25.01.2022 South Australian Blue Gums - an explosion of colour (Eucalyptus leucoxylon leucoxylon)

25.01.2022 Our first monthly iNaturalist theme is... Orchids!!! Australian terrestrial orchids require symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi for the seeds to germinate and many also require a specific insect pollinator. Some even use mimicry to attract pollinators. Although there are orchids flowering throughout the year, the greatest diversity is between September and December. So now is the perfect time to get out and go orchid spotting. Some great field guides for orchid ide...ntification are "Start with the Leaves" - by Robert Lawrence, "Focus on Flora" - by Kersbrook Landcare Group and "It's Blue with Five Petals" - by Ann Prescott. Image: Diuris pardina - Spotted donkey orchid or Leopard orchid.

18.01.2022 With so many beautiful eucalypts and wattles flowering around SA, we have decided to make this fortnight's iNat theme Australian Trees! 10.01.2022 We’re going broad for this months iNaturalist theme: invertebrates. Those animals that do not possess a vertebral column. These include molluscs , annelids (pretend that’s an earthworm not a caterpillar emoji), cnidarians and of course arthropods (which make up over 80% of all described extant species). Invertebrates live in mostly terrestrial and freshwater systems. The major threats to invertebrates are: residential and commercial development; biological resource use (logging and wood harvesting); and agriculture and aquaculture (IUCN 2020).
