17.01.2022 The National Agreement on Closing the Gap which was announced this week carries a number of measures to support the goal - By 2031, there is a sustained increase in number and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages being spoken. Outcome 16 of the Agreement targets an increase in the numbers of people speaking languages, as well as those accessing commonwealth funded language centres to maintain and preserve their languages. The Government will be lookin...g to measure economic opportunities that arise for language speakers as well as tracking the use of language in communities, schools and media. The Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre hopes to be part of these new measures to meet these goals.

17.01.2022 Kakadu Bird Week - ngarradj song by Jill Nganjmirra. Jill and her family used to listen to elders telling this story about the sulphur-crested cockatoo, who goes looking for the nuts of the pandanus tree. These nuts hang from the branches and drop to the ground. The cockatoo gets excited and sings this song while biting the nuts, then has a full belly.https://youtu.be/ZjqZ2DLrNqI

16.01.2022 In 1948 the American-Australian scientific expedition to Arnhem Land went to Kunbarlanja (Gunbalanya) in western Arnhem Land. ABC journalist Colin Simpson recorded a morrdjdjanjno hunting song from Wurrik clansman Larry Marrawana. These songs were sung at sunrise before men went out to hunt these kangaroos. The words are in special morrdjdjanjno song language and refer to various aspects of the animal, their appearance, where they hide and their power as non-human persons. See video post below. Transcription by Lewis Naborlhborlh and Murray Garde.

09.01.2022 As part of the development of our Banksia Garden we have embedded Indigenous Australian quotes of the importance of Banksia to culture into the paths and landsc...ape of the garden, and translated them into English. Jill Nganjmirra (Ngalwakadj skin, Burlalhdja clan) chairperson of the Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre shares, "In the old days when our ancestors had a toothache, they would gather Banksia cones, place them in the smoke of the fire, then apply the heat from the cones to their cheeks. Then the toothache would stop. (Banksia dentata tropical Banksia)" Her translation is from Kunwinjku, one of the three languages still regularly spoken in the Kakadu National Park region. Korroko nawu dabborrabbolk bu birridoweni djudju kore kuyidme, wanjh birrimangi kuybuk, bu birriwolngwoni kore kunak, wanjh birringarlbakkinjerreni. Wanjh ngurdmi nawu djudju munguyh-munguyh. The theme of National Reconciliation Week is #InThisTogether. At the Australian National Botanic Gardens we look to share and value Indigenous Australians' rich plant knowledge that has been critical to their survival as the oldest living culture. The Banksia Garden will open in late 2020. Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre #reconciliationweek #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020 #Banksia2020 #anbg50th Visit Canberra

07.01.2022 New children's book "My Name is Patricia" in English language about a young Kune speaking student 'Patricia'. A self-published children’s book by Maningrida resident Ingrid Stonhill tells the story of ten-year-old Patricia, a local girl who balances traditional Aboriginal life with her ambition to excel at school. The story is told in English, but Kune is Patricia’s first language inherited from her mother and grandmother. Ms Stonhill, who is also the CEO of the Bawinanga Ab...original Corporation, said writing children’s books that bring about change is a personal passion. Ms Stonhill said the book was a two-year project, complicated by the challenge of translating the story into Kune. There is no Kune/English dictionary and some English words have no meaning in Kune, which is quite an ancient language and spoken by only a small group. It was important get it right because Kune is a language at risk of extinction. It is not well recorded or taught at school. Ms Stonhill said she fears a Covid 19 outbreak in Maningrida, and the inevitable deaths, could make the language extinct in a matter of months. My Name is Patricia is available for purchase through the Bábbarra Women’s Centre Website https://babbarra.com/ for $20 plus postage. Book sales will help fund Maningrida Art and Culture’s Language and Culture Office. (text from West Arnhem Wire) https://www.westarnhem.nt.gov.au//children-book-aims-inspi

01.01.2022 If you're trying to get your head and tongue around Kunwinjku verbs like ka-re, kabirri-ngun or wam, and feel almost like you want to throw in the towel, it's worth having a listen to Murray Guard from a few years ago giving the low down in these podcasts. Take them a bit at a time, and in between go out there and practise! https://bininjkunwok.org.au/audio/
