25.01.2022 After a successful VBAC. This smile says it all. What a champion mama
24.01.2022 Huge congratulations to this beautiful family. This video is amazing!
24.01.2022 What a great post from @birth_ed . Lets jump on an imaginary & nip to Paris! In France babies are ‘ALWAYS EARLY’.. Take your current EDD, add 7 days. THIS is your ‘french’ due date! . The physiology of French women is no different, & actually the management of a 42 week pregnancy isn’t much different either. But having due date a week later would certainly have an impact on our expectations! If we start feeling stressed & anxious at 40+1 our body is going to produce Adren...alin, inadvertently sending a message to our baby that says ‘FIRE! DINOSAURS! DANGER! NOW IS A BAD TIME TO BE BORN!’ & we wont go into labour! . In the UK we base our calculations of due dates on Naegele’s Rule- to find your EDD you count forward 40 weeks from the first day of your last period. (So for the first 2 weeks of pregnancy, you aren’t pregnant at all!) . In 1744 a doctor explained how to calculate a woman’s due date based on the records of 100 women.. he said we should +7 days to the last period & then +9 months. However, he never stated whether we should +7 days to the first day of the last period or the last! In 1812 Naegele added some thoughts of his own & created Naegele’s Rule, again not stating which day of your period this time should be + to. Until around 100 years ago, it was + to the last day of your period, but for some reason it’s now the first! We've potentially lost a week in the turn of a century! . Current research has shown that a scan at 11-14 weeks of pregnancy is more accurate than the above rule when estimating your EDD but it’s certainly not fool proof. & since only 4% of babies are actually born ON their due dates, you can take that as a pretty strong indication that for 96% of us, that date we have etched in our mind probably won’t be our baby’s birthday! . In 2001 a study into the pregnancies of 1514 women showed that for first time mums 50% had given birth by 40+5 (Meaning 50% were still pregnant at this point) & for subsequent births 50% had given birth by 40+3. 75% of first time mums had given birth by 41+2 and second time mums by 41 weeks. So better to think of it as a window! 37-42ish weeks! How far along were you when your baby arrived? See more
24.01.2022 How good are mama friends?! . . We've all heard how it takes a village to raise a child.. And it sure does! We CAN do this alone but we DON'T HAVE TO or WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO be doing this alone. Gathering your village, your tribe is essential what comes to your wellbeing as a mother and who would know better than a fellow mama? .... . Find your people and love them hard. Let them come close and allow yourself to feel all the feels. Let go. Be open, soft, vulnerable whatever it is you need in that moment. They will be there, they will find the exact words you need to hear or then sometimes there's simply no words needed, just a listening ear and a warm hug. . . #motherhood #mumlife #rawmotherhood #bohomama #earthmama #mamarising #motherhoodrising #raisingboys #birthdoula #doulalife #goldcoastdoula #doula #myvillage #mytribe #mypeople See more

21.01.2022 I finally had a chance to finish @themidwivescauldron podcast episode on cervical anterior lip and pushing. Wow, mind blowing! Too often women are being told to stop listening their bodies and stop pushing for various reasons (eg anterior lip, cervix not fully dilated). It's important to understand the pushing or bearing down sensation doesn't go away by telling women to stop. It does not need to go away! Mamas, trust your bodies and push when your body is telling you to do s...o. I supported a birth a while back where the mum was feeling 'pushy' and the midwife told her that "in general they like to wait for an hour" before they LET her push. "I NEED to push" the mother said and the midwife said how she is going to go and check with the doctors?! Like the doctors would know when SHE can push her baby out. The midwife came back and said 'yes we would need you to wait' and what the mother did was she claimed her birth, her body and baby and birthed her baby soon after. This is one of the highlights of my Doula career and she is feeling proud she went against the care provider and "recommendentations' and trusted her body. Mama, your body knows how to grow AND birth your baby. Below is reposted from @midwifethinking, can highly recommend this podcast episode and blog post. --- I've updated my 'top post' on the MidwifeThinking Blog - 'The Anterior Cervical Lip: how to ruin a perfectly good birth'. . . Read the full blog post and admire the new pictures on MidwifeThinking (link to blog in bio). . . EXCERPT: I am yet to find any evidence that pushing on an unopened cervix will cause damage. I have been told many times that it will, but have never actually seen it happen. Borrelli et al. (2013) found no cervical lacerations, 3rd degree tears, postpartum haemorrhages in the women with an EPU. A recent review of the available research (Tsao 2015) concluded: ‘Pushing with the early urge before full dilation did not seem to increase the risk of cervical edema or any other adverse maternal or neonatal outcomes’. . . #midwifethinking #rachelreed #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #studentmidwife #childbirtheducation #childbirth
