20.01.2022 Things must change. A fantastic post by my NDC colleague Katie who expresses exactly how I feel and why I do what I do with my ‘Bub Savvy’ services. Which are all about helping you prepare the one source you can always trust for the right answers ...Yourself! If you receive advice from a health professional that leaves you doubting yourself, you can: ... - Ask them what evidence they are basing their advice on. - Tell them how their advice has made you feel. - Seek support from elsewhere. As Pinky McKay suggests, ask yourself ‘Is it safe? Does it feel right? Is it respectful?’ Things will not change unless we speak up. ~ Katie Parker Still places in my Bub Savvy Webinar on the 12th of September. https://birthsavvy.com.au/event/bub-savvy-workshop/

20.01.2022 Signs and symptoms of perinatal anxiety and depression can vary but may include the above list taken from the panda.org.au website. . If you are feeling any of these please tell someone who cares. . This week is 15th annual PANDA Week which is all about raising awareness about perinatal anxiety and depression, including the signs to look for and where to find support.... . The theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. . What does this mean? . It is so important to know when to reach out but it is equally important to know who to reach out to and that when you do reach out, you will be supported by someone who cares. . Whether it is family members, health professionals, perinatal mental health specialists, tell someone who cares. . PANDA National Helpline cares 1300 726 306 . #icare

19.01.2022 This quote just gave me an ’aha moment!’ . I have been talking about how our brains are hard wired to compare ourselves to others in my Bub Savvy classes. . We are social animals so our brain is always checking if we are ’fitting in’.... . In the past we only compared ourselves to our family or village in real time and we got to see lots of mistakes. . But today new mums are bombarded by images of ’perfect’ through social media. . I know we all know that social media isn’t the real world in a conscious ’intellectual ’ way. . But the part of our brain that is constantly scanning to protect us is very primative and works is a subconscious/unconscious way. . So as an antidote to this I will willingly share all the mistakes I made with my 4 children so you can learn from them . I think the first one was listening to my ’Plunkett’ nurse and not trusting my instincts with my first bub. . See more

19.01.2022 A great opportunity for new parents wanting to find out all about the Possums approach and to help teach health professionals about neuroprotective approaches to infant sleep challenges.

16.01.2022 I talk about changes in partners hormones during my classes so I love this extra bit of research.

16.01.2022 This . And yes, I do own a couple of Sara’s velvet vaginas to use as teaching aids. .... Posted @withregram @drsarawickham So many "velvet vaginas" were sent out all over the world from our house this weekend! I love that so many of you are going to be using these birth education tools, which are a beautiful way of showing how and why it's time to move past what the textbooks say and celebrate the wonky, wild, untameable reality of our birthing bodies. Here's one of my favourite quotes, from the work I did a few years ago on the "myth" of ten centimetres. Loads more info on "velvet vaginas" at www.sarawickham.com/crafts and if you want to know more about my work, have a surf of my website while you're there!

15.01.2022 Unit 1 of the Positive Birth Program by Hypnobirthing Australia often has this effect on couples . The focus is all about the amazing female birthing body and how to work with it for the best birth possible. . Quite a different approach to traditional hospital classes!!!... . #positivebirth #birtheducation #perthhypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #birthyourway #toolsforbirth

15.01.2022 What a fun weekend!. . Can’t wait to hear these amazing birth stories . #perthhypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirth #hypnobirthing #birthsupport #birth #birtheducation

13.01.2022 Another important role of you birth partner is to advocate for you. . I have recently had chats with 3 partners who told me just how hard they had to work to make sure their birth preferences were honoured. . I know in the ideal world this wouldn’t have to happen (2 partners had to take the care provider out of the room to have discussions, one unfortunately, had to have the conversation over the mum’s belly). But I’m a realist.... . Which is why I love the Positive Birth Program by Hypnobirthing Australia . . We cover when births deviate from the birth plan and when births deviate from routine guidelines. . The wonderful thing was that all 3 mums were blissfully unaware of the conversations that were had and were able to keep following their plan. . I will post Lori’s full story soon . #perthhypnobirthing #birthplans #birthsupport #positivebirth #hypnobirthingaustralia See more

13.01.2022 This . Posted @withregram @marissathemilkmom I can't tell you how many times I have received messages from women, asking if their milk has dried up because their breasts feel soft or aren’t getting engorged anymore.... Here's the deal...it's normal for breasts to feel softer or even "empty" around 6-12 weeks. (depending on the woman) Many mothers start to doubt their supply around this time because if they were pumping, they would likely notice a decrease. If they are exclusively nursing they may feel less full/heavy. It's normal for your breasts to feel mostly soft after the first few weeks. This means that your body has figured out how much milk is needed for your little babe and how much milk is being removed. It means that your breasts are no longer making an excess of milk! It doesn't mean your supply is gone. It doesn't mean you've dried up. It doesn't mean you need to supplement. Some women are never "engorged"! Even from the start. Signs a baby is thriving and drinking: + steady weight gain on their own individual curve (whether that's 2 percentile or 99 percentile) + has at least 3 yellow poos (for younger than 6 weeks) and at least 5 wet diapers + you can hear swallows when you listen closely (for mature milk) + is content for at least a few minutes in between nursing + has some calm alert times between feedings See more

12.01.2022 I am really looking forward to this conference :)

11.01.2022 OMG how gorgeous is this . Following on from my previous post, Christmas is always a cause of stress for me because I know someone women will be offered inductions simply because their estimated due date clashes with their caregivers holiday plans. . But Fairy Lights!!!... . Christmas also brings a greater access to Fairy Lights and I just love Fairy Lights . Posted @withregram @danielle_grammer Getting everything ready to meet our baby girl! Birthing tub all set up and everyone has been working on creating some birth affirmations for me. #homebirth #mynest #hypnobirthing #waterbirth #birthaffirmations . #birthspace #fairylights #christmas

11.01.2022 We talk a lot about the risks and benefits of induction, but what about the risks and benefits of augmentation. Augmentation is when a care provider offers to speed up a woman’s labour with intervention. One way of doing this is with a Syntocinon drip.... Here is some research to help decide whether or not you will agree to this. Conclusions: Early oxytocin augmentation for slow labour progress does not appear to be more benecial than expectant management regarding women’s perceptions of childbirth one month postpartum. Given the risks for the foetus associated with oxytocin treatment, prudent expectant management seems to be a safe and viable alternative. https://www.academia.edu//Women_s_experiences_after_early_

11.01.2022 Such a great line up of speakers at this years CAPEA conference. And the great news is it is a virtual conference so it will be available for viewing by all registrants for 4 weeks after the event. It is excellent value for money especially for students.... https://www.capeaconference.org/speakers-and-program

09.01.2022 Another book to add to my bookshelf by one of my favourite Oxytocin researchers. . Releasing our own oxytocin really, really matters and synthetic oxytocin (Syntocinon or Pitocin) just isn’t the same. .... We are messing with so much when we deny women the release (and ability to use) their own oxytocin in pre-labour, labour and birth. . ...oxytocin was originally thought to be a maternal hormone. Later on it was labelled the hormone of love, but the aim of this book is to show that it should really be called the‘hormone of health and life’. (p. 135) . #oxytocin #oxytocinmatters #kerstinuvnäsmoberg #hormones #birtheducation #positivebirth #positivemotherhood

07.01.2022 Another class all graduated and ready for their positive births. . As you can see we are still distancing so still restricted to 5 couples. . I know this means I have had to disappoint a lot of people (I am almost full for January now too).... But on the upside, classes have been really interactive and personal. . #perthhypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirth #birtheducation #birthsavvy See more
