20.01.2022 CW: Racism, police brutality, Indigenous deaths #BlackLivesMatter (Check the comments for concrete action that we can all take!)... BSS stands in solidarity with the ongoing protests in America; with Bla(c)k people fighting systemic oppression around the world and against the brutality inherent to a racist police state. We urge our members to support the Black Lives Matter movement. More than that, we ask for action- especially by donating to and platforming PoC activism- whenever possible. It is important to also note the chilling similarities with what goes on at home: Australia is colonised land, stolen from First Nations people and continued through mass imprisonment, generational trauma, and economic deprivation. We benefit from their dispossession even today, and there can be no racial justice without Indigenous justice as well. Liking, sharing, or retweeting is fundamentally not enough. We need to step up, educate ourselves, and be there for the Bla(c)k community- now and always.

20.01.2022 PSA: UPDATE ON 2020 GPA RUMOURS We are aware of some circulating rumours (mostly to the effect that 2020 results will be counted for the 2022 Melbourne MD entry). Following a meeting between BSS and MDHS on Wednesday, we wish to clarify that such news has been NEITHER CONFIRMED NOR DENIED by the Faculty. ... As of the time of posting, we are not aware of any decision, vote, or amendment made by an official body of the University. We can confirm, however, that 2020 GPA will continue to be discounted for the Melbourne MD 2021 entry. We encourage people to continue to prepare, study and apply as they would under normal circumstances, and consult official MDHS channels/uni sites as the source for relevant updates. We are aware that the rumour has significantly impacted the mental health and decision-making of many in our community. We encourage everyone to not radically change their plans until more concrete information has been publicised. We would like to remind students that Counselling and Psychological Services is available here: https://services.unimelb.edu.au/counsel And the 24/7 mental health hotline is here: 1300 219 459.

15.01.2022 To all students in the BSS family (and beyond!) As you may be aware, the University has changed its admissions policy for post-grad MDHS degrees (Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry) such that 2020 grades no longer count towards the GPA requirement. We want to extend our support to all students who are affected- academically or emotionally- by this issue, and our inboxes are always open to chat. ... In the meantime, BSS are working with our friends at SSS and UMSU to gather student testimonials on how this policy has affected you. Please use your University email and fill out this form- it's completely anonymous, but you have the opportunity to make a written and/or video statement if you so choose. 10.01.2022 To the BSS family: We have received some updates from MDHS about the ongoing GPA situation. The Faculty are currently committed to implementing the changes to 2020 GPA calculation as announced several days earlier; that is, all grades obtained during 2020 will not count towards GPA for post-grad MDHS course applications (Medicine, Dentistry, and Optometry).... As of now, we are awaiting information on whether summer subjects completed in 2020 will be treated the same way. We are also awaiting confirmation on whether the change applies strictly to applicants for 2021 entry, or to all students completing a part of their degree in 2020. We understand that students have had a range of reactions to this policy, and many of us will have questions about its specific impacts. MDHS will be hosting an online information session on Monday June 1st, which we encourage everyone to attend. The webinar is limited to 500 students, but it will be recorded and uploaded as soon as possible. We wish everyone the best of luck with GAMSAT, and as always are ready to support students going through tough times as of late. Much love BB

08.01.2022 TL;DR- Biomed Bear wants you to check on your friends! [CW: mention of mental illness] Today is R U OK Day. It's such a simple thing to ask, and an even simpler thing to answer- but we consistently forget to do it in the midst of our daily grind. ... We know Biomed isn't easy. We balance work, class, assessments, and the full force of life in lockdown. There might never feel like a 'right' time to take a break, or a 'right' time to reconnect with an old friend. That's why it's ever so important to do it now. Take the first step in changing how we approach mental illness. We are all going through challenging times; there's no shame in talking, no shame in sharing, and no shame in asking R U OK. The University offers free counselling services at https://services.unimelb.edu.au/counsel/home. The university's 24/7 Mental Health Helpline is at 1300 219 459.

Although we cannot ensure specific dates+times for these refunds (due to our inability to access the BSS HQ), we will do our best to collate the details of every eligible refundee so that when the time comes, we can roll out the refunds to as many ticket-holders as possible.
