24.01.2022 Here's some further information about the earlier-than-planned return to onsite learning for primary school students from the Education Minister (and Deputy Premier); James Merlino. Our hearts go out to, and our thoughts are with, our secondary school colleagues and their students and families. We look forward to the whole system clicking back into gear ASAP! https://www.facebook.com/JamesMerlinoMP/posts/1815684658607382

23.01.2022 A slow communication week from us as we continue to settle-back-in. An important reminder though; Starting tomorrow (and due to the public holiday), it's a...

22.01.2022 Dear Families, We know that the cherubs haven't even walked back through the front gates yet(!), but we are excited to let you know that we will be - in one way or another - celebrating Book Week from October 19 to October 23. The theme this year is: 'Curious Creatures. Wild Minds'. AND! We'd like to aim for a 'dress up as your favourite book character' day on Thursday, October 22.... We're trying to give you plenty of runway here, as we know accessing props may be challenging in the current environment. We would also encourage you - now more than ever - to "do no more than what you can, which might well be nothing!" (*we're trying to give the kids 'an escape', not to give you a task that you'd like to escape ). Unfortunately, due to the current restrictions parents will not be able to attend the parade at school but we are hoping to share videos and photos with you. During the week we will be sharing and celebrating the books we love. There are plenty of fun activities planned (including a book treasure hunt of some of the latest shortlisted books). We are looking forward to reconnecting our student community with this special week

22.01.2022 Classroom-style chairs featuring metal frame and moulded plastic seat. *Please note: Not all chairs are 'joinable'. There is a male and female piece on either side which can lock multiple chairs together. We have close to 50 which ARE joinable... Great for around the firepit and/or at the weekender (*we would imagine ).... Varying sizes, from adult to young child. Good structural condition. Might need a pressure wash. Reach out to us via the "Send Message" button (below) to express your interest!

22.01.2022 Hi Everyone Mrs. Johnston is after a donation of buckets for her music program!?! Yep, you heard us right...buckets! Because the kids aren't really allowed to sing or play recorders (as per the DET operations guide for term 4), naturally, she's thinking that 'bucket drumming' is something our students CAN do ... This is the kind of thing we're thinking (*see picture below). Preferably, we'd be looking for "a few of the same" (so they stack for storage). BUT! Please don't go buying anything! Really, we're just hoping to tap-into the fact that we know we've been able to stumble across families that end up with unwanted empty buckets through their work... If you are able to help... please send any bucket drums to Mrs. Johnston via your child/ren. Thanks for your consideration

20.01.2022 Since the onset of this pandemic, the health, wellbeing and safety of Birmingham Primary School students has been of paramount importance. The Victorian Chief Health Officer has recently penned a letter to reassure parents, carers and guardians of the low transmission risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) in schools. The letter also provides information about some of the risk-mitigation strategies in place at schools, as well as links to useful information and resources.... You can access the Victorian Chief Health Officer's letter here: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/chief-health-officer-mes

20.01.2022 Dear Families Just a reminder that tomorrow’s remote learning day (Wednesday, September 16) will once again be run entirely by the specialist teachers, so tomorrow is the day to 'Go Super-Fun-Specialist-Week Nuts (Again)'! Please be aware that, on Wednesday, September 16, your child’s classroom teacher will NOT be:... 1 opening any classroom meets*, or 2 setting any learning tasks on learning grids, slides, classroom (etc). *Specialist Staff will be opening classroom meets at the scheduled times for Grades 2-6 on Wednesday, September 16. No meets for Prep & Grade 1 on Wednesday, September 16 Further information will be provided via a detailed Compass post at some stage today

19.01.2022 Slightly more school-specific information contained here (from our Minister for Education)...

17.01.2022 Birmingham P.S. is currently storing 10 Targus top-load laptop bags for no particular purpose!?! So... we're getting rid of them! All are used but in very good condition. *First-in, best-dressed!... **Pick-up only ***Cash or EFT on Pick-up See more