20.01.2022 Optimal cord clamping: #Repost @vintagedoula "We know so little. First it was 30 seconds, now ACOG recommends (gasp) 60 seconds, but studies show 5 minutes can change brain development. ... Now imagine if we actually just left it alone and allowed 5 minutes to turn into and indeterminate amount of time decided not by our egos or policies but only by the anatomy of the cord. What if we only clamped the cord once all the blood and stem cells transfused from the placenta to the baby, as is the position of most midwives, and is definable when the cord turns white, cold and limp, and the arteries and veins truly shut down... Here's a great link to help understand the benefits of optimal cord clamping: https://www.lamaze.org//common-objections-to-delayed-cord- Via Kona Birth & Midwifery Services Photo cred: @kindnessgirl #doula #optimalcordclamping #birth #igavebirth #birthandbeyond #goldcoastdoula #goldcoastdoulas #iamadoula #pregnancy #childbirth #umbilicalcord #birthwithoutfear #familycenteredbirth #newbaby #fourthtrimester

16.01.2022 Big news! 7 years after launching Birthing from the Heart it is time for me to begin a new chapter. I have been studying part time for 3 and a half years but it is now time to begin my midwifery placement which is a huge exciting step on my path to becoming a midwife. I am so grateful to all the amazing families I have had the pleasure of supporting over my years as a doula and I want to thank you all so much for your love and support. Because of this amazing business my love... of birth and working with birthing women and their families has continued to grow. I am super excited to announce that Birthing from the Heart will also be continuing to grow as an amazing doula named Laura will be taking over the business and will be here to provide doula services to the families of the Gold Coast and surrounds. She will be jumping on to introduce herself very soon and I cannot wait for you all to meet her. So much love, Steph See more
16.01.2022 Birthing world has been looking forward to this Birth Time documentary for months now and yess, its FINALLY here! It's time to say no and reclaim what belongs to us. Our highly medicalised maternity system has to change! It's time for change. I invite everyone to join me for the screening next Wednesday at 630pm in Robina. It's time.
16.01.2022 "I walked into this believing I had control, that I could have this plan and could adjust it with a scratch of a pen. Now you’re here and the only word I can utter is Surrender. Surrender to the feedings that hurt and we sometimes both cry through.... Surrender to the waves of intense sadness and euphoria that shift inside a single moment. Surrender to the overwhelming urge to never lay you down because I’d miss you. Surrender also to the need to just lay quietly alone. Surrender to reality that the plan I had didn’t play out. Surrender because it’s SO MUCH more. I may only be able to see this hour by hour but my baby, I’m surrendering it all to you." 15.01.2022 Hi beautiful people, it's Laura here I still haven't written an official post of me purchasing this business and changing my business name... So let's make it official! YESSSS I purchased a business and YESSSS I now run my business under @birthingfromtheheart name. I'm a huge believer in karma and connection and I believe this is all happening for a reason. A few words of myself:... Juggling this crazy beautiful journey called motherhood. Mama of 6yo and 19mo boys. Could not imagine doing life without them! A birth nerd who could talk all things pregnancy, birth and motherhood for days. I believe every woman should know their options what comes to pregnancy and childbirth. Evidence based information is available and everyone should be able to make their own informed decisions after getting know to all their options, and their pros and cons. Favourite birth term is a "Birth Narnia", something I heard a while back and I think it describes birth so perfectly. When in labour we turn in, cocoon into our bodies and escape in our own world focusing only on our body and baby, by shutting out the outside world. One of my top tips for new expectant parents/mamas would be to consider getting their birth photographed/videoed. It's magical! Can highly recommend my dear friend and gmfellow mama @lalunabirthcollective. Current read is Sarah Buckley's gentle birth gentle mothering. I absolutely love this book and I'm reading it for my second time now. This is a book that should totally be on every new parents reading list. To me the most challenging thing as a mama of two is to be able to find one on one time with my first born son. There hasn't been much mom-son quality time other than occasional nap time play for the last nine months now. This is something I'm feeling guilty about and I'm trying to pay attention to. Lover of yoga, pilates, op-shops and being creative. My community, like minded people and new connections really light the sparkle within me. #doula #birthdoula #pregnancy #childbirth #motherhood #womanhood #empoweringwomen #birthandbeyond #goldcoastdoula #goldcoastdoulas #iamadoula #pregnancy #childbirth #positivebirth #goldcoast #mumlife

