25.01.2022 Let’s talk about POST-PILL ACNE. It’s a hot topic these days and probably one of the biggest fears women have around ceasing the pill. And who wouldn’t right? You’re actively choosing to say sign me up for teenager acne. I get it, it’s scary, I’ve been there. When I ceased the pill, gosh almost 7 years ago now. I’ll be honest I didn’t even think my skin would breakout because I didn’t actually go on the pill for skin problems. It was purely contraceptive. I’d always had gre...at skin. So naively I ceased the pill and BOOM teenage acne and not just on my jawline it was all over my forehead and around my hair line. I hated it! I was so embarrassed to go out in public. Why does our skin look so good on the pill? It does it in 2 ways suppresses our sebum levels to childhood like levels which is why our skin looks so amazing on the pill. it also reduces our androgens namely testosterone to virtually nothing Why does our skin go cray cray off the pill? due to suppression of sebum production when we stop taking the pill, the body upregulates sebum (oil) production and oil production goes into overdrive. Yasmin, Brenda and Diane are your main sebum suppressing pills there is a temporary surge of testosterone after coming off the pill whilst the ovaries come back online. 25.01.2022 Lets talk BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS I know there is A LOT of talk about alkaline this and alkaline that in the body but there are a few excepts to this rule when it comes to where you want alkalinity and acidity. And your VAGINA is just one of those places where you WANT it to be a little more acidic. A more acidic vagina prevents yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis and bacterial infections flourishing down below. Which isn’t really the type of flourishing you want an...ywhere near your VAGINA. AMIRIGHT? For the ladies that suffer from BV, Staph or strep in the vagina working to get your vagina more acidic in conjunction with a complete gut and vagina microbiome overhaul is key. Internally I recommend using a combination of cooled organic green tea, lactulose and hydrogen peroxide. This supports the growth of beneficial bacteria and shifting the vagina to a more acidic state. courtesy of @hara_thelabel . . . . #naturopathgoldcoast #mentalhealthnaturopath #hormonehealth #megansmedicine #naturopathy #naturopath #functionalmedicine #healthylifestyle #pregnancyhealth #amenorrhoea #womenshealth #probiotics #wellness #herbs #herbalmedicine #healthyperiods #hormones #absentperiods #breastfeeding #hypothyroidism #pcos #endometriosis #pyrroles #periodproblems #bacterialvaginosis #breastfeeding #missingperiods #naturalmedicine #pregnancynaturopathgoldcoast #periods
23.01.2022 I’m back BABY This year has been a bit of a shit show for our family. For those of you who don’t know my husband was diagnosed in April with Barmah Forest Virus this resulted in extreme fatigue leaving him completely bed ridden. With hubby sick, the responsibility of raising our two children, COVID, caring for him, managing our 3 acre property, working and all the stuff that goes into raising a family was left solely on my shoulders. ... I won’t sugar coat, it’s been hard. I’ve never felt so overwhelmed in my entire life. I consider myself some one who can handle most things that life throws their way but this has been like nothing I’ve ever been through. I’ve cried, oh I’ve cried so much mostly alone in the closet hiding from the kids. The overwhelm and sleep deprivation has been all time! However, things are on the UP, Adam seems to have finally turned a corner in the last 3 weeks thanks to @owen_acupuncture - seriously you’ve saved my hubby. So now that he is starting to feel better, Olives back at kindy and I’ve got help with Zale on my working days I’ve finally got some space to connect back here with you. I’ve seriously missed connecting and sharing my knowledge with you all on these tiny squares. I’ll be back posting sometime this week and I’ll be back into my stories most days although I may jump off from time to time. Enjoy your evening and never take your health for granted. You don’t realise how precious it is until it’s ripped away from you.
23.01.2022 WHAT causes BREAST PAIN? This question was asked in my stories the other day and I thought it required a whole post. So here it is Breast pain/tenderness is common and there are a few reasons it can occur.... Iodine deficiency: iodine helps to make our breasts less sensitive to oestrogen Too much oestrogen relative to progesterone: oestrogen causes our milk ducts and glands to swell trapping fluid in the breasts High histamine: this is usually coupled with nasal congestion, hives, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, anxiety that worsens right before the period Medications: such as hormonal contraceptives Breast cysts Tag a friend who needs to read this source unknown. 23.01.2022 RESISTANT STARCH for GUT HEALTH. Resistant starch is AH...MAZING for gut health and helps to feed our gut bacteria much like a prebiotic. A win for any hormonal woes. Cooled white potatoes are rich in resistant starch. The cooling process actually increases the resistant starch in the potato. I usually bake my at the start of the day and have jacked potatoes for dinner that evening.
