18.01.2022 Ctenanthe setosa ‘Grey Star’ Long-stemmed clumping softwood perennial from Brazil kept for its decorative foliage (flowers are unremarkable), often known as prayer plants, as they fold their leaves up as if in prayer each night. Being an evergreen plant, it will keep its leaves throughout the year and is known for growing to a height of approximately 1m in the garden with a clump-forming habit. Expect blooming to occur in early spring.... They tolerate periods of dryness and low humidity. These attributes have made them very popular as houseplants, but they are also sturdy understory plants in the tropics and subtropics. Should they dry out for a period of time, the plants have a unique way of conserving water the leaves simply roll in on themselves, reducing transpiration. In the garden plant in a location that enjoys shade or dappled sun. Doing well indoors in a bright location too. After a good wet season, the plant can double in size so provide it with some space to really make an impact. Provided with organically enriched well mulched soils, additional fertilizer and an occasional watering during dry periods, they are very attractive, lush and vigorous.

14.01.2022 Pteris Cretica Varigated Cretan Brake Fern The key to growing good pteris is to provide enough humidity and bright, filtered light to keep the plant thriving, never expose them to direct sunlight. Pteris ferns are not overly demanding when it comes to water, although like most ferns they do require ample humidity. These are relatively fast growing ferns and should be re potted every spring. This plant remains about 45 cm in height.... They love a steady supply of water and average temperatures, but will quickly show signs of stress in very dry environments. These signs include brown leaf margins and dropping leaves, although some leaf drop is typical. They also don't like being waterlogged and plants that are allowed to sit in saturated or soggy soil will quickly succumb to root rot. The leaves of this fern can be somewhat brittle, so avoid placing them in areas where people or animals are likely to brush up against them. They do, however, work particularly well for tabletops or desks, where it will be easier to appreciate their delicate and colorful foliage. They are excellent for hanging baskets.

08.01.2022 Peace Lily 'Sensation' - Spathiphyllum Sensation' is a dramatically large hybrid - the largest of all commercially produced Spathiphyllums. The foliage is dark green and tough, with an attractively ribbed texture. This is one Spathiphyllum that is popular even without being in bloom, however, intermittent blooming cycles will produce large, well-shaped white flowers. ... You can enjoy 'Sensation' with very little maintenance. 'Sensation' should be placed in a bright light with no direct or harsh sunlight. Water only when soil feels dry 2-4 cm below soil surface or prior to foliage wilting. The time interval between watering will vary pending light, temperature, soil porosity and time of year. Feed with a well-balanced liquid fertilizer quarterly. Do not over-water or allow pot to sit in water for any prolonged period of time.

07.01.2022 Tillandsia cyanea - Pink Quill Tillandsia cyanea is one of 374 species of the genus Tillandsia. Pink Quill is an epiphyte from Ecuador and is a member of the bromeliad family of air plants, and gets its name from the plume of bright pink bracts that last for months. Blooming is around April and May in the tropics. The inflorescence is a flattened plume of deep pink or red bracts from which violet-blue flowers emerging for a brief show, 1 or 2 at a time, for long perio...ds. These plants do best in bright indirect sunlight. They need medium temperatures of 50 to 65 degrees at night and day temperatures of 68 degrees or higher. Pink Quills need a loose, fast draining soil (2 parts peat moss to 1 part loam to 1 part sharp sand or perlite). They can also be grown on slabs of bark or tree fern fiber. Because the roots don't drink up water, these tree-dwelling plants gather moisture and nutrients through their leaves. Mist the foliage with water a few times a week. The water that runs off should be enough to wet the roots as the potting mix should be kept moist at all times. Fertilize weekly with a balanced fertilizer diluted to the strength recommended on the label. Plants can be divided at any time of the year.

01.01.2022 Begonia rex - Rex Begonia hybrid Rhizomatous perennial from north India. It is a parent of the Rex-cultured begonias. It has pink flowers but is mainly grown almost exclusively for their foliage. Bright, indirect light year-round. Because they are not aggressive bloomers, they can tolerate less light than other begonias and will thrive under fluorescent lights.... Begonias like even water, but hate being overwatered, and they thrive on humidity, but don't like direct misting, which encourages powdery mildew. Average to warm temperature. They cannot tolerate freezing, and some types of Rex begonias go into a dormant period during the fall. The soil need to be airy, light, fast-draining. Use liquid fertilizer weekly at quarter strength or biweekly at half strength. They enjoy the same humid, gentle environment of understory ferns. Be especially careful of directly spraying the leaves, as standing water will encourage powdery mildew or root rotting, which is a disaster on a plant meant to be viewed. You should remove dead flowers and leaves.
