24.01.2022 Im stoked to be a Chief Counter for BirdLife Australia and you can be a counter too. The Aussie Backyard Bird Count 2020 is just around the corner. Its the best... way any of us can get involved with some citizen science and help add valuable data nationwide about our amazing birds and their distribution. The whole family can be involved and all it takes is 20 mins sometime between the 19th -25th October. You can join me by registering here ; https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/?Costa You can do your count in your backyard, at the local park, at nan and pops place, wherever you like. If you dont have the app you can always fill out the forms on the website but the main ingredient you need is 20 minutes to sit or stand and observe what birds are around that location. There is a live launch of the event of Monday 19th and Ill let you now about that on the day. Heres links to the Birdlife Australia Website and Aussie Backyard BirdCount Website, also the Facebook Instagram and Twitter pages for all the info you need to know and lots of great facts. Ill be doing a few counts over the week and will go live on one of them and we can talk about our bird counting experiences. Let the family know, the grand kids, nieces, nephews, neighbours and have some fun supporting our birdlife and recording our biodiversity. After the year that has been this data is even more valuable to see just how our birdlife has faired given the bushfires and ongoing drought. 20.01.2022 Brilliant news: some contract details are still being finalised but it looks like we’ll have around 960 hectares of bittern-friendly rice with Riverina LLS this... season! Huge thanks to the dozen growers, and to all that get behind wildlife-friendly farming and bitterns in rice. Bittern-friendly rice is about maximising opportunities for successful breeding, centred on an early and sufficient ponding period, but also including adjacent habitat refuges, grassy banks, 'nesting pad’ trials, and fox/cat control. The in-house joke is that it’s rice-friendly bittern farming See more

20.01.2022 We have partnered with SunRice, the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to deliver water to this be...autiful Black Box Wetland on the Billabong Creek system, West of Jerilderie. Middle Wetland had infrastructure installed to allow water to inundate a larger area of the wetland, and 2020 was the first year it was trialed. Nearly 200 hectares has been inundated, with some great early responses. Over 19 different species of waterbirds have been recorded foraging in the wetland, and the Nitre Goosefoot and Tangled Lignum understorey are lapping up having wet feet for the first time in a very long time! Thanks to all our partners who help make watering wetlands possible!

19.01.2022 Birdlife Murray-Goulburn is a branch of BirdLife Australia based in the Goulburn-Broken Catchment in Northern Victoria. Our members come from Benalla, Shepparton, Tatura, Mooroopna, Numurkah, Seymour, Alexandra and all points in-between. We are a small friendly group of birdwatchers who meet once a month (generally on the 3rd Saturday) and go for a stroll around some bushland in our area and look at some birds. We meet at 9am, birdwatch for a few hours, stop and have some l...unch, then, if the day is nice, we may do another short walk after lunch. If you are interested in joining us on a walk, you are more than welcome to come along and try it for yourself. Pack a lunch and a camping chair, wear walking shoes, and bring a pair of binoculars if you have them. We can organise a lift if you haven't got your own transport. You will find our outing schedule here. http://birdlife.org.au//docume/MG-2016-calendar-5th-ed.pdf If you have any questions, send us a message with your contact details and will can call you back.

06.01.2022 We’re chirping very loudly about the Aussie Backyard Bird Count this month! Get counting from 19-25 October! To complete a count, spend 20 minutes in one spot... and noting down the birds that you see. You will need to count the number of each species you spot within the 20 minute period. For example, you might see 4 Australian Magpies, 2 Rainbow Lorikeets and a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. If you can identify birds by their calls, please include these in your count, but if you aren’t sure of a bird without seeing it, please exclude it rather than making a guess. The Aussie Bird Count app has a handy field-guide to help you identify birds. Submit your counts on the app and contact BirdLife Australia BirdLife Murray Goulburn if you have any questions! 06.01.2022 It is with such excitement that I share this post with you all. Yesterday Regent Honeyeaters were spotted in one of our members gardens at Greta West! It was a ...family of three - the male was a captively bred bird released in Chiltern in 2017, the female was a wild bird and the young bird was a recent fledgling. Such an amasing sighting - I was there for over an hour, just observing the parents feed the fledgling. It is moments like these which realise the years of onground work to help protect a critically endangered species. Photo credit: Kate Daniels. See more

01.01.2022 As well as swans and cygnets we were very excited to spot magpie geese at Doctors Swamp near #Murchison - they are not common in the catchment and usually only ...come down from the north when there is enough water in our landscape.
