24.01.2022 So many of you said a daytime screening would be better, so I made one. Film: Birth Time: the documentary Date: Wed 31st Mar 2021 at 10:00 am... Where: Hoyts Woden Westfield Woden, 8 Bradley St, Phillip, Australian Capital Territory, 2606, Australia https://tickets.demand.film/event/10533 See you there xx
23.01.2022 I have never been so proud to be a Birth Becomes YOU certified birth photographer. The amount of hate being thrown around is astonishing. Acknowledging that birthing people don't always identify as women doesn't take birth away from women. Inclusion, not exclusion. (Please leave any transphobic comments for your own page. They'll be removed from mine.) xx Amey... #HateFreeZone

20.01.2022 Recently I was asked to speak to a care provider outside the birth space. They wanted me to stop interfering with my client's care. The interference? Reminding my client that she had the option to decline a vaginal exam (as per her birth plan). Consent matters. The End.
20.01.2022 Thanks Lorena the Doula for a great graphic! Anything else you would add for your birth space?
19.01.2022 This amazing human is raising money for an equally amazing charity. There's no way I'd have the guts to do what she's going to do - but I'm excited to help her reach her fundraising goal. For every birth package booked in the next 10 months, I'll donate $100 to Jessica for RizeUp. Domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness among children in Australia. RizeUp is a vital part of the service system across Australia and provides fast, flexible sol...utions to women and children in desperate situations. If you'd like to support Jess directly, please go to https://rizeupfundraiser.raisely.com
18.01.2022 ANOTHER UPDATE - Our new OB is Dr Sergio Stefanelli UPDATE - A new Ob from NZ is seeing some patients for homebirth reviews. I'll report more when I know more :) Did you know there are currently no obstetricians at TCH willing to meet with or sign off on women in the homebirth program? Sign off is an eligibility requirement. This is the ultimate illusion of choice. Not good enough Centenary Hospital for Women and Children. Shame on our obstetricians pushing personal agendas instead of supporting government approved choices.
18.01.2022 At Canberra Health Services we understand your wish to visit your loved ones or accompany them to the hospital. A reminder that in response to the changing cir...cumstances with COVID-19, health facilities in the ACT continue to have visitor restrictions in place. General visiting is limited to one visitor per patient allowed on site per day. Women attending pregnancy check-ups in Canberra’s hospitals can be accompanied by a support person. We’d like to remind everyone that if you’re unwell, or have recently been overseas, or to Victoria, Greater Sydney, and COVID-19 affected areas in Queensland, please do not come to visit loved ones. We also encourage visitors to our public hospitals to contact their loved ones by calling them directly, and wherever possible do not bring children with you. You will need to fill in the screening tool on the ACT Health App as you enter the facility. We appreciate your support and please remember to be kind and respectful to our staff as they continue to keep our community safe. See the Queensland Government and NSW Health websites for the latest information on COVID-19 hotspots.
16.01.2022 Can you believe that in Brazil, 55% of all births in the public system and 84% in private hospitals are caesarean sections. Up to 65% of birthing women have a hormone drip, 66% have their waters artificially ruptured and 85% have episiotomies. When I had the chance to support a gorgeous Brazilian couple with dreams of a low intervention birth, it lit a fire in my belly. We need empowered, ecstatic birth stories to change the way we birth here and everywhere. ... WELCOMING LUCCA After 20 years together and living almost all of their lives in Brazil, Michelle and Luiz made plans to welcome their first baby here in Canberra. Michelle is consciously connected with her body. She quite literally dances through life with the biggest smile and relished every moment of her pregnancy. I knew given the opportunity she would birth beautifully. We spoke often of the importance of movement, love and security in birth, and with Luiz by her side this was always going to be in abundance. The day of their baby’s birth, Michelle’s waters broke at 6pm and there were a few nervous giggles over WhatsApp about what might happen next (and the realisation that the waters would just keep coming until birth). The waves of labour started soon after, and Michelle predicted her baby would be coming quickly. By the time I spoke to Michelle and Luiz again at 8.30pm, they were heading to hospital and it was time for me to join them. On arrival I helped to set up Michelle’s birth space and reminded her of how she wanted to feel when she welcomed her baby. Softly lit by candlelight and with the faint scent of lavender in the air, Michelle moved into the bath and swayed to her mix of Enya, Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson keeping close contact with Luiz and vocally encouraging her baby to make his way down and out. Positive affirmations were all this goddess needed to work through the intensity of labour. Michelle went with her body as she got the urge to bear down, and baby Lucca was born at 11.09pm just 5 hours after Michelle’s first signs of labour. Sophie was everything you could hope for in a midwife. She asked what Michelle’s plans were and helped her and Luiz to achieve their goal of quiet, respectful and natural birth. Her ability to form an instant connection and her obvious love of birth made everyone feel safe and relaxed. After Lucca was born, Sophie supported Michelle in the bath until after she had birthed her placenta and was ready to hop out. Baby Lucca’s cord was cut over an hour after birth which is so rare in a hospital environment. Michelle had no tearing, minimal bleeding, and was smiling from ear to ear as Lucca had his first feed. It was such a privilege to hold space while Michelle roared her baby into being. Being able to capture Luiz’s tears of joy, Michelle’s transition from maiden to mother and Lucca’s first breaths was such an incredible honour. Você é tão amado!

