24.01.2022 Such a precious moment. One which you never forget.

22.01.2022 STREAM NOW! Having won over 22 international awards, Birth Time: the documentary is now available to stream right here, anywhere, anytime. Exploring what it wou...ld take for women to emerge from their births feeling innately powerful, physically well, and emotionally safe. It’s time for women’s needs at birth to be heard. #ItsTime

18.01.2022 When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called fetal-maternal microchimerism. For... 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too. Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream. Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart. The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby. How cool is that? This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant. It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive. Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave? Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that? - @kelsiludvigsen If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there.Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them. I hope this warms all the mama hearts out there as I find this to be so very beautiful. Sammie McClure-Nolan

17.01.2022 Are you considering giving birth in the water? Water births are becoming more and more common these days and for good reason. According to Evidence Based Birth,... water births come with several benefits when compared to traditional land births. Here is a summary of some of the benefits to the mother: If you have given birth in the water, we’d love to hear how you felt about the experience. Would you do it again? Would you recommend a water birth to other mamas? Or, maybe you have never done a water birth, but you are planning to. If so, why did you decide to go with a water birth? Benefits of Waterbirth: - Increased rate of spontaneous vaginal birth without medical interventions such as vacuum or forceps. In other words, a much higher rate of women who labor in water give birth vaginally without interventions. - Significantly decreased rate of episiotomies. Water birth is protective against episiotomies. - Decreased risk of severe perineal tearing - Decreased pain during labor and birth - Shorter labor - Much higher rates of hands-off deliveries - Less pain during birth - Significantly higher satisfaction with birth experience - Less likely to transfer to a hospital if doing a home birth or birth clinic birth - Does not increase rate of maternal infection (not necessarily a benefit, but important to know) - Possibly lower rates of postpartum hemorrhage (more studies are needed, but current studies suggest this is the case) Photo Credit: Raleigh Birth Photography, Mother: Emerald Rice You can read more details about the studies related to this information at Evidence Based Birth (https://evidencebasedbirth.com/waterbirth/)

05.01.2022 It’s homebirth awareness week so thought it only fitting that I share this photo of the moment we met our youngest bubba very recently. Born beautifully at home. That moment of sheer ecstasy, of relief, of wonder at my own body, the moment I came back to the present moment, the physical world. That moment we first laid eyes on him. A moment I will never forget. We worked hard for this moment. This was our third birth, we had done a lot of preparation. I talked to my baby the... whole way. We dedicated time educating ourselves and our older children about birth and what to expect. We built our birth team. Birthing at home meant I felt empowered, in control, loved, fully supported and safe. It became a family affair. And we did everything OUR way and in our own timing. It also meant afterwards I could get into MY shower, eat real food and sleep in MY bed without having to wait to be discharged which was really fricken awesome! Big huge shout out to our wonderful homebirth midwife @midwifelibbylamb and beautiful doula @ayana_surya #homebirth #homebirthawarenessweek #homebirthmidwife #doula #itstime #birthtime #safesupportedbirth #empoweredbirth #thisisbirth #birthjusthappened See more

01.01.2022 If you want a normal/physiological birth with minimal intervention you know where to go the further away you move from the hospital system the greater your chance of a normal birth. This was found to be true in this Australian study (maternal and perinatal outcomes by planned place of birth in Australia) and also in a study in the UK (The birthplace in England study. If you Google both of these they are open access. Not only are you chances of a normal birth nearly 6 x highe...r than if you give birth in hospital, but the outcomes are equivalent. So, the home setting offers the same level of physical safety than hospital, but with a significant reduction in the use of intervention in order to achieve the same outcome. In this study, the authors state that ‘there were no statistically significant differences in the proportion of intrapartum stillbirths, early or late neonatal deaths between the three planned places of birth’. So, if you want to increase the chances of a normal birth, follow the science, use the research and choose a place that will give you the opportunity. The link to the study is in my bio. #homebirthawarenessweek2021 #homebirthawarenessweek #science #evidence #evidencebased #homebirth #privatemidwife See more
