25.01.2022 Look what Falko found on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0IRlaEeBfM&t=21s

24.01.2022 Growth room trials this year are providing new insights. When soils are saturated, Bioprime impacts on the colonisation of roots by bacteria changes. This explains in part why Bioprime works better in dryer rather than wetter conditions. Once we have worked this out, we hope we can develop a wet weather formulation. And welcome back Anna Schumann! Now the mum of Amber, Anna returns to our DNA lab to help Suvi Honkanen with our research program. What a nice partnership - Anna trained at the Max Plank in Germany, and Suvi at Oxford in the UK, a world leading research team in Australia at Bioscience.

24.01.2022 Long range rainfall forecast (BOM) looks a bit glum for grain production with 75% chance of less than average early rainfall.. But our summer rainfall has given soil moisture at depth. Good idea to get roots growing quickly? It looks like the year for Bioprime Seed Treatment to shine. Trials are going in at Buntine & Badgingarra and already in at Esperance. Summer pot trails have again shown Bioprime Seed Treatment works consistently to get better early establishment. But (because we measure everything) we find the treated seed makes plants use less water! We suspect this is due to stimulation of bacteria called Burkholderia, known to be associated with drought tolerance.

23.01.2022 Want to work for Bioscience in the lab and the paddock? Go to Seek, look under Plant Scientist.

22.01.2022 Well done to Bioscience staff who patiently hand seeded and hand treated this year's Bioprime trial at Forrestdale. This year we will recover rhizosphere soil week-by-week, extract the DNA, and follow the changes in microbial populations over time, comparing different Bioprime treatments with untreated controls. The results from last years work on soil pH and fertiliser application rates should help our farmers decide where to spend their hard-earned money on crop inputs. The... graph shows early crop establishment with and without Bioprime at 4 fertiliser application rates, from none, low, average to high (the numbers are NPK units respectively in a poor sandy soil, green bars with Bioprime, grey bars without). For technically minded folk, it was a fully factorial randomised block design, 8 replicates, error bars are SEM between reps, p values are (.02 - .0002) Take home message, modest fertiliser applications with Bioprime gives the best return.

22.01.2022 Field trial results are starting to come in. It seems the outstanding success is Bioprime seed treatment. Our trials have showed up to 28% better early establishment. At Liebe Group's Buntine trial, with poor August rain and low tillering, this translated to a 7.5% yield increase, compared to 15% at Forrestdale. Our farmers are reporting better yields than expected, so things are looking up. Non-wetting soils are now well under control !! But now there is a w buzz about new technology we have developed for irrigators. Once the patents are bedded down, we can start to explain.

21.01.2022 Smokey Friday. Came very close to the lab, but it was nice to see the Fireys protecting the states strategic assets.

20.01.2022 Quincy Quenda got our advice about care of his pigs. He is worried that Alice, Betty and Candice are a bit too casual with their table manners. Field trials have had a great year. Plenty of winter and spring rain has boosted tillering. Samples and data from Buntine, Dandaragan and Forrestdale accumulates. Yield results in December - only a month away!

18.01.2022 Bioscience is a nice place to work. We reflected on the weekend. Some of our people engaged with their community, gave presentations, sought to teach folk about gardens, about soil. They did very well. But what was so pleasing was their work mates, with partners and family, turning up to support them. What a team!

18.01.2022 We had the good fortune of having Johanna Steigleder (from Hochschule Weihenstephan Trisdorf University in Bavaria) complete her research thesis at Bioscience. Her work looked at early crop establishment, and the interaction between Bioprime applications and fertilisers. She also investigated non-wetting soil, and the impact of Bioprime on Lupin root nodulation. Her hard work gave us lots of valuable information, particularly the different patterns of nodulation when seed is treated with Bioprime compared to rhizobium inoculants. Lots of new projects in horticulture. We have installed electronic probes from SenTek at Supafresh to optimise water and fertigation systems in baby leaf production.

18.01.2022 Looks like 2020 will be very busy! We have 2 new projects in irrigated pasture, new R&D clients in broadacre cropping, and Carbon Ag Solutions 2019 research program is finished, reviewed, and such a great success, it is expanding. To top that off, now we have won a substantial R&D grant to further develop liquid fertilisers for cereal production. The only way this can all get done is with more hands and shoulders to the wheel. Look at SEEK if you are looking for a challenging job as a research assistant.

16.01.2022 Spring is just around the corner. It seems everyone got good winter rain. Field trials at Buntine, Dandaragan and Forrestdale look fantastic. We also welcome Falko Mathes to Bioscience (and congratulate him on the birth of his first child Oscar last week).

