24.01.2022 The pratincoles are a group of birds which together with the coursers make up the family Glareolidae. They have short legs, very long pointed wings and long forked tails.
24.01.2022 Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus) is a large smoky-grey or black parrot of the cockatoo family native to New Guinea, Aru Islands and Cape York Peninsula. It has a very large black beak and prominent red cheek patches.
24.01.2022 Brown-backed Honeyeater (Ramsayornis modestus) - one of only two Australian Honeyeaters to build a fully enclosed nest.
22.01.2022 Eastern Yellow Robin - (Eopsaltria australis) Like all Australian robins, it is not closely related to either the European robin or the American robin. It belongs to the genus Eopsaltria, whose Australian members are known colloquially as "yellow robins", as distinct from the "red robins" of the genus Petroica. At 15 to 16 cm in length, it is one of the larger Australasian robins, and one of the most easily observed. Pairs and small family parties establish a territory, sometimes year-round, sometimes for a season, and seem little disturbed by human presence. They appear not to migrate any great distance, but will make local movements with the seasons, particularly to higher and lower ground.
22.01.2022 Grey Whistler - (Pachycephala grisieceps) (Julatten)
22.01.2022 Lewin's Honeyeater (Meliphaga lewinii) Nest. Lewin's honeyeaters breed during September to January. The nest is a large cup of vegetation and other materials, bound together with spider web and lined with soft material. The two to three oval eggs are incubated for about 14 days and the young birds leave the nest after a further 14 days. It is unclear what roles each parent performs in nest building and incubation, but both care for the young birds.
20.01.2022 Frill-necked Monarch (Arses lorealis) The range is from the top of Australia's Cape York Peninsula southwest to Weipa, and southeast as far as the Iron Range and Coen. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. The Frill-necked Monarch measures around 14 cm in length, and the neck feathers can become erect into a small frill; the male is predominantly black and white, and can be distinguished from the similar and more common pied monarch by its all-white breast-the latter species having a broad black breast band. (photographed at Iron Range)
20.01.2022 The estrildid finches are gregarious and often colonial seed eaters with short, thick, but pointed bills. They are all similar in structure and habits, but vary widely in plumage colours and patterns. Most are sensitive to cold and require warm, usually tropical, habitats.
19.01.2022 Eastern Yellow Robin - (Eopsaltria australis) - nest. Breeding takes place in the spring and, as with many Australian birds, is often communal. The nest is a neat cup made of fine plant material and spider web, usually placed in a fork, and expertly disguised with lichen, moss, bark, or leaves.
