20.01.2022 A free public lecture by Nobel Laureate Professor Elizabeth H. Blackburn, the Morris Herzstein Professor in Biology and Physiology, University of California, San Francisco will be on at the Octagon Theatre on the 3rd of August at 6pm! Elizabeth Blackburn is a leader in the area of telomere and telomerase research. In 2009, Prof. Blackburn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.... Prof. Blackburn discovered the molecular nature of telomeres, how the ends of chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the ribonucleoprotein enzyme telomerase. Telomeres are the protective, specialised DNA-protein complexes at the tips of chromosomes that help stabilise the genetic information. They're a simple repeated sequence of nucleotides. For vertebrates the telomere is TTAGGG and is repeated 2,500 times in humans! As chromosomes divide during cell division, each duplicated chromosome has a shorter telomere (due to what is known as the end replication problem) but in most people the enzyme telomerase adds more DNA to the ends of chromosomes to prevent telomeres getting too short. Unfortunately there are cases were the DNA is not replenished regularly, eventually causing the cells to malfunction or die. This can happen because of aging. Telomeres often erode down and can cause, and is frequently linked to, major chronic diseases that increase with aging, often occur together, and cause mortality. Blackburn and her research team at the University of California, San Francisco are working with various cells including human cells, with the goal of understanding telomerase and telomere biology. Come down to this free lecture at the Octagon to learn more about her research! Book a seat at: http://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/lectures/blackburn

12.01.2022 Nanotechnology: Do We Live in Richard Feynmans Science Fiction? A public lecture by Axel Lorke, Chair, Faculty of Physics and CENIDE, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany will be on in Murdoch Lecture Theatre in the Arts Building at UWA on the Monday 10th August at 6pm! In 1959, Richard Feynman, one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th century, delivered a lecture, envisioning a technology based on the ability to see, manipulate and build objects on th...e smallest scale - at the atomic level. Introducing to the world the concept that seeded the field of nanotechnology. Feynmans speech has now become a widely quoted manifesto of modern nanoscience. In this public lecture, Richard Feynmans talk will be taken as a wish list from the past to discuss which of his visionary ideas modern nanotechnology has been able to realise. How has his concept transformed science, technology, and our society as a whole? What has been discovered that Feynman might not have thought of? And what future technologies may emerge from present-day nanoscience research? Professor Axel Lorke received his PhD in Experimental Physics in 1991 from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat (LMU) Munich. In 2000 he was appointed Full Professor (C4) of Experimental Physics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His work focuses on the electronic and optical properties nano-structures and low-dimensional semiconductors. Professor Lorke has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the field of nanotechnology and he presently serves as scientific director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Analytics on the Nanoscale and board member of the Nanoenergy Technology Center. To RSVP to this free lecture, book a seat at http://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/lectures/lorke
