18.01.2022 A healthy baby is NOT the ONLY thing that matters. You are NOT one feeling or one emotion. You are a complex human being who is allowed to have more needs than ...just staying alive, and more desires than having a healthy baby. The systematic dismissal of women and the importance of their experiences, and disregard for their comprehensive health is, perhaps, the ultimate driving force behind my purpose as a doula and educator. The A healthy baby is all that matters platitude is damaging and further perpetuates this disregard and dismissal of women. First of all, I have *never* met a parent who wouldn’t do anything necessary for the health of their baby, if recommended by a provider they *trust*. The healthiest mom and baby possible is the bottom line. But. OTHER THINGS MATTER TOO. Acknowledging that trust, autonomy, respect, being heard, and even hopes and dreams MATTER does NOT detract from one’s gratitude for their baby. Second, these needs can be met *regardless* of mode of delivery or birth preferences obtained/not obtained. When these comprehensive needs are met, many kinds of birth experiences can be positive. Third. Some babies are not born healthy. How a mother is treated its *always* important. Following the logic of a healthy baby is all that matters, then what matters when a baby is not healthy? Regardless of preferences, circumstances, controllables, and uncontrollablesHow a mother feels during and about her birth experience affects her mental health, physical health, and bonding with her baby. That matters. I regard this hierarchy of needs as imperfect and a work in progress! Please share anything you feel could be added. #positivebirth #positivecesarean #unmedicatedbirth #epiduralbirth #birthrightsarehumanrights #birthdoulas #ahealthybabyisnotallthatmatters #listentowomen #ipreview via @preview.app
11.01.2022 Syringe feeding or ‘finger feeds’ are a great way to give babies extra expressed breast milk if needed. This is usually a temporary solution if: - The nursing ...parent is away e.g. surgery - Baby is having trouble latching - The nursing parent's nipples are too sore/ damaged - Weight loss is greater than expected and there needs to be supplementation of extra breast milk or even formula. There should be a delay in introducing bottles, during the beginning stages of nursing, to prevent nipple confusion and the disruption of the natural sucking motion. This method is not a long term solution, but is a great help when circumstances call for a little extra nourishment. Other methods of supplementing include: - cup feeding using a small, soft plastic container; - Small plastic teaspoon, - side-line with a feeding tube beside the nipple and the other end in a bottle
11.01.2022 Happy Holidays lovely friends. I hope you have a wonderful few days (weeks if you’re lucky) off. Be safe and see you in the new year!
09.01.2022 Nausea in pregnancy fave tricks Some recent research showed some not exactly surprising news - sniffing an alcohol swab is actually more effective for acute n...ausea than IV Zofran (big gun nausea medicine). This has always been a favorite trick of mine - right in that moment when you see their face blanch white, hand them an open alcohol swab & watch them calm right down. The absolute most important thing is to keep something in your stomach at all times. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to put something in your mouth at least every 2 hours. It doesn’t have to be a lot and it doesn’t have to be the most healthy (you have 9 more months to eat kale - if the only think you can stomach is potato chips & soda, eat potato chips & soda). Peppermint essential oil also works great for sniffing - if you’re vomiting into the toilet, shake a few drops into the toilet bowl so you have something better to smell. Carry it around in your bag for stuffy subway cars or swervy cab rides. Vit B6 & doxylamine before bed will make you sleepy, but it will also prevent nausea the next day. You can get this prescribed as diclegis or take the ingredients separately as bought over the counter. Ginger, of course, as tea, candy, cookie, powdered in a capsule, or even just munching right on the root, is excellent. Some herbs work by stimulating appetite and some by stimulating digestion, keeping things moving in a downward (rather than upward) direction, such as milk thistle tea and anise & fennel tea. Acupuncture, of course, is magical for nausea. What are your favorite tricks??? #nauseaandvomiting #nvp #morningsickness #pregnancy #earlypregnancy #earlypregnancysymptoms #midwifery #herbalmedicine #herbs See more

07.01.2022 Hi lovelies, Happy New Year! I’ve had to make a difficult decision this year. Due to studying full time I’ve decided not to attend Birth’s this year. As always I am more than happy to assist and talk through birth plans and offer support in any way I can. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes. Claire
