23.01.2022 @sulcatagrove We planted fifty strawberry plants yesterday. Earthbox received their plants in earlier this week, so we drove to Ellenton to purchase a flat. Commercial strawberries are typically planted into heavily treated soil and sprayed with fungicides throughout their growth. Each year when we grow our own, we grow them without any pesticides or fungicides. The key has been removing any leaves which begin to get a fuzzy appearance and to keep plants clear of older..., dead leaves. This requires checking on plants daily. The hard work is well worth it though for delicious, healthy berries. We normally grow strawberries in earthboxes, which have a wicking system to water the plants. This helps avoid fungus from overhead watering. Craig plans to add drip irrigation to the girls’ raised beds soon Valerie makes delicious strawberry jam each year with the ones she grows. We are hoping to grow enough this year to freeze and freeze dry some. The raised beds are made in Australia by @birdiesgardenproducts . We purchased them from @epicgardening The bottom half of the beds are filled with old logs and branches, then we filled with a bulk organic potting mix, and topped with a quality organic potting mix. 04.01.2022 @zoes_little_garden I gradually realized that if you never have any bare patches in your planters then you’re not doing succession planting properly. I’m trying really hard to have a steady flow of seedlings ready to plant, that line up with other plants that need to be removed. Tonight (yes I do my seedlings at night, it’s a waste of garden time to do indoor gardening during the day) I’ll be sowing some cucumbers (for gherkins specifically, I actually hate cucumber) which wi...ll replace the snow peas that are dying back. I also want to get another couple of zucchinis started- some for friends, and one extra plant for me to give me a steady supply through to winter (and maybe throughout winter if I’m lucky).
