21.01.2022 PICNICS AT THE FALLS A History of the Lal Lal Racecourse and its Railway Mark Cauchi and Michael Guiney... The New Year’s Day races at the Lal Lal Falls Racecourse was for many years one of the most popular holiday events in the colony of Victoria. The picturesque falls nearby was the natural attraction and the race meeting at its peak during the late 1880s, drew in excess of 30,000 holiday-makers to this scenic and remote location. There was no other activity that found such a universal attraction horse racing was indeed a community affair and it played an important role in bringing people together, especially in rural areas. The local races became a meeting place where friends and family could share a day out and so public holidays became synonymous with key picnic race meetings. The annual New Year’s Day meeting at Lal Lal Falls was a typical Australian holiday festival happily combining these national tastes for racing and picnicking. Built as part of the famous Railway Construction Act of 1884, the branch line railway that served this racecourse was at one stage said to be the most profitable in the colony. This is the story of how a fledgling race meeting became the Melbourne Cup of the country and the role the railway played in its popularity and success. It is also the story of how the racing club committee took their success and well-deserved reputation for granted which, when challenged by rival attractions, resulted in the gradual decline and demise of the racing club, their annual race meeting and the branch railway. Picnics at the Falls is the second in a series of new railway histories from Mark Cauchi and Michael Guiney combining serious railway research and relevant social and local history. It is a superbly written, definitive history of the Lal Lal Falls, the racecourse, and its branch line railway. The book, professionally designed, contains 88 pages of intensively-researched history printed on 150 gsm Satin art paper and includes 64 black and white photos and diagrams. The full-coloured cover is printed on 300 gsm satin stock, with a gloss cello sheen laminate. Copies of the book are available directly from the authors at the price of $48.00 plus $10.00 handling and shipping to locations within Australia. To purchase multiple copies, please enquire for a specific shipping price. 19.01.2022 Just a few places left for the 1930 vintage train to Birregurra this Saturday 29 July and a wonderful roast Christmas in July lunch.

17.01.2022 We regret that the usually very reliable old 1930 vintage Diesel Electric Rail Motor that we had hired to bring passengers to Birregurra Station for a Christmas in July Lunch on Saturday and then provide some short trips for local passengers from Colac and Birregurra, experienced electrical problems on the way and failed to get further than Moriac. Once it could be moved safely to the old platform at Moriac, the passengers were transferred to a road coach for the short trip t...o Birregurra where their great Christmas Lunch was waiting. The DERM had to be towed back to its base at Newport to hopefully be promptly repaired. We had to cancel the two short trips for local passengers and rang all booked to advise them of the situation, although by the time that had occurred, it was close to the departure time at Colac. We understand that many would have been disappointed and inconvenienced. We were also disappointed that despite many volunteers working hard to plan and deliver the events, the rail motor failure detracted from the day. Please accept our apology. See more

09.01.2022 Take a step back in time and experience the eeriness of the Birregurra Railway Station after dark. Will your hairs stand on end as you walk along the platform a...nd through the unmanned station, built in 1877? This venue makes a perfect backdrop for an evening of crime, scandal and lies as we stoke up the fires and celebrate Christmas in July. It is the role of the guests to decipher the means, motive and opportunity by first figuring out who are actors and questioning their role in the plot. What's Included? - Professionally paired wines with a gourmet three-course dinner in a historical mansion - Watch and participate in the dramatic events that unfold around you. - Tie together evidence with secrets and gossip that the characters tell. Can you solve the crime?

07.01.2022 Birre Station hosted a meeting of the Geelong District Historical Association on Saturday 10th and enjoyed a great warm fire in the office while we met, despite some low life stealing most of the great firewood that several had spent hours cutting up and stacking away for such events.
