24.01.2022 This weeks political bun fight over koala protection policy has highlighted how misunderstood the legislation is. The new State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) for koalas results in little, if any, change for rural landholders. The SEPP focusses on property developers - farmers are not prevented from maintaining their properties and private native forestry is still exempt from the legislation. The Nationals seem to be pitting farmers against our wildlife and using vulnerable koalas to try and score political points. Koalas: 1, John Barilaro: 0.
