23.01.2022 Many women are aware that medical interventions during birth have benefits and risks - just like any drug or procedure used within medicine. But fewer women are told of the implications of common procedures such as the use of morphine, epidurals or caesareans on breastfeeding. It's not about saying 'don't have a caesarean'... it's about understanding that establishing breastfeeding might be more challenging after a caesarean (still totally possible but maybe just a bit more d...ifficult). Knowing this (and having support available) could prevent some stress and heartache in this new, challenging and uncertain time in a woman's life. This is something that I am very passionate about because there are too many women out there who feel like they've failed their baby when in reality the interventions and medicine have failed them and their baby!! You can also attend a local Australian Breastfeeding Association get-together to learn more. They always welcome visitors! Skin to skin contact with hour baby directly after their birth stimulates oxytocin - an essential hormone in breastfeeding. Some hospitals run education sessions at the hospit...al on the ward that you can attend before coming home with baby. Many public maternity hospitals have lactation consultants that you can see for free You can hire a private Lactation Consultant to come to your home I highly recommend getting a few insulated water bottles to leave around the house so you can stay hydrated while breastfeeding Think about some healthy snacks that can be eaten one-handed that can sustain you during a big feeding session See more