14.01.2022 5 month old Charlie the cavoodle had a pretty crap start to life, but his owners did one positive thing - they gave him up rather than continuing the neglect. 7 hours in the car later for us and he's here. Snuggled up and warm on the couch with his new family. He's a hairy skeleton for now, but watch this space. PS - dogs are so intuitive. Piper can tell this one is fragile and she's giving him space and being so calm. Totally not my boisterous cavoodle! #feedsleepplayrepeat... #snowymountainsanimalrescueteam #oodlesoflove See more

12.01.2022 Karen Schlage knows how devastating it is to lose a baby. She and her husband Daniel lost their son Charlie at 15 weeks and 3 days’ gestation in October 2018, a...nd their daughter Sophia at 16 weeks and 6 days’ gestation in July 2019. ‘When we lost our babies, we did not just lose their 15 or 16 weeks of being. We lost everything we had seen stretching before us. We lost our very loved son and daughter. We lost babies who mattered.’ Karen says the most fundamental impact of the announcement today that a new Early Pregnancy Unit will be added to the $50 million Centenary Hospital for Women & Children Expansion Project is that people care. ‘Everyone involved in this decision are saying that all these babies matter,’ she says. The Unit will be a dedicated facility to support women and families experiencing pregnancy loss at less than 20 weeks’ gestation, offering medical, emotional and psychosocial support in a purpose-built space. Karen (pictured at left) has worked closely in recent weeks with CHS’s Executive Director, Women, Youth and Children Tina Bracher (right), senior clinical staff and the Project design team at CHS to plan the new Early Pregnancy Unit. Adjacent to the antenatal ward, it will offer a therapeutic and healing environment and will be staffed by a skilled, multidisciplinary team. Karen says the new Unit will mean that women will no longer have to miscarry in an Emergency Department or at home because they don’t know where else to go. It will also mean that women will no longer need to be accommodated on wards that are not suitable for their experience of loss, or are not suitable for labour and delivery. ‘To the women and families who will use this facility I am so, so sorry that you will need to. But I am so grateful that you will be able to.’
08.01.2022 The forceful breastfeeding techniques, the time constraints, the hospital system doesn’t like to accept the idea that what they’re doing may not be in the best... interests of mothers and babies. Dr Robyn Thompson - author, midwife, educator & founder of ‘The Thompson Method’. My research clearly demonstrates that the first breastfeed is critical for both mother and baby, in relation to breastfeeding complications. I call this time the 3 Golden Hours. Anything that intervenes, interrupts or delays those Golden Hours increases the risk of painful nipple trauma, which damages the physical and emotional wellbeing of the mother and her baby. For many women, complications are avoidable. In this video, Dr Robyn Thompson talks through three unnecessary interrupts and how to avoid them. You’ll also hear from some of the mothers who have worked with Dr Robyn and their experiences breastfeeding. If you are approaching your estimated due date and will be giving birth in hospital AND you want to breastfeed then check out the Thompson Method Breastfeeding Program. The Thompson Method Online Breastfeeding Program provides all the education women need to empower themselves to make informed decisions about their labor, birth, and breastfeeding Doors are NOW open >> bit.ly/TTM_BFOffer Please note: The intention of this video is to share information with women about to embark on their unique labour, birth and breastfeeding journey. There is no intention to offend any woman who does not breastfeed or has not breastfed or who feeds (or has fed) her baby formula. Nor is there any intention to offend or upset any women who has experienced an induction of labour. As information in this video may deal with health, midwifery and medical related issues, please visit our website to read the medical disclaimer. Dr Robyn Thompson
