07.01.2022 Storytime with Billy the rescue dog! Billy was adopted from Wide Bay Animal Rescue by retired Noosa couple, Ann and John, in late 2015. The minute they saw his gentle face on PetRescue, they knew they could give him his forever home. Ann says he’s turned out to be the best dog ever, and has now become a Story Dog - helping school children to improve their reading skills. We’ve rescued three dogs from PetRescue over the past two decades, said Ann. And when our last one p...assed away, our house only lasted one month without a dog! Knowing there are so many dogs looking for a safe and loving home, we went straight to PetRescue. The minute we saw Billy, we knew he was the one for us. We don’t know too much about his past, but he came to our house very well trained, he loves children, and has a really perfect nature. We thank his foster carer for giving him this fresh start, we can tell he was loved and trained. Billy is also very intelligent, and learns quickly. So when I saw an advert in our local paper recruiting Story Dogs for a local school, we thought it would be great to go and see what it was all about - as we love children and so does Billy! To become a Story Dog, dogs have to be obedient, no pulling on the lead or taking food etc. We knew Billy would be perfect and sure enough, he passed his assessment with the Story Dog trainer. I felt very proud and happy, and so was he! Billy received a little further training before being invited for his first reading session and, yet again, he was so good. Billy now has four children who read to him each week, three in Grade Two and one in Grade Five, and they all love Billy and thoroughly enjoy their time with him. Billy has given us both so much pleasure and it gives us so much pride knowing that we are doing something really good for children. He’s a very special dog.
