23.01.2022 World Wetlands Day is held every year on the 2nd of February to commemorate the signing of the Ramsar declaration. This year, the WA Wetlands Conference was held near Lake Monger, while the Cockburn Wetlands Centre is being renovated. Sadly, Lake Monger has succumbed to a hazardous blue green algae bloom. The future of healthy wetlands is at stake. It is imperative that proactive integrated catchment management becomes a priority.

21.01.2022 Friends of Bindaring Wetland with one of our huge bags of weed. Hand weeding is great exercise. Bindaring Wetland is a beautiful, shady place to explore. Many of the weeds we collect are harvested for compost and chook food, recycling naturally.

21.01.2022 What's happening here? The verge between Anstey Road cul-de-sac and Lovelock Bridge is being given solarisation treatment to kill weeds and unwanted grasses alongside the path. This is being done by the Town of Bassendean to assist the Friends group to maintain the central section of Bindaring wetland without the use of herbicides. Over a number of weeks the plants under the plastic will die from a combination of heat and darkness. This will prepare the ground for planting low shrubs when the season is right.

20.01.2022 While we await the real rain to start falling, a reminder of the importance of our local wetlands and the role they play in filtering water and providing habitat for birds, ducks, animals, water critters and people

15.01.2022 The lovely seedlings we planted 4 weeks ago have been growing well - along with a crop of healthy weeds. But while the ground is still damp the weeds are easy to pull, so we'll be able to make short work of these fast growing winter weeds that are out competing with the native seedlings in their midst. Come for your dose of bush, just round the corner Sun 6 Sep (rain is forecast but that'll make the work easier!) 9.00 - 11.30 - find us along the pathway marked by plant stakes.

15.01.2022 Awesome nature. Ningaloo. One of my favourite places in the world. Let’s preserve it. Pleeeease. X

12.01.2022 Here’s our not so wetlands.

11.01.2022 Today about half of the sandbags and black plastic was removed exposing the solarized ground beneath for planting on Sunday morning. Please drop by and put a few in yourself! We have 16 lovely species of low to medium shrubs around 500 seedlings to put in. There are also places to plant further in the bush plenty of room for safe social distancing. We’ll provide the tools. You won’t need to get your feet wet but wear sensible shoes and bring your own gloves. Please bring your own drink bottle and we will have some delicious morning tea to share with you. From 9am to midday between Anstey Road and Lovelock Place, Bassendean. Organised by the Friends of Bindaring Wetland and the Bassendean Preservation Group, supported by the Town of Bassendean and a Communities Environment Program grant.

09.01.2022 Good weeding result today - Kate found a (grevillea?) bush swamped by kikuyu grass - where a Moaning Frog was hiding. Great work!

06.01.2022 Fancy a bit of reveg this weekend? Head down to Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary in Bayswater

05.01.2022 It’s been a while - but with the weather this week conditions should be perfect to resume hand-weeding at Bindaring next Sunday, May 10 when the forecast is sunny and the rain should have softened the ground. The plan is to go back to a timetable of 9.00am 11.30am on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month till winter. You're welcome to pop in for a short time during the morning to see how things are going. We’re still working on the mid-section between Anstey Rd & Hyland St. Come and find us near the footbridge between Anstey cul-de-sac and Lovelock Place. There's plenty of room to spread out and follow safe social distancing. We’ll supply sanitised tools, hand sanitiser and a first aid kit.

03.01.2022 Hello Friends. Grateful to see 35 black cockatoos fly past this evening and across Bindaring Park. Groups of 11, 6, 5 and 7 red tails. Wonderful. And no they are not flying in circles and coming back.
