The extraordinary events of COVID-19 have highlighted the imperative need for medical research and innovation. Medical research saves lives and science will play a major role in solving the crisis the world is facing. 21.01.2022 UPDATE: Due to the extended stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne Cynthia has had to update her original plan. Cynthia will now run the 50km over the course of 2 days and will run a circuit that will keep her within 5 kms of her home. Cynthia McLarty is due to celebrate her 50th birthday on September 30th 2020 and she would like to commemorate this milestone by giving back to the community and to help raise funds for the Bionics Institute's infant hearing research program. Cynth...ia's son Sam was born profoundly deaf and at fourteen months of age was one of the youngest children in Victoria to receive a cochlear implant. Cynthia is going to run 50kms from Mornington to Portsea and will donate all the proceeds she raises back to the Institute. Dementia typically affects a person’s thinking, behavior and ability to complete day to day tasks. Did you know that research suggests people with even mild symptoms of hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia and those with significant hearing loss may be up to five times more likely?... At the Bionics Institute, we are developing a novel technology to treat hearing loss which we believe will be a game changer in the use of drug therapies to treat inner ear damage. 14.01.2022 It is national stroke week, and we would like to acknowledge our researchers, who are investigating a stroke therapy using targeted low-level electrical stimulation. Our team led by A/Prof Chris Williams, in collaboration with researchers from the Florey Institute for Neuroscience and Mental Health, have developed a stimulator that can enhance functional recovery and guide management after stroke. The results from this project will enable clinical therapeutic trials to be initiated for patients with middle cerebral artery stroke; enhancing outcome and optimising management has great personal and societal benefits. 11.01.2022 We are excited to announce in world-first studies, that our researchers have found a novel way that could improve the quality of hearing for people with cochlear implants. A/Prof Rachael Richardson and her colleagues have established that by adding light via optogenetics to the existing electrical stimulation provided by a cochlear implant, the accuracy of nerve activation is improved, thus potentially improving hearing outcomes for recipients of cochlear implants.
