25.01.2022 Stunning :) We have been seeing Baudins and Forest Red Tails regularly for about the last month in Mira Mar. Who have you been seeing? Have you noticed a difference this year compared to previous years?... For example- We had never seen Red tails here (in the last 3 years). I am wondering if clearing or last years fires have had much of an impact on their food sources. Please share your observations/ insights <3 See more

21.01.2022 These goodies arrived in the mail today from the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre shop :) 2021 Calendar, Some stickers for the car to help get people thinking and 2 pins (from BirdLife Western Australia) for me to wear (as often as possible!) to help promote these endangered beauties via conversation starters. I have also sent a new Calendar and inscribed gift card directly to my parents in Victoria.....every dollar to these feathered ones helps <3... For purchases go here: https://blackcockatoorecovery.com/shop/

18.01.2022 I have never seen a Gang Gang in the wild- a fascinating display and sound :)

16.01.2022 Some local red tail shenanigans ;) Great photo thanks Shaun

16.01.2022 The wonderful Hakea Laurina A medium size bush maximum (in meters 5W x 6H) Which Black Cockatoos and many other birds love (fairy wrens and other small birds enjoy them as they are a dense bush that is protective).... Plant one today ;) ideally not near busy roads (as Cockatoos take a while to get their height up when flying). <3 https://www.anbg.gov.au/gnp/gnp2/hakea-laurina.html

14.01.2022 Beautiful :) <3

12.01.2022 Who is a pretty boy? Leucistic (partial reduction of color in a bird's plumage) forest red tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii naso) male feeding a j...uvenile. The young adult male has 1 pale yellow feather on the right wing and 2 pale yellow feathers on the left wing making for a very interesting appearance in flight! The juvenile enjoyed 3 good feeds as the parent regurgitated nearby marri tree gumnut seeds. See more

11.01.2022 It wasn't that long ago that they thought the Baudin and Carnaby (Black and white cockatoos) were the same bird.... Now here is another subspecies just discovered <3

09.01.2022 There are some beautiful cockatoo pictures here <3

08.01.2022 This is wonderful news :).

05.01.2022 Just a reminder foe those of you who want to help <3 You can use the app or a form that you fill out online (my preference). How does ot help? From my lay understanding: It may indicate changes in the spread of species, population numbers, variety present (increase/decrease etc ....which could show:... changes in available habitat, competition between species, impact of predators (outside cats), breeding habits etc So please help, all information is good :)

05.01.2022 Some Baudin's in the trees across the road recently....so sweet :). If you have the room and want to feed Redtails and Baudin's about the best tree you can plant is a Marri (Corymbia calophylla ) The grow 40-50 m tall (rarely 60) and they have the wonderful conker nuts that the birds love (including other species like red capped parrots).... You have to be a bit careful with them as there a number of diseases (see doc in comments) that appear to be affecting them in large numbers which is very sad. The most important thing is to leave them as undisturbed as possible. Do not use pesticides near them and if you have to remove a limb make sure your equipment is sterilized between cuts. They are such a special tree with their snake like, wonky limbs (I had never seen anything like them before coming to the South West). We are in the process of determining a list of plants that can be good for cockatoos for planting, as because the Marri's are effected by the canker and other diseases (in the bush that the Cockatoos frequent across the road), they may need more food sources in the future. One plant that you can choose which most anyone can fit in their garden :) is the humble and very pretty Hakea Laurina (pincushion hakea). I have also been advised by Bird Life WA's Cockatoo expert, that ALL of the species enjoy it's nuts, win, win (other native birds also enjoy them :) ). They are 5m wide by 5-6m tall.