16.01.2022 We are just a little bit excited about this We will have details for all of our 2021 Prep families as soon as we've had a chance to apply the appropriate tweaks to our always highly regarded Prep transition program. Stay tuned

15.01.2022 Dear Families, We hope that your family enjoyed the return to school this week. Your calm and positive contribution was critical, and - as always - was greatly appreciated The staggered drop-off and pick-up arrangements became more efficient every day, and certainly assisted us to reduce the amount of time that adults are gathering at the school gates. With a view towards continued improvment across the next week, we ask that you consider the following:... 1 If you are regularly getting out of your car to drop-off or pick-up your child, we ask that you consider making plans with your children to drop-off or pick-up from the angled-parking section of the carpark which regularly has spaces available, 2 If you are in the flow of traffic, we ask that you allow parked vehicles to exit their park and also enter the flow of traffic so that the park can be used again. Besides, it is likely that the vehicle you 'let-in' has already dropped-off or picked-up their children and will not affect your place in the line! 3 a fairly large number of children are entering or exiting their vehicle from the driver side where there are moving vehicles. We would much prefer to see them using the passenger side! 4 Please also remember that the designated drop-off and pick-up space is AFTER you have passed the speed-bump, because our traffic control staff can safely start and stop traffic if-and-when needed. And - in an oversight from previous communications - please also bear in mind that walking to school is a great way not only to get some fitness work into your day, but it keeps you out of the traffic ENTIRELY! We hope that you've had a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone again tomorrow morning

15.01.2022 It has been a challenging week for social media platforms. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has been active in contacting the major social media companies on behalf of schools, families and individuals, and they continue to work closely with those social media companies to get one video in particular removed expeditiously and to prevent further uploads and sharing. Read more about the issue (including timely advice and resources), as well as about the Office of the eSafety Commissioner more broadly, here:

15.01.2022 Following 23 consecutive days of no new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths, further changes to Victorian COVID-19 restrictions have been announced. See the Premier's Facebook announcement via the attached post. Today's announcement does not provide explicit directions for schools, although there are potentially positive knock-ons for Birmingham Primary School owing to some of the changes included in the "Last Step Summary of Changes" document contained at the bottom of... this page: https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/statement-premier-82 Birmingham families have made an incredible contribution towards achieving the fragile balance that our local community, along with the rest of the state, has managed to achieve. But we need to continue to play our part. We encourage our community to sensibly enjoy each new freedom; we've all worked hard for the privilege! And rest assured that we will continue to invest significant time and effort into working out what 'Covid-normal' is allowed to look like at each step along the Government's pathway. Whilst we are quickly running out of runway between now and the end of the school year, we are hoping to be able to get back towards some aspects of 'pre-covid normal' so that we can get a sneak peak of what 2021 might look like (when that time comes!)

14.01.2022 We've got a detailed Compass newsfeed coming and plenty more to follow. But here's the time-critical stuff in a nutshell (to help you get ready for life... as you used to know it ):

13.01.2022 Following advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer, the Victorian Government has released a staged approach for students to return to on-site schooling. The purpose of the plan is to get students back in the classroom as soon and as safely as possible without putting at risk all that has been achieved through the period of restrictions to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). After a day of exhaustive fine-tuning, we look forward to sharing our arrangements with yo...u (starting tomorrow!). Stay tuned

13.01.2022 BOOKFAIR final week! Calling all book worms! This Friday 20th November our Bookfair comes to a close. Are you still looking for Christmas gift ideas? Our shelves have been restocked. Why not purchase a book and support our school library at the same time!?... Click on the link below to browse the full range of books. The link also shows backorder items (these must be paid for in advance and will be available for collection in the week ending 27th November). https://docs.google.com//2PACX-1vQK-4htJ1rIkbTERtn/pubhtml# The Bookfair is still open at recess and lunch play every day this week. Payments can be made via cash (in the library) or online via the Scholastic website: https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/BookFairs (don’t forget your Wishlist with receipt number). *Unfortunately parents cannot come through, so - if your child/ren will be shopping 'onsite' - please chat with them to make sure that they are prepared

13.01.2022 Hi All Please see Trish's final address for Term 3. Take care. Stay safe and well. And we look forward to seeing you all during Term 4

10.01.2022 Back by popular demand... the last week of term will be our 'Specialist Super-Fun Week ENCORE!'. Full details will be posted in your child's class stream in the coming days. On offer will be a handful of exciting new, and a bunch of favourite old, activities for students to complete alone, or together with their family.... Which activities will you choose THIS time around?

