07.01.2022 Rockingham Race Regatta 2018 done and dusted! The ever competitive and entertaining racing was held over the weekend just gone. A Saturday morning start off Leighton Beach proved to be a picturesque setting with breeze filling in from the south at 12-15 knots. After an average start, Black Betty managed to claw back some places and round the bottom mark in 2nd place behind Craig Carter's "Indian", providing spectators at Barchetta in Cottesloe with an exciting spectacle. Fro...m there it was a predominantly upwind race with breeze topping out at 18 knots. Our fellow GP42 "Dirty Deeds" was hot on our tail the entire race and made sure we put every effort in to stay in front on IRC. After Indian had an unfortunate yet all too familiar mishap involving the channel marker, Black Betty crossed the line in Rockingham in first place. Congratulations to "Argo" for winning on IRC by a mere 43 seconds! After a few quiet drinks, the boys went to rest in preparation for a windy Sunday forecast. Sunday morning's windward leeward race started with a fresh 18 knot sou'wester and made the 3 lap race a quick one at 33 minutes. We comfortably crossed the line in 1st and managed to secure 1st on IRC by 1:51 in front of Ian Clyne's "Joss". A quick break prior to the start of the passage race to Freo allowed for a headsail change to cope with the increasing sea breeze. The wind was consistently strengthening and we were looking forward to getting the annoying upwinds and cracked sheets reaching out of the way for the blast down hill. After rounding the first Gage Roads channel mark and bearing north, we hoisted the A4 and held on tight. Our skipper Nick Deussen did not let go of the wheel and manhandled the black go-kart to keep us from bowling out. Gusts continued to funnel down and kept Betty skimming along (or through) the waves at speeds around 18 - 20 knots. Our grinders took turns on the pumps to keep the kite working, surely feeling fresh and fit after a very quiet night. The wind angle barely allowed us to make the exit of the channel and a final clean gybe sent us towards the finish at South Mole. We crossed the line 6 minutes in front of our direct competition, Dirty Deeds. The hard work paid off and we were awarded 1st on IRC and YAH handicap. We would like to thank Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and the Cruising Yacht Club of WA and their volunteers for putting on a fantastic weekend of racing in the beautiful Cockburn Sound. A big thanks and congrats to all the owners and crew of the other boats in the fleet, these events need as many boats as possible for them to continue on into the future.