13.01.2022 Wow! Bioprime field trial results are in - after 5 years of work we are getting ever closer to finally nailing it! It is always a bit complex - the year, the paddock, the fertiliser used, the way you apply products - all interacting. But this year, with three trials sites, all structured the same way, we can see more clearly what is happening. ... At the Buntine long term Liebe Group site, in the third year of doing exactly the same thing on each of the 72 plots, with 9 replicates of each treatment in fully factorial randomised blocks, we had an ideal climatic year. Good, even rainfall, nice temperatures, good, pH- neutral fertile soil (thank you Stuart McAlpine for giving us a good paddock that resisted frost) and we get huge yields (3.3 tonnes in a 2 tonne average area). Seed treatment with Bioprime shows that even in a great year, you get a solid return on the investment. But in a good year, things are hard to improve much further. At Moora, first year of trials with the West Midlands Group, soil pH a bit acidic, cation exchange not as good, Still a very good season -who could complain? With 8 replicates of 9 treatments, Bioprime makes a much bigger difference. Both seed treatment and post emergence application of Bioprime give about 20% yield improvement. - huge return on investment. And at our deliberately poor, but highly managed Forrestdale soils - acidic, low ion exchange, poor fertiliser - but good, steady rainfall year, BANG! 25 - 30% better yield. Next step - all the soils collected throughout the year from each site will now go through the DNA lab. Which soil bugs made this yield improvement happen? What exactly did Bioprime change? How can we make it better for each soil type? Each harvested wheat sample will go through protein analysis - how much better is the value? . Much more to do! Summer means growth room trials start again. Thanks to our Falko, Anna and Bruce, (as well as Living Farms for again running our trial site program- so well managed Richard Devlin and crew, you have to love those guys). We also acknowledge Ann Smithson (now a mum) whose brilliant command of statistics gave us such a robust trial design. Exciting times. Soil microbial ecology is becoming tamed for better productivity and sustainability.

12.01.2022 Things are getting tough - uncomfortable, worrying. But it is affirming to know that our clients, people who grow food, are tough and determined to see this through. We have become very busy addressing their concerns. What fills me with pride is that most of the questions relate to how they can best protect their workers. We keep the answers simple. ... Cleanliness? - they already know this, have had sanitation training and wash stations for years. Separation? - that is a bit harder as harvesting is about efficiency, so it will have to take longer. Surveillance? - Infra-red thermometers (nape of neck and under tongue). Surfaces? - metholated spirits 70% in water to spray down the entire packing shed, tractor cab, tool box, chemical shed, fert shed. Is my food safe? The virus only gets people. If your people are safe, your food is safe.

10.01.2022 Someone likes our stuff: http://www.futuredirections.org.au//soil-carbon-soil-orga/

10.01.2022 One of the best things about science is discovering stuff. The last growth room trials showed us that Bioprime treated plants seemed to grow bigger, but use less water! So we set up a trial to examine this phenomena more carefully. We again demonstrated Bioprime Seed treatment produces a bigger seedling faster. And the bigger plants initially use more water. But then, the bigger plants start to use LESS water!... But then something even more interesting happened. When we deliberately put all the treatments under drought stress, the untreated pots showed severe water stress, going yellow and becoming limp. But under the same soil water content, the Bioprime treated plants did much better. (see the photo, Bioprime treated plants on the left, bigger, greener, less wilting).

08.01.2022 Charles Massy has wisdom to share here.

07.01.2022 Good news - Johanna got top marks for her thesis! Well done and best luck for your future career. Thanks for your help.

05.01.2022 Went to Channeybearup so see BerrySweet's new (100 acre) berry farm between Manjimup and Pemberton, perfect climate for berries. Stunning yield and quality. Never seen raspberries more productive, strawberries are massive, and now blackberries and blueberries are coming on line. BerrySweet have been using Bioprime for disease control for many years - so no disease here. Also, Forrestdale field trials are being (manually) harvested - see Nadine, our Sunshine Harvester.

05.01.2022 Rain is starting. Farmers are out sowing crops. Long range forecasts look good for WA. Time to get our field trials in. We continue to test the latest version of Bioprime Duo. Falko designed and conducted a trial to definitively test what has been bugging him for a while. At issue, for how long can you grow wheat in a little pot in a growth chamber, and still translate the data into what happens in a paddock? The answer seems to be about 30-40 days. But the data shows somethi...ng only hinted at previously. Bioprime-treated plants grow larger shoots, yet use less water than untreated plants. We have to investigate and optimise this. Perhaps farmers facing a dry finish could get a new management option. Table grape growers in the Swan Valley are twigging to how Bioprime increases grape quality and yield. With a warm winter the warmer spring, keeping leaf and fruit ratios just right and in balance was pretty tricky through summer. Other growers started noticing a Padbury Avenue grower had much bigger bunches, higher quality. What is your secret Phil? "Bioprime I've been using it for 3 years, watching my soils become more alive, my vines easier to manage"

05.01.2022 We've heard from our founder, a former politician, a gardening guru, a farmer and an industry leader. Now we bring you a scientist. In the latest in the Soils f...or Life video series, former Australian Chief Scientist, Professor Robin Batterham, warns that the world has lost two thirds of all soil carbon since the introduction of industrial agriculture. 04.01.2022 Another job going. Horticultural scientists needed. Have a look at seek

03.01.2022 Maybe because it is spring (?) there is lots of good news from Bioscience. WA grain growers are having a nice season - winter rains were mostly good, frosts were mild, and now spring rains promise a good finish. Look how our trials have progressed - big fat grain heads! Greenhouse growers are also doing very nicely, new technology for better climate control being tested with great results.... And the newest product, Bioprime Pasture, still undergoing field trials, looks very promising (according to our Dorper flock - who can't leave the test plots alone). But the best new thing is our website, updated and modernised by Nadine Benker. Nadine did her research thesis at Bioscience, helping to develop Bioprime, then came back to work in environmental engineering. Now she is the mum of Leah (what a cutie!) and does our website stuff from Germany.
