24.01.2022 ROBOTICS || Year 4 have entered the world of robotics and they are loving it! Last week the students put their coding knowledge to the test to modify a robotic Sphero and applied their design skills to create a Lego character. These were tested for a 2 metres duration, all before entering The Hall of Dreams or Nightmares racetrack where students had to navigate obstacles and each other as they applied their digital skills to practical challenges. Next time, students will begin writing their own robot code and they can’t wait! #STEM #Year4 #BishopTyrrell #robotics #creativity #deeplearning #learningisfun #coding #science #seizetheday

18.01.2022 DEEP LEARNING YEAR 1 || As part of our student-led Deep Learning, Global Citizens Project, our Year 1 students collectively decided they would like to focus their time on helping the homeless in Newcastle. Our little global citizens have done us very proud, they know they can personally make a difference in the world by practising kindness and compassion. As a cohort, they have reached out to our community, asking for your support in their quest to make a difference in the lives of those living in need. 17.01.2022 ROCKET LAUNCH || The recent success of the SpaceX launch has generated great excitement in our classrooms around space exploration. So, what is fundamental to a successful rocket launch? As part of National Science Week, our students had the opportunity to become involved in building, designing and launching their own rockets. We quickly learnt that atmospheric conditions, as well as build specifications, play a large role in the success of a launch. We think our students were incredible in designing and executing their very own rocket launches! #Nationalscienceweek #science #BishopTyrrell #Rocketlaunch
17.01.2022 SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS || NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK Our Preschool students were most excited about all the experiments they were able to conduct during National Science Week. A favourite was the milk experiment. Milk was poured into a tray, some drops of food colouring and then our little scientists used a cotton bud dipped in dishwashing liquid to create a chemical reaction. Have you tried this experiment at home? So good to see our little scientists discover and delight. Our preschool team support our preschoolers so they are active contributors, keen to explore, to share, to take risks, be challenged, discover and learn. #BishopTyrrell #NationalScienceWeek2020 #exploring #discovery #delightinlearning #preschool #curious #engagewiththeworld

12.01.2022 Today is International Students' Day. A day created by the UN to bring focus to ensure education is available to all regardless of beliefs or circumstances. On the 17 November in 1939 during World War II, events unfolded in Prague, resulting in nine university students being executed. Throughout history, there have been many advocates for the education of all, and still today, education remains an inaccessible right for millions of children around the world. On International ...Students' Day we wish to celebrate Bishop Tyrrell students, each day we see them seizing the opportunities that they have. We celebrate multiculturalism and appreciate the international diversity students bring to our College community and the wider community. Our students have a global perspective, commitment to social equity, empathy and compassion. They are problem solvers who will change the world. #BishopTyrrell #Seizetheopportunity #Changemakers #Educationisagift #Educationisaright See more

10.01.2022 VISUAL ARTS || Art is not about making the perfect artwork, but rather, it is a representation of a students’ imagination and thinking. Our Year 7 Visual Arts students have been busy collaborating on an incredible installation that explores architecture, culture and urbanisation. Their installation investigates the medium of cardboard to make large scale sculptures which provoke thoughtful conversations about migration and reflect how our students interpret their world. 03.01.2022 This week we welcomed our Year 7 2021 students to experience a 'taste' of high school. There was great anticipation and excitement felt throughout the day, as the Year 7 2021 students enjoyed meeting new friends, high school teachers and experienced activities in a few different subjects. Our senior leaders organised some fun activities where students got to know each other in their house groups. House spirit and friendly rivalry as already begun! Our House system strengthen...s peer relations and a sense of belonging beyond specific year groups. Our 2021 students investigated and experimented in the Science labs, made pizza in Food Technology and enjoyed a 'treasure' hunt in geography to familiarise themselves with the secondary campus. We so look forward to welcoming them back again next week for the second day of their orientation program. The transition from Year 6 to Year 7 can be daunting, so we were thrilled to see how excited and comfortable our 2021 cohort were. As the year starts to wind down, we are energised by the possibilities that 2021 will bring our students. If you know someone who is considering joining our Bishop Tyrrell community next year, please encourage them to contact our College Registrar, Mrs Barb Durie, 4979 8484 or [email protected]. We would love to have them experience a 'day at Bishop Tyrrell'. See more

01.01.2022 Students took part in The Big Watermelon Experiment for National Science Week. This is a collaborative science experiment involving over 300 schools to test how many rubber bands it takes to implode watermelons of varying sizes. After measuring the weight and circumference of each melon, the groups counted the number of rubber bands it took to break the rind. We will send off our results and then analyse the trends using the collective data from the other schools next week. ...In case you’re curious- It took 153 rubber bands for the watermelon to implode. #BishopTyrrell #Scienceweek2020 #learningisfun #watermelonexperiment #DeepLearning #curiosity #buddingscientists #Collaboration #Seniorschool See more
