23.01.2022 An interesting read for the leatherworker. Further to this epic body of work, here’s an explanation of how Steve Padley from WA built the components (with the help of Prince Armory’s patterns and video tutorials) to make both an aesthetic and practical suit of armour. Steve says I got the patterns online piece by piece from Prince Armory with tutorial videos on each element giving hints and tips on how he achieves certain effects in the process. I learnt a lot in the buil...d, but did a couple of things differently. Firstly, on the helmet, I tooled a wolfs head onto the side panels and used acrylic paints to enhance the image. The original helmet design had a encompassing chin guard panel but I did not use this as I am a qualified archer, I wanted to be able to aim and shoot arrows whilst wearing the helmet. The original chin guard would have got in the way, so Instead I made a Covid 19 style face mask that is a glove fit to the face. I can actually put a P2 dust mask inside if needed. The chest guard (Cuirass) was next and has articulating panels so the torso has good level of movement. The shoulder pads (spaulders) were next each one is strapped across the chest and under the opposite arm, however I want to modify these so they are buckled direct onto the breastplate. The hip panels (Tassets) once made, have to be positioned to suit the person wearing the armour but the buckles and straps provide some latitude of adjustment so they hang correctly. The scale skirt panels was perhaps the most laborious items requiring over 300 scales to make up the front and back panels. To cut these scales I used a 25mm belt end cutter to produce the elliptical scales. This was most useful for providing a quick method of producing a consistent scale size and shape. Lastly are the shin protectors (Greaves) The original pattern calls for buckles for fitting and securing, which I didn’t like to use as they could catch on things as you walk around, so I opted to use a single long lace to pull up the open inside leg split panel. The gold highlighted embossing is done with stamps and coloured using Metallic ink Gel pens that you can buy in stationary or art shops. One hint on this. It is important to wait until the gel ink is completely dry before applying any kind of leather sealer. (I use Resolene ). If you are too impatient and apply a sealer too soon the ink can streak and you can have metallic fleck streaks that can be seen if the light catches it at certain angles. The leather used, purchased from Birdsalls was 2.5mm - 3mm veg tan although you can go thicker (up to 5mm). I am now looking at doing a female version of this and adapting the pattern with different design elements of my own and perhaps putting into it a lot more artistic design elements. We look forward to the female version, Steve! Absolutely awesome work, including the wolf helmet and an enormous amount of hours spent on this adventure, Im sure! See more

01.01.2022 Customers, please remember to bring your mask when you are visiting our shop ! It is mandatory to wear a face mask in certain indoor settings in Sydney. Wearing masks in high-risk settings is one important way we can reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19, along with physical distancing, washing your hands regularly and getting tested immediately with even the mildest of symptoms.... NSW Health understands the Public Health Order will not cover every situation where wearing a mask may be appropriate. We are asking the community to use common sense. Please follow the existing public health advice and wear a mask when you can’t physically distance. Thank you everyone for your understanding.
