it yet! This will be used for turning up tooling for making all sorts of products, it's first job is die collars for some upcoming new products....

01.01.2022 A gaggle of baby tin ingots still warm from the furnace! This is a couple of our high purity .9999 Tin products halfway though the production process, these where cast about 10 minutes before this photo was taken this afternoon. The little ingots are our very popular 10 gram high purity tin, these just need culling for underweight and defects then stamping to make these... https://billingmetals.com.au/tin-metal-99-99-10g-ingot-ele/ The rounds are for our macro-etched HP tin disks, these will be acid etched over 12 hours then neutralised and they become these https://billingmetals.com.au/macro-etched-tin-metal-disk-c/
