25.01.2022 Another busy week with the Sure Foot Pads at our Tuesday Gymnastic Poles & Pad Clinic. We had a mix of horses and types of problems. One with shoulder and spinal tightness, another with intermittent front leg lameness and some extensive shoeing changes, ongoing saddle fit problems, and another that is clumsy when ridden. All horses showed some improvement and best of all, the owners are becoming educated in seeing the physical obstacles their horses are trying to overcome in order to please us and live comfortable lives in our care . Next clinic is Tuesday 21st and I'm currently looking at booking a weekend session if there is enough interest.

25.01.2022 Some very good points in this article.

23.01.2022 There a spot left in each of the 10.30am and the 12.30pm groups https://www.facebook.com/events/624069324876625/

23.01.2022 "When we confuse posture and confirmation there is more at stake then esthetics!" So true! I have recently been treating a horse with severely effected front legs that had difficulty walking and turning. This was considered to be genetic and offered little hope for the horse's future. After several Bowen treatments, Sure Foot Pad sessions, and stretching exercises, this horse's leg angles and walking have significantly improved and quality of life has been greatly increased. It is often counter productive to focus on the leg or area that presents as "lame". The entire body posture needs to be assessed as part of the treatment mixture.

22.01.2022 I'm very impressed with the benefits of the Equiband system.

19.01.2022 You can only do your best!! About a week ago we performed a HoofScan assessment on this horse, which we found to be more than -9deg NPA in hind feet Having a d...iscussion with the farrier, they felt more comfortable with Progressive Equine doing the initial corrective work & for them to take the horse over once the feet have stabilised & we have improved caudal foot structures & alignment Today we got to work with this very impressive horse. At NPA -9deg you would expect him to be less than ideal to shoe. But he was great to work with & obviously a very stoic animal. Whilst we were not able to get his feet to where we would like today, I feel he has a positive PA in both hind feet for the first time in a long while. Due to the underrun & crushed heels, prolapsed frog & very little depth under the wings of P3 we were quite limited in our options. Our goal being to get some stability & integrity in the caudal foot before working towards further improvement in alignment. This is definitely one of the tougher cases we have worked with, due to the poor condition of the feet, & we are hoping for a little luck over the nxt couple of shoeing cycles to help these feet along. Process Pre trim foot was NPA -9deg Post trim foot was NPA -3deg After Duo Elliptical shoe was applied PA was positive 2deg All up, a change of 11deg positive

19.01.2022 Sure Foot Pads are a regular part of my Bowen treatment package. However, the timing of their use is very important and it isn't a matter of just standing your horses on them every day. The horse's own situation and responses dictates when and which pads are used. You can lead a horse to water......but you can't make it drink .

19.01.2022 I am available for private sessions or groups on other properties prices starting from $80. All you need is a minimum of 12 poles and I bring the Sure Foot Pads with me.

18.01.2022 This is the perfect time of year to treat your horse to a Bowen treatment. Sessions last about 1 hour and cost $80 each horse.

17.01.2022 It's pallet time again Thankfully the border closures are not stopping our much needed Alkapellets pH Plus getting through! It is so rewarding to see so many of my Bowen clients thriving on this feed .

17.01.2022 I see the "fight" response when doing Bowen treatments. If the horse knows it can't escape from the pain it is suffering (flight), they will turn to aggression - and they mean it! It is important to read the pain signals even before touching the horse. A lot of it is obvious just watching the horse move. Some horses don't want me to touch them at all so I use laser instead, which they can tolerate and often enjoy. Then they might allow me to do a short treatment . They ju...st aren't "naughty" for no reason. https://www.youtube.com/watch

16.01.2022 The Sure Foot Pads are now an integral part of the work I do. Love them!

12.01.2022 This frame is an essential building block for the horse's ongoing performance .

12.01.2022 We've made some great progress with this boy from the Poles & Pads clinics. He has very tight hamstrings and biceps femoris and today we convinced him to give the slant pads a go under his back hooves. He even settled in and did a bit of swaying with the green pads under the fronts. His owner has been incredibly supportive of the process and had a lovely ride today. Smiles all round! .

09.01.2022 EQUINE BACK MOTION A lot of people have been asking on the earlier saddle post today about how much the horses back moves during exercise. There are a fair numb...er of papers now published on this but visuals are always good. Here is a short video of a horse walking and trotting on a treadmill viewed from above with painted markers along the spine and IMU's (orange) to record motion. Replayed at half normal speed Copyright Dr David Marlin 2020.

