20.01.2022 The Lagoon Nebula (M8) again in RGB with H alpha. This is an emission, HII region approximately 4,100 light years away.

20.01.2022 The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) taken in RGB plus H alpha in place of luminance. This is a planetary nebula a mere 650 light years away. It is caused by the white dwarf at its centre 'blowing off' spherical shells of Hydrogen that will eventually dissipate leaving only the white dwarf remaining. This is the fate in store for the Sun after it goes through its Red Giant phase. This nebula is commonly known as 'The eye of God' or in pop culture as 'The eye of Sauron'. The apparent rings are an optical illusion caused by us viewing the 'shell' tangentially on the edges, hence looking 'thicker' than in the centre.

18.01.2022 Another view of the Eagle nebula, this time in real colour using RGB plus H alpha.

14.01.2022 The Trifid Nebula (M20) using RGB and H alpha in place of luminance. This nebula is approximately 4,100 light years away and is an emission nebula and HII region (the Red bit).

12.01.2022 It's been a while but here is my first attempt at processing the Horsehead Nebula (B33)

11.01.2022 The Eagle Nebula (M16) captured using narrowband filters and processed with Red replaced by ionised Sulfur (SII), Green replaced with ionised Hydrogen (Ha) and Blue replaced with ionised Oxygen (OIII). This is known as the Hubble Palette. There is a famous image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the central region of this image, known as the 'Pillars of Creation' as it is an area of active star formation.