09.01.2022 Some really exciting news from Victoria's Premier earlier this afternoon See the attached post to see the all-encompassing and official version, and for the key changes to 'life-in-general' for metropolitan Melbournians. The Birmingham P.S.-specific summary would include that ALL of our students (that's right, ALL the way from Prep-to-Grade Six!) will begin a gradual return to the classroom from Term 4, Week 2 (Monday 12 October). Given that we've "been here and done th...is" before, you can absolutely expect that the return to school for all of our students and families will look and feel much the same as it did towards the end of Lockdown-1. However, we will take the next two weeks to make sure that we've got all of our i's dotted and t's crossed, and we'll keep you updated via Compass as our processes are locked-in. For now though... continue to enjoy your holidays! They are truly well-earned https://www.facebook.com/DanielAndrewsMP/posts/3460840917313753

09.01.2022 The Victorian Government announced that Victoria moved to the Last Step of the roadmap for reopening from 11:59pm, Sunday 22 November 2020. As a result of the changes announced, a large number of important updates have been made by the Department of Education to school operations. It is important to note that, for a variety of reasons, what those changes look like from school-to-school might vary significantly.

08.01.2022 Despite our grounds coping exceptionally well with recent weather events, a subsequent arborist report did identify a couple of trees inside our boundaries that needed to come down based on observations of the early signs of disease or that the tree was nearing the end of it's natural life. As such, there is a small amount of firewood available at the front of the school. #FirstInBestDressed

07.01.2022 We're also just a little bit excited about this - most particularly the bit located in paragraphs 4-and-5 about Grade 6 graduation ceremonies. Once again, it'll need to involve VERY different execution compared to what we have traditionally done, so it's going to take us a little bit of time to re-imagine it. But we will let our Grade 6 families know everything that they need to know... as soon as we know!

07.01.2022 Whilst this announcement doesn't affect Birmingham Primary School directly, there'll be plenty of our families who this will affect...

07.01.2022 So, clearly some of us have to start casting-an-eye to 2021... And one particular room which has "supported broader efforts to make our other learning spaces light, bright and airy" (read: it's full of 'stuff' ) needs to be cleared out! In the absence of our ability to hold an 'all-in' garage sale... we're going to try to find some of that stuff a new home via our Facebook page ... Stay tuned. You never know what we might put up next!?! And reach out if you see anything you're interested in.

06.01.2022 From us to you: It's (very nearly) 2:30 on the final day of Term 3, 2020. That deserves a fist-pump

06.01.2022 Our environmental garden is singing Some of our senior onsite students completed a frog census in our environmental garden last week and logged their results through the Melbourne Water app. Under the guidance of Ms. Buckland, they thought they’d heard (and captured the sounds of) a Southern Brown frog. But we now know, via the app's 'confirmed entry', that what they heard was an Eastern Common Froglet

04.01.2022 On Friday October 30, Birmingham Primary School joins the rest of Australia ( and the rest of the world, we suspect ) in celebrating World Teachers' Day, to recognise the outstanding work and dedication of all teachers. For us, it is a timely opportunity to reflect on the incredible challenges our teachers have overcome (and continue to overcome) to ensure that all Birmingham students have the support they need to continue learning. We encourage our families also, to take the opportunity to reach out to their child/ren's teacher/s with a kind word, or a short note or e-mail of thanks. It would be a powerful way to recognise the incredible contribution our teachers have made in 2020...