13.01.2022 Spotted @avivaromm and had to share! Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? I personally have known about the positive effects dates can have but I never knew there's been actual studies to back it up too! I find this super interesting. What are your thoughts? "Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we ...don’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively. A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were: Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction) And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had: Greater cervical dilatation at admission Higher success rates of labor induction when needed A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth. Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my herbal bliss bites (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. This practice has not been found to elevate blood sugar but it's important to discuss use with your midwife or doc. The medical research suggests that even with GDM it appears safe." #ideservebirthsupport #prenatalcourse #prenatalclass #empoweredbirth #naturalbirth #naturalpregnancy #birthwithoutfear #birthandbeyond #birthdoula #pregnancy #childbirth #goldcoastdoula #goldcoastdoulas #iamadoula #datesinpregnancy
12.01.2022 Spotted @first_glance_photography and @2lifedoula and I could not agree any more with you! When I tell people what I do for work quite often they (usually older women actually!) ask me 'what does the partner do then?' Assuming having a doula in birth space replaces the role of the birthing partner. "This is so far from the truth! I am here to support you as a team. Your partner’s role in your birth space is so important to me and something that I encourage because let’s fac...e it I simply cannot give you that vital oxytocin rush that they can. You won’t get those beautiful love hormones from me anywhere near as much as you would from them. Oxytocin is what triggers and regulates surges during labour and birth and enables milk to be let down and ejected during breastfeeding. It is an incredibly important hormone and plays such a big role in not just labour but helping deliver the placenta and breastfeeding. How can your birth partner help with the production of this amazing love hormone ? Sex !!! Birth and sex are the highest amount of oxytocin a women’s body will receive. Keeping in mind it’s not advised to have sex after her waters have released due to the risk of infection. Light touch massage Kissing Nipple or clitorial stimulation Cuddle her, tell her how much you love her Stay calm, she will feed off your energy. Create a calm environment, dim the lights and put on her birth playlist. Anything that will make her feel happy and loved, you know her better than anyone so you will know the little things that make her feel like she is in her love bubble. #thisisbirth #birth #newborn #birthphotography #brisbanebirthphotographer #birthphotographer #birthphotographerbrisbane #birthwithoutfear #doula #goldcoastdoula #goldcoastdoulas #iamadoula #goldcoast #birthstories #birthbecomesher #empoweredbirthproject #badassmotherbirther #newborn #babygirl #babyboy #baby #stopcensoringmotherhood #vbac #oxytocin

10.01.2022 I know it's hard mama. I know it can be hard to get up every day and have these little people rely on you. I know it's hard to feel like sometimes your world is so small. I want to remind you, you are the world. You are the world that those little ones revolve around. You are their nurture, their home, their comfort. You are everything to them, and I hope even on your hard days you know how special you are. Especially to your little people. - Anonymous
10.01.2022 What a powerful message from this beautiful norwegian mama @saraaemiliee. Never stop asking yourself and the ones around you "how are you?" This is relevant to all of us but becomes hugely important when you're parenting little humans. "Keep smiling" they say but sometimes a smile can mean a thousand words. I remember having a rough day at home with kids. I was exhausted from lack of sleep and probably had an argument with my husband too. I was feeling so down. Lonely. Sad. ...I decided to go to a yoga class as a little "pick me up" and rocked up with this "smile" on my face. "I'm OK, everything is OK" I thought until I pumped into a friend of mine (by accident) who asked me the question: "How are you?" I crashed. I cried and sobbed how exhausted I am. How being a mum is the hardest thing I've ever done. How I need time for myself " She gave me a big cuddle. Listened with empathy and told me I was doing great job. That's all I needed. Parenthood is not an easy gig. Life in general is not an easy gig so: Let's choose to be honest Let's choose to be open Let's choose to be vulnerable Let's choose to look after ourselves Know that you and your feelings matter. And that smile? It is beautiful when it starts from inside!
