17.01.2022 Headaches An estimated 15% of Australians are taking pain medication for a Headache at any given time. Headaches can come out of nowhere from a variety of causes but one thing is for sure, when they strike, they can instantly ruin your day! Common types of Headaches... Tension Headache: These are typically the most common form of headache, giving a feeling of tenderness, tightness or stiffness in the muscles of the back, neck, shoulders and/or jaw. Pain can be felt bilaterally (both sides of the head) and often at the temples, potentially lasting between 30 mins to a week. Cluster Headaches: Pain characterised by several intense throbbing headaches typically located on one side of the head, involving the eye, temple, neck and face. These approximately last an hour and are recurrent. Eyestrain Headaches: These can occur due to over use of your eyes, inadequate lighting or visual impairment. Pain is generally felt in the Frontal (front of the brain) or Supraorbital (the area directly above the eye sockets) and becomes worse after prolonged or intense use of the eyes. Hormonal Headaches: Occur in females during menstruation due to a decline of both oestrogen and progesterone. Sinus Headaches: Caused by sinus congestion and/or infection. Presents as a deep, dull or severe pain at the front of the head over the affected sinus. Symptoms typically worsen in cold, damp conditions with pain greater in the morning and decreasing throughout the day. The theme for this years’ National Stroke Week is United by Stroke, encouraging public education of the signs of Stroke by becoming familiar with F.A.S.T. (Face. Arms. Speech. Time.), in order to identify if someone is having a Stroke. What is a Stroke?... In order to function, our brain requires blood to provide oxygen and nutrients via arteries. When the supply of blood is prevented due to a blocked or burst artery it is referred to as a Stroke. This lack of oxygen and nutrients result in the death of brain cells. There are two types of Strokes; Ischaemic Stroke: An artery in the brain gets blocked by a clot. Haemorrhagic Stroke: A blood vessel in the brain breaks and begins to bleed. Knowing the signs of Stroke could one day be extremely important in assisting a friend or loved one in getting the urgent medical attention they require.
