23.01.2022 A setting without a stone, isn't too fab... but boy oh boy, does it make the piece whole. So much time and effort goes into the making of a piece, and the stone takes all the credit! Not today! Some stones require much more from their settings than others. Diamonds require far less demand from their settings, while other stones require heaps more room, light, and metal to shine at their very best. This stone, for this ring, was no exception to the rule. ... She is deep, light in colour, but fabulous. Therefore, the ring I made needed to have a few things. It needed to be as low as possible, which was still fairly high, big windows to let the light in and plenty of metal for the setter to be able to do his thing! 19.01.2022 This is the before shot of a make completed a number of weeks ago now. Here you can see the worn edges and the lack of stability in the structure. This is a problem I often see in heirloom jewellery. Jewellery when made well can be worn everyday, however gold is still malleable, which means it still wears away over time. Imagine a slowly dripping tap. Over time it will cause a small bit of damage to the concrete below. Its not immediate and its only small. But o...ver a life time some tender love and care is needed and this is now where this piece is in its life story. My goal for this piece is to recreate how it would have looked on the shelf before it was ever worn. 18.01.2022 Sometimes it’s not about the price or the timeframe. In this case it was about a memory. I was very lucky to have my signature dragonfly ring chosen by a beautiful person, all the way over in The United States. Her boyfriends brother unfortunately has passed recently and this ring is a symbol for her memory of him. She wanted something to look at everyday and think fondly of him. With the current global crisis we were unsure of how long shipping would ta...ke. It didn’t matter in this case, the sentiment was more important. I felt I needed to do something special. Sometimes a bit of extra kindness can really make someone’s day. So with some added love and a handwritten card, the dragonfly ring was on its way. 15.01.2022 This post mainly focuses on the window of the setting. It is such a large setting and the stone has a low refractive index. Which means we need as much light as possible to get in there, really enhance the stone as much as we can.
