03.01.2022 Bad Bug Alert: Three-Lined Potato Beetle First recorded in Queensland in 1978, the Three-Lined Potato Beetle is actually quite attractive, until you see the dam...age it can cause. A known pest of plants in the Solanaceae family including potatoes, tomatoes and their relatives, they are described as un-common on potatoes and rare on tomatoes. Tomatillos however, are the key to their hearts... as our recently decimated patch is testament to. Adults are a small 7-8 mm, orange-yellow in colour with three lengthwise black stripes. The larvae hatch from small orange-yellow eggs hidden on the underside of leaves and remain in clusters, feeding on foliage. Covering themselves in their own excrement (presumably as a form of defence),larvae look similar to slugs or a 1980’s Sci-fi brute. Control via handpicking is possible for small infestations, however it can prove challenging for larger numbers, especially as the adults are shy and will quickly fly away when approached. Netting crops early can be effective as can spraying with Pyrethrum. For more information on natural sprays including Pyrethrum follow the link below: http://bit.ly/2EpfeHU See more

03.01.2022 Naughty, but nice: Species 514 found at Bellis, my sustainable garden is also the 26th bee species. Megachile deanii (syn Rhodomegachile deanii) the small fire-...tailed resin bee. I've seen these active insects zooming around, pollinating flowers (they love goldenrod) but it wasn't until we split my stingless bee hives that they settled down long enough for a photo. This solitary bee steals cerumen from stingless bee colonies to build individual nesting tubes. Their numbers have increased in tandem with more gardeners keeping stingless bees. Watch them nicking cerumen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-AShjERA2s

02.01.2022 Food security: Total ban on bee-harming pesticides likely after major new analysis from EU’s scientific risk assessors finds neonicotinoids pose a serious danger to all bees, making total field ban highly likely. See: https://www.theguardian.com//total-ban-on-bee-harming-pest

01.01.2022 Did you know snail bait containing metaldehyde and methiocarb are still on sale? These poisons can kill snails, slugs, earthworms, pets and children...and also ...snail and slug-eating blue tongue lizards*. If you must use snail bait, buy organic certified products, like Multiguard. They're inexpensive and widely sold. Don't risk killing two or four-legged biodiversity :-) * Caution: also known to eat strawberries. National Toxics Network
