11.01.2022 @stephlipson_doula_photographer World breastfeeding week. . So many things that I wanted to write for world breastfeeding week. But in this Covid mess it’s not happening. So here is a pic of me feeding my youngest. . A few quick tips, breastfeeding is a learnt skill for you and your baby (I didn’t truely learn this until my third, I just assumed they all came out instinctively knowing how to feed correctly, yeah nope not true, sometimes you need a little bit of help, I did wi...th Elsie) . Research as much as you can about normal newborn behaviour and feeding patterns (or lack thereof). Reach out to professionals or trusted people in your circle for help and support. I highly recommend @maternalinstinctsbyamberley She has an amazing online course you can do, she also offers one-on-one support too! @the_roxanne_may is also another wonderful source of information/support. . You will get different advice from every professional/person (ahem the random lady at the checkout ) that you come across. While well intentioned, the best thing you can do is follow your instinct with what feels right for you and your baby. If you are doing something because Martha from mothers group told you to and it doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not right for you and your baby. What’s right for one person may not suit someone else. We are all different, only you know what works best for you and your family! . And finally surround yourself with people that will support you, hold you, hear you and love you. It can be tough. I had no idea how isolated and trapped I would feel in those early months feeding a baby. I felt my freedom and ability to do as I please had been ripped out from under me. If you are feeling like this, try and make some time for yourself, do something that makes you happy and fills your cup, reach out and ask for help. I promise it does ease up as the months go by. . Breastfeeding has been one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done. My mind is still blown that I can fully nourish another human from something my body makes. . . . . . #wbw2020 #worldbreastfeedingweek #breastfedbaby #breastfeedingnewborn #breastfeedingmum #breas See more

01.01.2022 Posted @withregram @laurenanddouglas.birth {Fear->Tension->Pain... Breaking the cycle} Someone in a mother’s group I’m in recently asked about how to be less stressed out about labour, and I’m going to apologise in advance that I’m just copy/pasting my comment here, but a few people said they found it helpful so hopefully you will as well! Fear leads to tension which leads to pain. ... 1. If you can replace your fears about birth with educating yourself (what are your options? What does that term xyz actually mean? What is labour doing to my body? (Google the article the purpose and power of pain in labor by Judith A. Lothian!!) then you can make informed choices that lead to you feeling like you are empowered rather than out of control. 2. Replace tension with relaxation - this particularly applies to in labour but also leading up to labour, pour yourself a bath with Epsom salts and a couple drops of lavender - don’t allow your mind to swirl with your fears go for a walk/swim/float in the pool to release tension, find a pregnancy pilates or yoga group - anything you can do to release tension. In labour this might be as simple as having your partner remind you to relax your shoulders or bouncing on a birth ball to loosen up. 3. Reduce pain with comfort measures (this applies to in labour). Google natural comfort measures in labour and you’ll find lists of simple things you can do as a replacement, pre cursor, or just to augment any medical pain relief you might plan to use. The biggest thing I would say though is to educate yourself on the process, not the scary things - the fascinating things about how your body is working in labour, why you dilate, why your uterus contracts etc etc - because if you feel fearful your body will produce adrenaline and send you into fight/flight/freeze mode, which actually works against the hormone (oxytocin) you need to be producing for your body to labour well. Your body says ahh it’s not safe to birth here and your labour can slow down, get more painful, or stall. When you replace your fear with education, and your tension with relaxation you begin to break the fear-tension-pain cycle and hopefully allow space.
