21.01.2022 Hopefully everyone has had wonderful holidays and is getting a great start to the school year. We're starting term one with the wonderful Comics from Scratch and the classic Level Up! Comics From Scratch! In this course, students design their own interactive comic using Scratch programming. Starting from the ground up, students will be guided by professional writers and illustrators to craft their very own adventure story! Once this is complete, they'll then jump into Scratch... and bring their comic to life by learning how to use visual programming to add animations and interactive story elements! This term, Comics from Scratch is taking place on Tuesday evening from 5:30pm to 7:30pm starting on the 27th of February. Level Up! In this course, students design their own platform game (think Super Mario Brothers), including coming up with the world, characters and enemies that will populate their game. They then create all of their own art assets using pens, pencils and crayons, which we scan in. As the program continues, we bring the videogame to life by learning some programming and creating a playable game. By the end of the course, each student will have taken a game from concept through to completion. This term, Level Up is taking place on Thursday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm starting starting on the 1st of March You can learn more and purchase tickets here: www.bitlink.com.au/events If you have questions about our programs, please don't hesitate to contact us on [email protected].

17.01.2022 The Bitlink team have been working hard and we're all set for another round of after school workshops at the Battery Shed in Launceston! In term one of this year, we have 3 programs ready to go. Creative Mode is a Minecraft after school club that teaches children aged 9-12 about working effectively as part of an online community. If you heard about our Minecraft Club late last year, Creative Mode is basically an evolution of that workshop.... Level Up is another program that we're aiming at children in the 9-12 age range. This one is all about learning how to build a video game from scratch. Participants will create all of their own artwork using pens, paper, crayons, etc., then we'll bring that artwork into a game engine and teach the kids how to use programming to bring their world to life. Finally, we have Redstone Rangers, another Minecraft program that's designed for teens in the 13-16 age range. This series of workshops will focus on some of the more advanced concepts in Minecraft, including mods, creating circuits and other interactive elements, as well as using the redstone feature in Minecraft to learn about logic and how computers work. If you, or someone you know, has children who might enjoy these workshops, please pass the link on. We hope to see you there! You can find RSVP links for all three workshops here: http://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/bitlink-9765630222

13.01.2022 Bookings are now open for our summer education program in Launceston, Recharge! You can find more information, and a link to purchase tickets, here: www.bitlink.com.au/events If you haven't heard of our Recharge program before, it's a 5-day intensive summer program, where we work with a group of up to 12 students to build interactive exhibits for a museum or art gallery. This year, the program is being run in collaboration with QVMAG (as it has been in the past), as well as... Launceston College (a new addition for this year). We're going to be running this program from Launceston College's STEAM NGN facility, a well-equipped hackerspace which means that we'll have all the gear we need to create awesome interactive experiences over the five days of the program. There's also going to be plenty of mentors on site (including staff from Bitlink and Launceston College), and guest speakers from other local organisations, as well as a few off-site visits and behind the scenes tours. It's going to be awesome! If your son or daughter is interested in game design, 3D printing, electronics, virtual reality, or technology more generally, then this program will undoubtedly be a great fit for them! Also, there's no need to have any prior experience -- we'll be starting with the basics and working our way up from there. There's way more information on the tickets page, but so that you have the basic details up front, the program runs 10am to 4pm, from Monday the 16th of January to Friday the 20th of January. All sessions will be held at the STEAM NGN (Launceston College, on the Paterson St side). The cost for the whole program is $200, which is inclusive of GST and processing charges. You don't need to bring any equipment, but we don't cater lunch, so please bring a packed lunch or money to buy lunch each day. That's about it! If you would like any further information (which isn't on the tickets page), then please feel free to get in touch with us via [email protected].

04.01.2022 It's that time again! Tickets are now available for our tech education after school programs for term three in Launceston! You can find a quick blurb about each of the programs we're offering this term below, but if you want to get straight to the details and ticket links, head over to our website: www.bitlink.com.au/events Now, here are the details!... We're running two programs this term, Electric Threads and Zombie Electronics! Electric Threads (Kids 9-12, Tuesdays 4pm to 6pm, at the QVMAG Battery Shed) In this course we'll be combining electronics and craft to build wearable technology! Each week we'll be discovering a new element of electronics or sewing and applying it to cool projects, such as a LED dog collar and sneaker attachment with an accelerometer that will light up as you or your pooch move around! By completing this course, students will learn the basics of the Arduino platform, including some introductory programming, alongside electronics fundamentals, sewing and design skills. Zombie Electronics (Kids 9-12, Thursdays 4pm to 6pm, at the QVMAG Battery Shed) In this course, we're going to be learning all about electronics by building gadgets that you could use in the event of a zombie outbreak! Each week we'll be learning all about Arduino, electronics, and programming to help defend your base; building tripwires, alarms, zombie detectors and even a zombie distraction robot! You can learn more and purchase tickets here: www.bitlink.com.au/events If you have questions about our programs, please don't hesitate to contact us on [email protected].

01.01.2022 We're trying something new! We're going to be working with Enterprize to run a free family code club at Enterprize Launceston over the next few months. You'll see some familiar faces from the Bitlink team running the program, but this will be a bit different to our normal after school programs.... Firstly, this is a program for adults and children, and all children will need to be accompanied by an adult (a family member or family friend) and you'll work together and learn new skills as a team. Secondly, these are a bit shorter than our normal programs (one hour per session, rather than two). Thirdly, you'll need to bring your own laptop to the session participate (though one laptop between two people is fine). And finally, these events are completely free! Sound good? You can RSVP/learn more here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1425852904135226/ And as always, please help us spread the word! :)
