16.01.2022 This 31 acre, off-grid, #biodynamic Lasqueti Island farm and vineyard is for sale! The landowners would love to see the farm be passed to farmers who will conti...nue the legacy they have started. The property is ideal for co-op ownership as the zoning allows for three residences and three cabins, as well as B+B use, perfect for hosting farm stays, workshops and agri-tourism. The owners are offering a transition period where they can be available to mentor incoming farmers and show them the systems of the property. See more
16.01.2022 Amazing AGM and biochar field day at Bagdad Hills Winery. Many thanks to all who attended and to Graeme and Pip Roberts for hosting the day. Wonderful opportunity for those across the state to catch up and swap learnings from the year past!
16.01.2022 Please comment on Tasmanias GM-free moratorium review All GM-free Tas People: Download the issues paper and read what to include in your letter to make it valid. https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au//2018-review-of-tasmanias-gmo-mo... Send your comments and evidence (short or long) on the marketing, trade, food industry and shopper reasons to continue the moratorium and keep the state GM-free. The Terms of Reference of the review include: The potential market advantages and disadvantages of allowing or not allowing the use of gene technology in primary industries, including food and non-food sectors; Domestic and international gene technology policy relevant to primary industries; Research and development relevant to the use of gene technology in primary industries. Health, safety and the environment will not be considered in the review. Possible points to note in your letter (use your own words): Fruit growers, beekeepers, wine and dairy producers gain premiums from Tasmanias GM-free reputation and branding in Australian and export food markets. Most support the moratorium in place since 2001; (Ask those you know to defend GM-free Tas) Canola is the only broadacre GM crop that Tasmanian farmers could grow, yet it would put the reputation of all primary industries at risk; (Big losses for possible small gains) GM has not produced higher yields, salt or drought tolerance, or more nutritious foods. Commercial GM plants - soy, corn, cotton, canola and sugarbeet - only resist being killed by Roundup weed killer so farmers can spray more herbicide more often. A few varieties also make their own insect toxins; (Many big promises were never delivered) Tas GM-free is only on commercial crops and does not ban or affect GM research, including small field trials of animals, plants or microorganisms; The world already produces enough food to feed everyone well but for various political, social and economic reasons insufficient affordable and nutritious food reaches the 1 billion people who need it most. Please also ask your family, friends, farmers and food businesses to comment. If we can assist you, please contact me.
