23.01.2022 Did you know that within Australia almost 4 million people avoid certain food types because of an allergy or an intolerance ? A food intolerance is different to a food allergy, a food intolerance is defined as a non-immune mediated reaction to food. It involves the body’s systems responding to the food trigger which causes different symptoms of varying aetiology. Different intolerances have different causes as to why your body can’t digest that food properly. Some common foo...d intolerances may include: Dairy products Monosodium glutamate (MSG, additives numbers 621 and 625) Vasoactive amines (found in pineapples, banana, baked meat, vegetables, red wine, avocados, chocolate, citrus fruits and mature cheese) Salicylates (found in herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables) Toxins Irritants (caffeine and chilli) Food additives such as benzoate’s, sulphites and nitrates In some individuals symptoms of a food intolerance may occur up to 12-24 hours after the food has been consumed. Therefore, most people think their symptoms were caused by the last food they consumed when in fact it could be something that they consumed 2 days ago! Food intolerances can be left unidentified and/or self-diagnosed and therefore not manged properly. At Bites, our dietitians can help identify the cause of your symptoms by ruling out any other health conditions that could be causing these symptoms to occur and will help you identify individual triggers that should be avoided. Once the food has been identified, you and your dietitian will work out dose thresholds and slowly reintroduce these foods back into your diet in a way that does not cause symptoms. It is likely that your body can cope with small amounts of the food type and the food can be incorporated back into your meal plan in the amounts your body can tolerate! This means that you can still enjoy the foods you are intolerant too in small amounts without triggering symptoms! 20.01.2022 Becoming a mum and giving birth is a major experience and lifestyle change that you go through! When you are given the all clear to begin working out again by your health care professional or women’s health physio, it can be overwhelming to know where to start! The main focus when beginning to exercise after giving birth should be on pelvic floor recovery, rebuilding strength and getting your body functioning at its best again. The benefits of exercise on post-natal health: ...Improvements in pelvic floor strength Feeling stronger and able to cope with the demands of motherhood Successful management of prolapse Returning towards pre-baby weight post-partum. When you are pregnant a hormone called relaxin is released which softens the soft tissue structures in your body to allow room for your baby to grow and also allows your pelvic floor to stretch during birth . This hormone can however increase your risk of back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction and other complications post birth, which can have long lasting effects if not managed properly. Our exercise physiologists understand female anatomy and are experts in helping women recover post-partum. With our help we can guide you through effective pelvic floor safe exercise routines and assist you in managing diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation) whilst rebuilding overall strength and conditioning to help you feel your absolute best while being the best mum you can be to your baby! 12.01.2022 Did you know that PCOS affects between 6-18% of women at the reproductive age ? PCOS is a complex hormonal condition characterised by hyperandrogenism, anovulation and/or polycystic ovary morphology. What is PCOS and its associated symptoms: - PCOS is associated with hyperandrogenism (increased circulation of androgen levels such as testosterone)... - Irregular menses - Infertility - Polycystic ovaries - Insulin resistance - Increased luteinizing hormone - Decreased sex hormone Evidence has shown that reduction in body weight between 5-10% has helped to improve PCOS symptoms including hormone levels and ovulation ! Evidence has also shown that following an isocaloric for both lean and overweight women with PCOS has helped to improve insulin sensitivity. To successfully treat PCOS, goals should be individualised . Bites dietitians can provide with you with ongoing support and dietary prescription to help manage your PCOS symptoms. 11.01.2022 Did you know that 1 in 6 couples experience difficulties conceiving!? Factors affecting fertility may be genetic, environmental or behavioural. There are many treatments that can help to increase fertility however, these are often expensive and invasive. A simple and effective approach to increase your fertility in both men and women is nutrition and diet! Men should focus on the components of their diet that impact their sperm quality. Here are some evidence based tips that ...have been proven to help increase fertility in men: Eat a nutrient rich diet, focusing on nutrients that have been proven to increase sperm quality such as zinc and folate. Fun Fact: zinc is required for spermatogenesis and sperm motility and folate is required for synthesising genetic information or DNA that is found in sperm. Spermatogenesis is the process of developing and increasing sperm counts, which take 90 days. Therefore, consuming a good quality diet 3 months prior to conception is needed to increase fertility. Sperm are easily damaged by free radicals that are in the body. Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants can help protect against damage by neutralising the free radicals. Modifying lifestyle factors such as smoking and drinking alcohol can also help to increase fertility. Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight is important when trying to conceive. Losing 5-10% of body weight can help to regulate hormones related to sperm production. If you have had trouble conceiving and would like more advice and assistance in achieving a healthy diet that will increase your fertility, get in touch with us! Our dietitians can provide you with a meal plan that is high in the macro and micronutrients that are associated with higher sperm quality. Additionally, we can assess lifestyle factors that may be affecting optimum sperm quality which can affect fertility. By conducting this assessment we can make changes to your current diet and lifestyle that could potentially be reducing fertility! The seriousness of falls also increases as we get older as it can result in serious injury and permanent damage such as disability, restriction of activity, increased likelihood of fractures, loss of confidence and fear of falling! These factors can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life and independence. The factors ...that contribute to a person’s risk of falling include the following with the ones we are able to help you with marked with a below: Old age History of falls Poor balance Slow reaction time Muscle weakness Poor eyesight Reduced sensation in lower limbs Cognitive impairment Decreased mobility Medical conditions inducing tremor e.g. Parkinson’s disease Medications that can affect the vestibular system. Our Exercise Physiologists and Dietitians can help you reduce the impact (6/11 risk factors) of many aspects of falling! About three quarters of all falls reported are caused by slips, trips and loss of balance. These are things that can somewhat be prevented with the implementation of appropriate strategies! Exercise can help to improve balance, walking speed, muscular strength and psychological factors. By implementing certain exercises into an exercise program we can help to train you to respond better to an unforeseen balance challenge such as a slippery surface. Certain exercises help to train and condition your body to respond more appropriately to the challenge rather than falling! Fall prevention strategies and balance exercises MUST be prescribed to you by a health professional as certain assessments need to be completed before commencing exercise strategies to prevent further injury. Our exercise physiologists will assess your risk of falling before prescribing you any exercise. We will take into account your medical history and current abilities to ensure we provide you the best exercise program to help improve your balance and decrease your risk of falling.
