25.01.2022 Mulka Store sold everything a drover and his family might need, from ribbons to spurs. It was created and run by George and Mabel Aiston from the 1920s through to the 50s. George, nicknamed 'Poddy' because of his big belly, was described by mailman Tom Kruse as: ... a most remarkable man and he would have been a legend no matter where he lived but it just seemed that the Birdsville Track was the most unlikely place in the world to find such an extraordinary personality. 25.01.2022 Spend a little time in the desert and this is what you'll see - beautiful sunsets and a wide, flat horizon. It's almost surreal! This was taken just north of Mungerannie. https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/desert-sunset-near-mungeran/

21.01.2022 According to Great Southern Rail, The Ghan is one of the world's greatest rail journeys. SBS has even made a TV show about it. The Ghan now runs from Adelaide through Tarcoola and then roughly follows the Stuart Highway up to Darwin. But originally, the Ghan followed explorer John MacDouall Stuart's route through Marree. In the early years, Marree was the rail head. [ 114 more words ] https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/the-ghan/
21.01.2022 Nina Betts was the lovely wife of the station manager at Mungerannie in 2007 when we travelled the Birdsville Track recording interviews. Her stories were an eye opener. In her Birdsville Track Audio Tour interview, Nina describes the difficulties of getting trades people to travel into the Outback, her attempts to work as a solicitor in Broken Hill whilst living part-time on the station, and the tragic death of her baby son from SIDS. https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/nina-betts/
21.01.2022 Lyn Rowlands was born and bred in Birdsville. In fact, she was born in a shed at the back of the old Birdsville clinic, which is now a museum. Lyn remembers the old days, when the women went down to the Billabong to collect water and wash their clothes. She washed her babies in a tarp-lined hole in the ground. 19.01.2022 Birdsville Cemetery is unusual because it lies peacefully in amongst the dunes. Drive out of Birdsville to the west towards the Simpson Desert and turn right. What's the oldest grave you can spot? https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/birdsville-cemetery/

15.01.2022 Lyall Oldfield has been dubbed 'The Mayor of Marree'. In fact, Marree doesn't have a mayor because there's no council. I think it's under the jurisdiction of the Outback Communities Authority. Marree has a progress association to take care of town business. Lyall is descended from one of the first white settlers in the area. He's quite a character, full of stories about Marree's heydey as a railway town, and the Afghan cameleers. You'll find Lyall at the Marree Outback Roadhouse, along with a meal, supplies and lots of groceries! https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/lyall-oldfield/
15.01.2022 The old Birdsville clinic is now a museum. For my first 5 years in Birdsville, this was where we went to see the Flying Doctor on his monthly visits. It was in this room that I found out I was pregnant with my son, who's now 15. Despite the excellent care provided by the nurses and the RFDS, health services were sometimes a long way away. 13.01.2022 Big Red is the tallest dune in the Simpson Desert, which is the largest sand dune desert in the world according to the Guiness Book of Records. Drivers see Big Red as a challenge. Many need several attempts to get to the top, particularly the crazy dudes who try to conquer Big Red in a two-wheel-drive car. Actually, I think we may have attempted that ourselves - in a Nissan Bluebird, which had the road clearance of an earthworm. 12.01.2022 What happened when Visit Queensland, Australia asked me to to make a of Birdsville #outbackqueensland I’m travelling to all corners of Queensland as the Commonwealth Games Baton is run across the state. CURRENT LOCATION: near LONGREACH
10.01.2022 Imagine following a 500km cattle trail over dunes and across stony gibber plains, without meeting another soul. In the 1930s, before phones and portable radios, Tom Kruse did just that. Once a month, Tom delivered supplies and mail from Marree to Birdsville, along the Birdsville Track. The Track wasn't yet a road - just a meandering thread through the wilderness - and only 10 years earlier, camels had been performing this task. 06.01.2022 Before 1974, Marree was so segregated that even the cemetery was separated into European, Afghan and Aboriginal areas. The cemetery's full of interesting grave stones. You can pick a map up from the Marree Telecentre and go and take a look. https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/marree-cemetery/
06.01.2022 "Absolutely loved your audio tour of the Birdsville Track. We listened to the whole thing as we travelled south from Birdsville a week ago and it really made our trip into a more special event. Loved the information on the early explorers and details of the locations as we travelled. This really added a lot to our trip. Very well done. Loved listening to your voice. Everything was perfect. Thanks heaps." Phil Talbot Falcon, WA https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/great-testimonial-from-phil/

01.01.2022 Who would have dreamt that Lake Harry Station used to be a date plantation! It was part of a government experiment in new commercial crops. The seedlings were planted in 1897. The date palms grew well but the planners forgot one very small - and very important - requirement... Date palms are pollinated by bees. Unfortunately, bees can't survive in the hot, dry climate of the Tirari Desert. [ 194 more words ] https://birdsvilletrack.com.au/lake-harry-station/
