23.01.2022 @epicgardening EPIC NEW FENCE - My friend and epic general contractor + landscape designer + tv host @sarabendrick and I put in this new garden fence to replace the picket fence...look how it turned out! . I rebuilt the fence for few key reasons... . 1. LIGHT - The pickets were quite tall and the tops of the pickets were throwing shadows into the upper 50% of my garden beds most of the day, meaning I had a weird microclimate at the top of all of my beds. The shorter fence and... metal grate will let in much more light. 2. SUPPORT - If necessary, I can plant vining plants at the top of my bed and have them trail through the grates and grow in the front of the fence, making even better use of space. 3. UPDATE - The fence posts were rotting out and the pickets were chipped, broken, and old. Sometimes it's nice to have a refresh. 14.01.2022 @kitchengarden_pnw New path who dis! Still can't believe this is our new front yard path! We worked all weekend weeding, digging (fu sod netting! ), hauling dirt, shoveling gravel, leveling the ground and area beneath the stepping stones with sand.. Planting and watering in the newly planted perennial flowers (hello one and done!) All this cost about $150 in materials! Not bad! All the rocks used for edging was hand placed and sourced from around our property. That cornersto...ne piece sparks extra joy. It was lost in obscurity -- half buried in a corner and covered by ivy. Now, brought to the glory it deserves! Who knew rocks could spark such joy? As for process, also amazes me how spontaneously this all came together. I've been thinking about building this pathway for a while but couldn't commit to a holistic plan so didn't want to get started..and then we had some leftover gravel, and one thing led to another... And tada! A pathway appears! And I'm so delighted with the end result. 10.01.2022 @epicgardening DIY RAISED BED MIX - When filling raised beds for the 1st time, you're presented with a problem that - if not solved correctly - will cause you YEARS of issues in your garden: how to fill the beds with soil. With a soil mix, you want to achieve 3 major things: . 1. FERTILITY - Soil needs organic matter, usually around 5%, to support a diverse ecosystem of life within it, and thus give your plants what they need to grow. 2. DRAINAGE - The organisms and roots in ...the soil need oxygen to live, which they won't have if your soil holds on to too much water. 3. WATER RETENTION - That said, you also need your soil to hold on to enough water so that your soil life and plants aren't constantly struggling to get enough. A good general ratio is 50-60% quality topsoil - brownish in color, NOT clay (I made this mistake), and not clumpy when moistened and squeezed. Next, add 30% high-quality compost, preferably from multiple sources of material - food scraps, forest products, and mushroom compost are all great options provided they're well-composted and broken down. This adds in your fertility as well as a healthy dose of water retention and diverse size of soil particles. Finally, 10% "dealer's choice" organic matter! I like to mix in whatever's around my local area - fallen leaves, worm castings from my @urbanwormco bag, bokashi compost scraps, etc. Whatever you have that will round out the bed. This is a GREAT way to build your own raised bed mix that will get you off to the RIGHT start instead of buying 3 cubic yards of 'garden soil' that's super woody / clay. P.S. 05.01.2022 @epicgardening POTATOES - TO HILL OR NOT TO HILL? . Last year during the #apocalypsegrow challenge, where I lived off of only what I could grow, fish, forage, or barter, potatoes were a HUGE staple of the diet. You could even say I became...Potato Daddy . To ensure my success, I diversified my growing methods: . 1. Potatoes in Containers... 2. Potatoes in Raised Beds 3. Potatoes in Ground - No Hilling 4. Potatoes in Ground - Hilling . Guess which method won? In-ground, no hilling...hands down. But why? New potatoes grow ABOVE the seed potato at the ends of rhizomes. At the same time, the main stem keeps growing higher. The logic of hilling is, if we cover more of the main stem, we create an opportunity for more rhizomes to form and thus we get more potatoes. BUT! We're also covering up stems and leaves at the same time, which are the energy generators for our potato plants. Given that many of us grow early or midseason potatoes, which form new potatoes pretty darn close to the initial seed potato, it doesn't make a ton of sense to hill very high...basically, just cover up the new potatoes with some soil to prevent solanine buildup (green potato) and you're all set. Even a late-season potato will only form new potatoes to a max of about 12" above the seed potato, so things like "Potato Towers" seem, to me, to be a lot of extra effort for not a lot of extra reward. Keep in mind this is simply my experience and my reasoning. Ive already harvested about a dozen radishes and 6 mini bok Chois. Im wondering if you guys have any suggestions on making this space more productive. Im thinking succession planting, compact / high yielding varieties and smart planning.
