15.01.2022 This interesting new research considered whether maternal age is associated with embryo splitting after a single embryo transfer. With increased age mums were more likely to experience the embryo splitting until age 36, after this the chances decreased. http://ow.ly/DC1D50Cl1xB

12.01.2022 Why do some Kenyan women stop using contraception even when they are not planning a pregnancy? This research found that there may be family conflicts over the use of modern contraceptives. Men and other social influencers need to be engaged in family planning. Other reasons included a fear of the side effects and cost. All these need to be considered by health professionals supporting young families in Kenya. http://ow.ly/H4JN50DBOql

08.01.2022 A study which looked at SARS-CoV-2 infection in babies has found that the risk of severe infection is very low. "Neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection is uncommon in... babies admitted to hospital. Infection with neonatal admission following birth to a mother with perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection was unlikely, and possible vertical transmission rare, supporting international guidance to avoid separation of mother and baby." (Gale et al 2020) The study traced all babies less than a month old with Covid-19 who were admitted into hospital in the UK. In total, 66 babies required treatment for Covid-19 infection, which was the equivalent of 1 in 1785 births. No baby died from the virus. Of more concern is that, while the overall chance of a baby needing hospital treatment for Covid-19 is low (0.06%, which is 1 in 1785 births in the UK) and no babies died, a high proportion of those who needed hospital treatment were from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic groups. The research was published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health and you can read the full text at https://www.thelancet.com//PIIS2352-4642(20)30342/fulltext #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #pregnant #birth #childbirth #duein2020 #duein2021 #drsarawickham #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #whatsrightforme #covid19 #covid19pregnancy See more