20.01.2022 To CREATE healthy HORMONES you need your gut working. It doesn’t matter if your body does all this great work to get your hormones from your bloodstream into your liver and gallbladder and then into your gut to be excreted. Because if those hormones do finally make it to your gut and can’t get out via your poop then all that good works gets undone. How? Because it allows those hormones to be recirculated back into your bloodstream. This can create a hormonal imbalance parti...cularly excess oestrogen. As you know this hormonal imbalance creates multiple issues including acne, PMS, headaches, brain fog, heavy periods, long cycles, fibroids and breast tenderness. 18.01.2022 Better late than never right? I was meant to do a PCOS series way back in August but with my family health situation taking a turn for the worse Instagram took a back seat! So over the coming week I’ll be posting my PCOS series for you all. This post is all about the signs & symptoms that PCOS can present with but PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder so no two PCOS pictures will present the same. If you’re reading this and thinking you ...tick a lot of these boxes then this is your friendly reminder to go and get yourself checked out. PCOS is a lifelong endocrine disorder but with proper management doesn’t have to rule your life. How many boxes does your PCOS tick? 18.01.2022 New 5.0-star Review: ""
18.01.2022 Is it REALLY PCOS? PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder and due its complexity it’s hard to get a diagnosis let alone the right one. With that in mind, it’s important to know that if you have been diagnosed with PCOS and this diagnosis doesn’t sit right with you then it might be worth investigating other possible causes for your hormonal issues. Because it may not be PCOS at all. The symptoms may fit PCOS but it may hypothyroidism masquerading as PCOS. I... see this one often. There are four main conditions that can present with symptoms similar to that of PCOS. I have outlined the symptoms that often present with the below conditions and how they may differ to PCOS. HYPOTHALAMIC AMENORRHOEA similarities include absent or irregular cycles, poly cystic ovaries differences include normal androgens, under eating, over exercising, high stress, low LH to FSH ratio. HYPOTHYROIDISM Menstrual irregularities, PCOS like ovaries (although they usually don’t meet the definition for polycystic) the key difference here is most women with hypothyroidism and not PCOS is their androgens will be normal. To check if your thyroid is out of whack: test for TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3 and Thyroid Antibodies. HIGH PROLACTIN acne, PMS, facial hair, breast pain, vaginal dryness and irregular and/or absent periods. To check if this is an issue: test prolactin in the blood. Levels higher than 500mIU/L can produce PCOS like symptoms. CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA similarities include acne, oily hair and skin, mood swings, infertility differences include premature development of pubic hair, early and rapid growth spurts as a child but overall short stature as an adult, early onset of menses Tell me below if what your doctor thought was PCOS was actually something else? 16.01.2022 BREAST pain TREATMENT Following on from my post last week. A follower asked if I could do a follow up post on the different types of treatment for breast pain. Treatment does of course depend on WHATS causing it.... To recap the main drivers are: Iodine deficiency: if this is the cause consume more iodine rich foods like nori, dulse and kelp plus add in a liquid iodine supplement Too much oestrogen relative to progesterone: check out my highlight on oestrogen dominance this will take you through the posts which talk about treatment for this, but I will say treatment is so varied for this and it really depends on why you have this imbalance in the first place. Could be stress, could be gut, could be a whole host of things High histamine: SAMe, vitamin B6, Quercetin, addressing gut health in particular SIBO, and reducing histamine rich foods Medications: such as hormonal contraceptives. Considering ceasing if this feels right for you Breast cysts: iodine works a treat for these See more