07.01.2022 Having the right people supporting you in your birthing space and along the journey can make all the difference. Choose the right care provided by thinking what's important to YOU. Or maybe choose not to have a care provider at all. Think what's your ideal birth looking like?... Find out the policies and ask the right questions. There are so many birth professionals out there but not everyone is a perfect match. Did you know that if you're not happy with your care provider you have a right to change your care provider at any time? In the end it's your birth and your experience that matters! 06.01.2022 Planning a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean)? Be informed about updated guidelines What a great VBAC post by @preparedtobirth through @positivelyhypnobirthing VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean)... Last year there was an update to the NICE Guidelines in the UK around care for women having a VBAC. It seems however, that this guidance is taking its time to filter down in to practice. The guidelines (amongst other things) now state- No routine cannula. Water Birth should be supported. Monitoring should be offered (though also states that there isn’t conclusive evidence to say whether or not this identifies problems sooner than intermittent monitoring.. but still to offer in case). The chance of a successful vbac is around 75% (similar to the vaginal birth rate of a first time mum) and higher for those who have been in labour or had a vaginal birth before (85-90%!). The reason vbacs tend to be more ‘medicalised’ and the reason more medical management is still being offered is because of the ‘increased risk’ of uterine rupture. But what does this MEAN? The risk of uterine rupture in an unscarred uterus (ie no previous csection) is 0.005% For women having a vbac it is 0.5% VBA2C is 1.3% So yes, whilst the risk IS higher, it’s an incredibly RARE complication. And should certainly be balanced against the potential complications that can be caused by a medical approach to birth (eg bright lights, labour ward, birthing in a laying on back position, continuous monitoring etc.) Everyone’s choices for a birth after a previous c-section will be incredibly personal. There may be other complexities to take into account, previous birth experiences Etc. But the crucial thing to know is that everything you are offered, is an OFFER and it lies with you to decide which offers to accept and which to decline. You can still give birth in a birth centre or at home if you choose to, but it's worth initiating those conversations as early so you can to get a good plan in place for you and your baby. You can also choose to have a planned caesarean birth if you prefer. Photo via @birthbecomesyou
06.01.2022 Hi guys! I'm Laura, the new owner of Birthing From the Heart. I'm beyond excited about starting this new journey with you all and hope I get to support many beautiful mamas and families in the Gold Coast area! I feel so privileged to be able to work in such an empowering industry and can't wait to share my love, passion and knowledge with you all. I thought I'd share five facts about me so you can all get to know me a bit better. You can find more about me on my websit...e. It was my two beautiful, empowering birth experiences that really draw me into birth work. I felt so supported and loved and knew this is how every new mother deserves to feel when giving birth. I'm a mama of two little boys, now six years and 18 months. I moved here from Finland eight years ago and absolutely love the easy lifestyle here on the Southern GC. In my free time you'll most likely find me running after my boys on the beachfront or in yoga or pilates around the GC. I also love second-hand shopping and try to check out my favourite op-shops a few times a week. I've got a special interest in pre- and post-natal pilates and have just started studying to become a pilates mat work and reformer teacher. I work as a part time doula so you can also catch me at the Lululemon store, following my other passion. Can't wait to meet you all! 04.01.2022 When you find your birth photos from the new local women's magazine @the.damsels My dear friend and a fellow birth worker @lalunabirthcollective writes in her "Reclaiming The Power in Birth" - article: "Many women get pregnant not knowing anything about birth, other than this scene that is replicated over and over in our popular media. She goes to the doctor and follows the" normalised" path, unaware that there are other options. She doesn't understand that by not taking cha...rge of her birth experience she is not only passively accepting a 1 in 3 risk of having a traumatic experience that will affect her for the rest of her life, but she's missing out on a massive, incredible opportunity for her birth to be powerful and positively transformational. " "The time has come for this to change. Many people are waking up to the truth about birth - that it is a safe, natural process, and that the experience can be incredibly beautiful and transformational." "It is the birthright of women to have this opportunity to be shown their own power, their own strength, their own resilience. Through birth we are made not only into mothers, but into better versions of ourselves with more clarity, more depth and a greater ability to persevere and weather adversity." "So, get informed. Learn about the incredible wisdom of the body, until you have a trust so deep in the biology of birth that there is no room left for fear. - It's time to reclaim the power in birth." Congratulations on the beautifully written article Meme.
