22.01.2022 The Merry Mutton Buster was all about making our 'littlest locals' the stars of the show.... Over 30 kids lined up for the Merry Mutton Buster to have a crack a...t taking home a Bob Berg Buckles with Kelly Condon!!! It was 4 year old Illuka Kangan that had the winning grip on 'Shaun the Sheep' to take home the win and be crowned the 2020 Merry Mutton Buster Champion with a score of 19 points!!!! Illuka managed to stay aboard the McDonald bred sheep, even when the sheep run a hard left corner, Illuka stayed on top as the sheep turned on a dime, earning him the extra point needed to take him to the top of the score board..... Followed closely was 6 year old Penny Smith from 'Champion' Blackall who finished in second place on 18 points on a Sheep named 'Jackie Ram' to receive a buckle for 'Runner Up Champion'. Penny, who usually rides horses (not sheep) when helping her dad muster on their property, certainly proved her exceptional balance, riding her sheep all the way to the fence, almost dismounting perfectly onto her feet.... Harper Russell (7years old) travelled back to Blackall from Toowoomba for school holidays to prove well and truly he is still a 'boy from the bush', showing the crowd just how easy it was to ride his fast running sheep 'Ewe Heifner' , winning a buckle for 'Best Technique'. Judges were very impressed with a combination of his grip, balance and determination which certainly got him the win for this category. Thank you again to all the little kids that made this event special, along with the McDonald Family, judges, volunteers & of course The CrackUp Sisters who were the coolest Rodeo Clowns ever!!!! #betterinblackall

09.01.2022 In collaboration with a local song writer, Josh Arnold and the Small Town Culture team have created a RIPPER of a song! 'Better in Blackall' is a song all about... our amazing region so it is only fitting that it is recorded and filmed out here too! Josh and his team will be coming to Blackall October 6-10, 2020, to work with locals on the new hit which will be officially released at the 2021 Better in Blackall Festival. Want to be part of the show stopper? Here's how: As a vocalist (for the grown-ups), be at the Living Arts Centre at 5pm on October 6th for rehearsal and further details. As a vocalist (for the kids), just have your vocal cords ready! Josh will be holding workshops at both schools on October 7th-8th and including each student as much or as little as they would like! As part of the film clip, have yourself down at the clock tower in Shamrock Street from 5pm, Friday October 9th! We'll then be ending the afternoon with a sausage sizzle in the main street, with an array of the Barcoo Butchery's best flavours! #betterinblackall