13.01.2022 Here’s the thing with SEED CYCLING if it’s the only thing you do in an attempt to fix your hormones then it’s likely it won’t work. Don’t get me wrong, I use seed cycling as a dietary tool for hormonal complaints but it’s used in conjunction with a multitude of other herbs, vitamins and minerals to combat the underlying cause of your hormonal imbalance. That said this is how I use seed cycling and how it works.... HOW IT WORKS Seed cycling works by alternating different types of seeds during the different phases of your menstrual cycle to support your hormones. Day 1-14: Follicular Phase: oestrogen and testosterone are the main players during this phase. Seeds to consume1 tbs flaxseeds and 1 tbs pumpkin seeds Flaxseeds are rich in phytoestrogens which can help both high and low oestrogen states. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc which helps to regulate testosterone levels Day 15-28: Luteal phase: progesterone is the main player during this phase. Seeds to consume 1 tbs sesame seeds 1 tbs sunflower seeds Sesame seeds help to modulate hormones and are a good source of calcium, magnesium, zinc and selenium. Sunflower seeds contain essential fatty acids which can convert to GLA to help cool off inflammation, reduce period pain and PMS. USER TIPS Buy whole seeds and ground into smoothie or sprinkle on top of oats, muesli. This is because the seeds are sensitive to oxidation which reduces their nutritional profile Best way to have them is in a smoothie If you don’t have a 28 day cycle or your cycles are irregular or absent. Take the seeds as if you do have a 28 day cycle. Tell me your experience with seed cycling. Did it work? See more
12.01.2022 WHY TAKE PROBIOTICS IN PREGNANCY? Most alternative health practitioners will supplement with probiotics in pregnancy, but the research around their efficacy on maternal health and birth outcomes has been lacking. A recent meta-analysis, which is a type of study that looks at all the studies of probiotics in pregnancy has summarised the benefits. ... The strains found to be most beneficial included Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces families. Questions? Comment below See more
11.01.2022 WHAT’S your PCOS type? Yup, you read right there are 4 types of PCOS. I know, I know, PCOS is complicated right? And unfortunately it’s about to get just that little bit more complicated. As practitioners (well most of us ) we are always striving to uncover what’s driving your DIS-EASE and PCOS is no exception. To treat PCOS you need to know what’s DRIVING it!... INSULIN RESISTANT PCOS if your insulin is high then this is your driver. Tests to get include: fasting insulin (not glucose), HBA1c. 70% of PCOS is driven by insulin. Treatment includes things like Berberine, Inositol, Cinnamon, B6, Magnesium, Fenugreek, Fennel, Goat’s Rue, and other diet and lifestyle strategies to manage blood sugar imbalance POST PILL PCOS you have this one if you have high androgens (all other causes have been ruled out) you don’t have high insulin and all these symptoms started after you came off the pill Treatment includes Green Tea supplement, peppermint tea, zinc, saw palmetto, reishi mushroom INFLAMMATORY PCOS Chronic unchecked inflammation can drive our ovaries to make too much testosterone. Inflammation is without a doubt a contributor in probably MOST PCOS cases irrespective of the underlying driver BUT if inflammation is driving your PCOS you may also experience skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis & dermatitis, IBS like symptoms, multiple food sensitivity, headaches, fatigue. Tests include functional gut testing, CRP, ESR and calprotectin ADRENAL PCOS only accounts for 10% of all PCOS cases. All PCOS patients have high androgens but in adrenal PCOS it’s the adrenal gland that is driving it. This is caused by an abnormal response to stress. Tests include DHEA & Cortisol. Treatment includes stress management techniques and supplements like melatonin, adrenal supportive herbs, magnesium, and vitamin c. Questions? Comment below
09.01.2022 How OESTROGEN gets RECIRCULATED back into the bloodstream from the gut. If you’ve ever wondered how oestrogen can make its way into your bloodstream after making it all the way into your gut. Then this is how. Oestrogen gets metabolised by your liver which make the oestrogen into something that is water soluble. Once water soluble it’s transported into the gallbladder where it mixes with bile. After this it’s promptly dumped into the gut where it’s HOPEFUL...LY excreted via your poop If you have high amounts of this enzyme Beta-Glucoronidase floating around this will cause the oestrogen to be recirculated back into your bloodstream. Beta gluconronidase is made by certain bacteria in your gut. There are a few things you can do to help reduce this enzyme. Calcium D Glucarate 1500-3000mg per day Prebiotics and Probiotics Herbs specific for any bacterial overgrowth like Golden Seal, Andrographis, Thyme, Oregano, Pine Bark, Pomegrante & Garlic Gut healing nutrients like Glutamine, Zinc Carnosine, Vitamin D, Larch, Vitamin A, Aloe Vera, Turmeric, Licorice & Marshmallow . . . . #naturopathgoldcoast #mentalhealthnaturopath #hormonehealth #megansmedicine #naturopathy #naturopath #functionalmedicine #healthylifestyle #pregnancyhealth #amenorrhoea #womenshealth #probiotics #wellness #herbs #herbalmedicine #healthyperiods #hormones #absentperiods #breastfeeding #hypothyroidism #pcos #endometriosis #pyrroles #periodproblems #undermethylation #breastfeeding #missingperiods #naturalmedicine #pregnancynaturopathgoldcoast #periods See more
