24.01.2022 Interesting research results. Should writing in all its aspects, practical and creative, be taught as a separate subject in Stages 4 and 5?

15.01.2022 Narratives are anchored in the specific. They involve characters moving through space and time. Our approach gives kids a creative toolkit so they can own and develop their own creative writing. This makes it possible to achieve student centred learning. 14.01.2022 "Readers and writers practice empathy almost unconsciously. Active empathy, that engaged connect lacking in sociopaths, is a prerequisite for writing language that works."

14.01.2022 We see this all the time. Kids being taught to score points rather than create meaning. One of our bugbears is teachers telling kids not to use said in narrative writing. In fact there's a very good reason why you should. Said is invisible and lets the dialogue stand on its own. Adding too many adverbs is another to way to make something sound fancy and clunky at the same time.

13.01.2022 Another excellent piece of reporting in this series by Jordan Baker

10.01.2022 Here's the first of the four Making Worlds out of Words Creative Writing Challenges we did for Newcastle Libraries with the help of the excellent Carnivore Films. This one's about a town in drought getting some rain with a difference. It's a great exercise for teachers to use with Stage 2, 3 or 4 students, or for anyone to do at home.

06.01.2022 We had heaps of fun hanging out in the (very quiet) Newcastle Library shooting videos designed to excite kids to write. Thanks to the Newcastle Library and Carnivore Films. The videos should be available soon.
