To decide what’s reasonable you should consider: your personal circumstances, (eg. family responsibilities) whether you’ll get more pay (eg. penalty rates) the needs of the workplace the type of work you do whether your salary includes work on a public holiday whether you’re full-time, part-time, casual or a shiftworker how much notice you’re given about working the amount of notice you give when refusing to work. When requesting that an employee work on a public holiday, employers need to consider all relevant circumstances, including the ones listed above. Want to work because you need the extra dosh? 06.01.2022 Base rates of pay will increase by 3.5%. The Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.5% increase to award wages and the national minimum wage. For every 26 days you work, you earn 1 sick day. So during a 3 month probation period you accumulate around 2.5 sick days. Some awards and enterprise agreements provide employees with extra pay if they don't get a meal break when they're supposed to. For example, the Restaurant Award, says that employees who aren't given a meal break should be paid time and a half from when the break was meant to start until they can take their break. When meal breaks should be given is also set out in awards and agreements. For instance, employees under the Fast Food Award are entitled to an unpaid meal break if their shift is between 5 to 9 hours, and the break can't be during the first or last hour of their shift. Remember, not being given a break and not taking your break are two different things. If your boss tells you to go on your break and you choose to skip it, you aren’t entitled to extra pay.
