23.01.2022 Foreign investment review laws will be changed to ensure the interests of regional, rural and remote businesses are protected through the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. All proposed foreign investments into Australia subject to the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 (the Act) will require approval, providing a significant protection for agricultural land. By bringing the threshold for screening down to zero dollars, the Australian Government will ensure all ...proposed foreign investments are appropriately scrutinised. These measures will remain in place for the duration of the current crisis, with the Government recognising foreign investment will play an important part in helping many businesses recover from the pandemic’s economic harm securing jobs and supporting our economic recovery.

23.01.2022 Should managers be held accountable for poor performance? Meeting objectives and improving the 'bottom line' is critical to the success of an organization. So should a manager be held directly responsible for the organization's failure or are there just too many factors outside of the manager's control, such as, the economy, competitor's actions, government policies and the state of a particular industry? I think a good manager should be able to understand the environment the...y're operating in, be able to anticipate change and exploit opportunities. The manager, just like a politician, must be held accountable when profits are down, policy has failed or objectives aren't met. What do you think?

19.01.2022 NEW $130 BILLION SUPPORT PACKAGE TO HELP KEEP EMPLOYEES The Federal Government has announced a new $130 billion support package in order to help businesses keep their employees over the next six months during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. The policy involves paying employers $1500 per fortnight for each employee they keep on over the next six months. It’s been nicknamed the Jobkeeper allowance.... The Jobkeeper payments will be available to full-time workers, part-time workers, sole traders and casual workers who have been with their employer for 12 months or more. New Zealanders living in Australia on 444 visas will also be able to access the payments through their employers. Payments will flow from the first week of May but will be backdated to today. Businesses will be required to keep the employee on their books in order to distribute the payment. It will be a flat-rate of $1500 per fortnight for each employee regardless of what they usually earn, with employers able to add extra payments on top of this if they wish.

19.01.2022 With the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic leading to the closure of pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes there’s no better time to be supporting local businesses. This evening, Nicci and I dropped in to the Goldfields HotelMotel to pick up our takeaway meals and had a good chat with the Manager, Jason Groves about local issues. There are some huge challenges ahead but together we will get through it. ... Remember to Shop Local, Buy Local and Stay Local.

19.01.2022 With restaurants and cafes around the Barkly region restricted to only selling takeaway we must continue to support our local businesses more than ever. Tonight, I dropped in to the Sporties Steak & Grill to buy some takeaway meals for the family and to catch up with Noor and Pashya Noorizal for a chat about current business conditions. Thank-you for the Mother’s Day cupcakes.... Please remember to Shop Local, Buy Local and Stay Local.

17.01.2022 Farming businesses and communities stand to benefit from the Australian Government’s move to extend working holiday maker and other temporary visas amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, allowing those who are unable to leave Australia to continue working. These changes will give certainty for seasonal workers and temporary visa holders of continued work, and certainty for our farmers who rely on a reliable and secure workforce to assist with food production.

15.01.2022 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE RELIEF PACKAGE Around one million families are set to receive free child care during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Australian Government will help deliver hip pocket relief and help the early childhood education and care sector make it through to the other side of this crisis.... Under this plan, the Australian Government will pay 50 per cent of the sector’s fee revenue up to the existing hourly rate cap based on a point in time before parents started withdrawing their children in large numbers, but only so long as services remain open and do not charge families for care. The funding will apply from 6 April based on the number of children who were in care during the fortnight leading into 2 March, whether or not they are attending services. This plan supports families while also ensuring as many of the sector’s 13,000 child care and early learning services as possible can keep their doors open for workers and vulnerable families who need those services. 11.01.2022 How important are HR skills in small to medium size business? We all know how valuable good leadership is to an organisation but in a small to medium size business how many managers are actually immersing themselves in the goal of creating an environment where the best, the brightest, the most creative are attracted, retained and, most importantly, unleashed to exceed your expectations? Managers in small to medium size business need to have human resource management skills. T...he manager needs to be involved in the recruitment and selection process and, once recruited, the employee needs to be inducted so that they feel valued, understand company goals and develop the right company culture. However, it doesn't stop there. Timely communication and regular engagement designed to coach and guide the employee’s performance is essential. As the manager, you need to be approachable, you need to know how to have the challenging conversations about employee performance and be willing to speak freely with your employees about work, social and, at times, personal issues. Good HR skills are critical and could be the difference between success or failure in the workplace. Let us know your thoughts and share some of your experience and learnings.

The Australian Government is also providing funding to regional and remote communities while travel restrictions are in place so they are prepared and responsive to evolving issues that emerge during the crisis. The Aboriginals Benefit Account will deliver $10 million across the four Land Councils in the Northern Territory to allow them to address immediate infrastructure needs and travel expenses associated with people returning to homelands. Community Night Patrols will be bolstered with up to $10 million to extend their reach and provide guidance to their community, ensure safety is maintained and that travel and physical distancing requirements are adhered to. $23 million will go towards enhancing the delivery of critical social support programs, including alcohol and other drug services, social and emotional wellbeing projects, family support and youth engagement and diversion programs. $5 million will be made available to expand the school nutrition program in the Northern Territory so that meals can continue to be delivered during school closures and holiday periods and also to extend the program to vulnerable families and the elderly where required. 02.01.2022 School Councils across the Northern Territory are providing job certainty to more than 1700 casual staff employed directly by government schools, in the event schools are forced to close due to the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Across the Northern Territory, our School Councils directly employ more than 1800 support staff, which includes cleaners, grounds and maintenance personnel, canteen staff and critical classroom support staff. More than 1700 of these employees, or 9...0 per cent, are employed on a casual basis. This means that in the event that schools may need to temporarily close, other than for standard scheduled stand down periods, all School Council staff will continue to be paid. The decision to guarantee casual School Council staff the payment they were expecting throughout this pandemic will not cost our schools any more than they had budgeted for before the impacts of Coronavirus hit. Thank-you to the Tennant Creek Primary - School Council and to all of our School Councils in the Barkly region.