08.01.2022 The CRITERIA you need to satisfy to get DIAGNOSED with PCOS. To be diagnosed with PCOS you only need to satisfy two of the below criteria’s. Androgenic signs show up as acne and hirsutism ... Irregular cycles showing up as missed or absent periods - I often see women who have a period maybe every 3-4 months or sometimes once a year Polycystic ovaries diagnosed via ultrasound. A key point to remember with this criteria is there must be 12 or more follicles in a single ovary ranging from 2 to 9 millimetres OR ovarian volume bigger than 10cm in a single ovary. ANOTHER THING TO REMEMBER Although called Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome PCOS has nothing to do with cysts. These so called ‘cysts’ are actually very small immature ovarian follicles. Within each follicle is an egg cell which is released during ovulation. For PCOS women, abnormal hormone levels keep these follicles from maturing and releasing that egg cell Which criteria’s do you satisfy? Tell me below . . . . #pregnancyhealth #amenorrhoea #womenshealth #probiotics #wellness #herbs #herbalmedicine #healthyperiods #hormones #absentperiods #breastfeeding #hypothyroidism #pcos #endometriosis #pyrroles #periodproblems #undermethylation #breastfeeding #missingperiods #naturalmedicine #pregnancynaturopathgoldcoast #periods
07.01.2022 Hands up who’s LIBIDO sunk LOWER than the titanic on the pill? Well you’re definitely not the only one. The pill is incredibly effective at its job of switching off our entire hormonal system. Taking it completely offline. How does it rob your body of testosterone? It does it in 2 ways. Increases SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) which does exactly what it says. It binds up our sex hormones in particular testosterone It suppresses the conv...ersation between your ovaries and adrenal gland. It’s your adrenal gland that produces the majority of a woman’s testosterone and so without that conversation testosterone production goes down. Testosterone is so important for women not only for the obvious sexual health benefits, but a loss of testosterone can result in bone loss vaginal dryness depression fatigue thinning skin incontinence There needs to be more awareness on the health implications of taking the pill. Whatever the reason you went on the pill, the pill is NEVER going to fix this problem EVER. It may seem like it has whilst taking it but as soon as you decide you’re ready to come off whatever was going on beforehand is going to be there. Often times much worse than it ever was prior to going on the pill. . . . . #naturopathgoldcoast #mentalhealthnaturopath #hormonehealth #megansmedicine #naturopathy #naturopath #functionalmedicine #healthylifestyle #pregnancyhealth #amenorrhoea #womenshealth #probiotics #wellness #herbs #herbalmedicine #healthyperiods #hormones #absentperiods #breastfeeding #hypothyroidism #pcos #endometriosis #pyrroles #periodproblems #breastfeeding #missingperiods #naturalmedicine #pregnancynaturopathgoldcoast #periods
07.01.2022 IRREGULAR cycles don’t = INFERTILITY Now I’m not saying having irregular cycles is NORMAL because it isn’t but it’s important to remember that just because you’re only getting a period every 3 months, twice a year or once a year doesn’t mean you can’t fall pregnant. Is it harder? yes..but it’s definitely possible. If you ovulate and an egg is released this makes pregnancy possible. ... 06.01.2022 FEELING ANXIOUS, TEARY, IRRITABLE AND/OR SLEEPLESS LEADING UP TO YOUR PERIOD? PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) is a collection of symptoms such as anxiety, breast tenderness, acne, bloating, constipation, moodiness and insomnia that is experienced or worsens in the 1-2 weeks leading up to your period. Why can it happen?... an imbalance between your hormones. It may not be that your oestrogen is high but the balance between your oestrogen and progesterone is out of whack. What can be helpful? St Johns Wort: be mindful you can't take this when you're on an OCP or anti-depressant Rhodiola: helpful for improving motivation and a better fit for people with low motivation, feelings towards depression Saffron: a stellar herb for PMS. The perfect all rounder Chaste Tree: works to boost progesterone levels 5-HTP: boost serotonin levels, cannot take with antidepressants SAMe: works on histamine levels, can take concurrently with an anti-depressant DIM: reduces circulating oestrogen levels Magnesium: soothes and calms the nervous system Vitamin B6: helps to boost serotonin levels Selenium: helps to support the formation of the corpus luteum which is essential for proper progesterone production Questions?
