25.01.2022 TODAY: CryoEM sample presentation '101' with Andrew Leis 11am, 27 Aug @Bio21Institute'101' Platform Technology Series https://bit.ly/2D0VU8n

24.01.2022 Peer into the tiny world of peptides with Troy Attard interviewed by Andi Horvath for the University of Melbourne's podcast series 'Eavesdrop on Experts': As humans we tend to think in pictures, so using that approach you could think of peptides as segments of protein, says Dr Troy Attard, from the Melbourne Protein Characterisation platform at the Bio21 Institute at the University of Melbourne. You can think of protein like a ball of twine, a long linear string that is all scrunched up into a ball or various shapes. If you took a pair of scissors and snipped little bits of a segment of that string, that would be your peptide, Dr Attard says. They’re basically short proteins, which are chains of amino acids that are joined head to tail, a little bit like links in a chain.

24.01.2022 Melbourne Protein Characterisation is a diverse platform for investigating protein quality control, molecular interactions and structural analysis. The platform incorporates as part of the Australia Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) Facility for Innovative Cancer Drug Discovery and forms part of the drug discovery pipeline that connects Bio21 platform together. Protein discovery plays one of the important role on drug/vaccine development as human disease treatment. Among all ...of the different research technologies, synthesizing a peptide and studying the protein properties have been widely used on tackling the mechanism of the targeted drug/vaccine. This webinar will share with you information about how to make a peptide using peptide synthesizer and how to study your protein using analytical ultracentrifuge. Learning Outcomes This 60-minute session aims to provide the basic understanding about the application of peptide synthesizer and analytical ultracentrifuge. Presenters: Both Dr Troy Attard and Dr Yee-Foong Mok are platform technology specialists at Melbourne Protein Characterisation, Bio21 with extensive knowledge and skills on studying the chemical and biophysical properties of proteins. For more information, visit the platform here or contact [email protected].

24.01.2022 Hear some thoughts from members of the Faculty of Science, including Bio21's Uta Wille, about noticing when our colleagues are a bit down, showing compassion, listening and taking action if needed. It's RUOK today, but let's be open to reaching out and supporting each other every day, particularly this year, when we're all physically separated from each other.

07.01.2022 Did you know that mutations in Covid-19 can affect the ability of drugs to bind viral proteins (e.g. spike protein) or vaccines to effectively stimulate your immune system? Now researchers have a tool - COVID-3D - to predict these mutational hotspots, and check their effect, keeping science a step-ahead of the virus. This software tool and library has been developed by teams at the Bio21 Institute and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (David Ascher, Elston D'Souza and... Stephanie Portelli and others - follow the link to read their fantastic Pursuit piece) and contains information about ALL the protein structures that coincide with the whole SARS-CoV-2 genome including every known genetic mutation and its resultant mutant protein structure. Now that's impressive! The tool can also be used to help researchers recognise when mutations affect drug binding or to identify alternative targets for drug and vaccine development. To develop this tool, our team analysed the genome sequencing data of over 120,000 samples of SARS-CoV-2 from infected people around the globe (including those that uniquely affect Australia) to identify mutations present within each protein. This work was published in Nature Genetics. #covid19research #structuralbiology #computationalbiology #drugdiscovery #mutations https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au//locked-and-loaded-using-ge See more

04.01.2022 So how do we stop an enemy that isn’t alive, but hides within our cells? This is a question asked by many scientists across the globe, with answers urgently needed for many viruses including #sarscov2. Professor Spencer Williams from the University of Melbourne, and Professor Gideon Davies from the University of York in the UK, along with colleagues from the University of Warwick and University of Oxford, may have found a way to derail viral replication that could in turn become a broad spectrum anti-viral #drug target.