08.01.2022 Therapeutic intervention can be a grey area: is the horse in pain, or is the movement dysfunction mechanical? Pain needs to be addressed first - in the brain, i...t overrides all movement function. A successful rehab programme generally involves a combination of pain control and movement retraining. As practitioners, it is essential that each case is always evaluated for a primary pain issue, and referred for veterinary attention as necessary. Explaining the effect of pain in brain-body connection lets the client understand why this approach should be taken. There are NO shortcuts. When is the Equiband system appropriate in movement retraining? Veterinarians and equine therapists use clinical reasoning when considering integration of the Equiband system in equine rehabilitation. Buying cheap copies, made with inferior products and without professional guidance can be harmful to the horse - buyer beware!

07.01.2022 Thanks Gillian for this illustration on what is going on under our saddles.

06.01.2022 I am highly impressed with the effects of the Sure Foot Pads and have been using them with clients horses as well as my own for several months now. They can be combined with Bowen Treatments, the Gymnastic Poles & Pads Clinics fortnightly at NSW Equestrian Centre Lochinvar, at my Lake Macquarie address or I can come to you for group or individual booking. Message this page or phone Sue on 0417 261 550.

05.01.2022 At Husky Lodge Equestrian Centre in Lake Macquarie, we can offer rehabilitation services as well as regular lessons, that take in to account the physical ability of your horse. https://www.facebook.com/Husky-Lodge-Equestrian-Centre-207100545986838/

05.01.2022 It's always a good day when there's a Sure Foot Pad success . This boy was not impressed with the pads at all to start with, and this is his second session. He tolerated all four by the end of his Bowen treatment and finished off with some great yawning, licking and chewing.

04.01.2022 As a very simple guide that owners can use, the angle of the hoof should be similar to that of the pastern. The first photo with the shoe is clearly nowhere near the pastern angle, and this is evident from the dark lines showing on the hoof. No amount of body work no matter the modality, or under saddle training, will have lasting effect if the body is fighting against the hoof angle.

04.01.2022 As owners and riders we have often been guilty of only taking notice of the front hooves, thinking the back hooves take care of themselves. But, many of the horses I attend have contributing negative hind hoof angles (and sometimes front), to their pelvic and lower back pain issues. This can continue right through to the jaw where the pain manifests as bitting problems and owners immediately change or remove bits, rather than see the big picture. The FB page this post comes from has lots of simple diagrams where the angles of the pastern and hoof are drawn. Owners can easily photograph their own horse's hooves (standing square) and draw on these angles and check for themselves.

03.01.2022 A fascinating read discussing optimal muscle function in jumping horses. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/11/2/414

02.01.2022 These pallets of AlkaPellets pH PLUS don't last long!

01.01.2022 Are Sure Foot Pads just foam that can be purchased locally? Simple answer: NO. A piece of ordinary foam will raise the horse's foot off the ground, but that is not the only purpose of the Sure Foot Pads. "SURE FOOT Pads vary in density from Hard to Soft, providing a wide range of pattern variation for your horse to experience. The SURE FOOT Pads challenge your horse’s balance, activate proprioception, work the small postural muscles, and creates awareness. The degree of di...fficulty depends on the Pad density and number of hooves placed on Pads. Once the horse is familiar with SURE FOOT the pattern can be varied on any given day depending on the horse’s condition, medical history, and desired effect." You can book a Sure Foot Pad session on it's own for $50 or incorporate with a Bowen Treatment and it's FREE! Bowen Treatments start at $100 for first session and $80 for follow-up treatments. Horses are always given the opportunity to stand on the pads during their treatments. Most Bowen treatments last minimum of 1 hour. "These pads have been created and developed by Wendy Murdoch, SURE FOOT's effectiveness is acknowledged by owners, veterinarians, equine professionals, trainers, trimmers, and farriers around the world. Your horse has an opportunity to experience his own habitual patterns and find ease when standing on SURE FOOT Pads. Watch as he shifts from anxious to calm, and from calm to a deep state of relaxation. Even more amazing is these improvements last long after the horse walks off the Pad. Greater relaxation means, less stress, easier to train, greater freedom of movement, more resilience to the environment, and greater wellbeing."
